About 1750 he moved to near Charlotte, NC and about 5 years later he moved to near York, SC. He lived there about 65 years. William and 3 of his sons fought in the Revolutionary War. They were instrumental in winning the "Battle of Kings Mountain", which was near their home.

In 1765 William secured from King George the Third a grant for a tract of land situated about three miles south of King's Mountain, in York Co., SC.
