He claimed the east half of the northeast quarter of section 14. He sold this claim in February, 1854 and went to Michigan and after a few years, returned to this township and located at Redmon, where he died in 1869.

Lands, Tama County, 1853-1856, Vol. 1: In Book 5, p. 129 of Land Deeds, there is a record of Henkerson Ashby selling land to Levi Marsh, date of the instrument being July 28, 1855. Description: Commencing at the NW corner of NE-SE Sec. 26, Twp. 83 N. 13 W. (York) - running E 40 r S 24 r and W 40 r and N 24 r to place of beginning. The deed states that Hankerson and his wife, Susanna, sold this 6 acres for $15.

According to Tama County History, Hankerson's second wife, and mother of Catherine, was Mary Ann Wilder. Catherine's obit states she had a half-brother named David Dale. Census and marriage records prove that Catherine was born to Mary Ann Wilder in 1848 and Hankerson married Susanna in 1850. Therefore, it was with Susanna that the move was made to Iowa in 1852 with the Shugarts. Parents: Bladen ASHBY and Catherine VAN METER.

Joseph was married to Eleanor Ashby, Hankerson's sister. Susannah was 45 years of age in the 1850 census. "The Ashby Book" states Susannah and Hankerson were married in the presence of Joseph pemberton and Joel Osborn, ceremony by William Allen, Justice of the Peace.

Hankenson ASHBY served as a Private in Captain James COOK's Company, Coloniel Daniel MORGAN's Rifle Regiment, Continental Troops. His name is on the payroll of that organization from July 1777 to December 1778. Later in Illinois papaers he appears on Peter ASTERGER's Company of Kentucky. The company commanded by General George Rogers CLARK commencing 18 Aug 1780 and ending 21 Aug 1780, last day included name of Hankenson ASHBY, having served three years and entitled to the sum of 20608 pounds after the name Hankerson ASHBY is written the word "dead" but no date. [This information copied by Rebecca JOHNSTON at Richmond, VA.]

"Soldiers & Sailors in the American Revolution," Institute of American Genealogy, 1929, Chicago, Ser. V, No. 25 lists Hankerson ASHBY in Captain John DEAN's Company, Westmoreland County, PA. Rangers on p. 494 as Ensign. Another entry lists him as a Volunteer in Captain Andrew LYNN's Company from Westmoreland County.

Mrs. Henry CHANEY of St. Marys, KS 66536 states that Hankerson ASHBY was b 2 June 1758 Overwharton Parish, Va., and that he married in 1787 in Hardin Co., KY. This informationw as given to Mrs. Helen E. BLAIS, PO Box 222, North Powder, OR 97867 who forwarded it to compiler who has nothing further on this.

The name of HANKERSON (HANKENSON) appears in early New Jersey records (1731 Monmouth). Unverified data claims taht Thomas(2) ASHBY and Mary Ann McCULLOUGH were thought to have moved to Maryland, but inquiries by the compiler have not confirmed this.

"Ashbys, Reids., p. 14: "Hankerson ASHBY's name appears in two references in Eckenrod's "Revolutionary Soldiers," the one below "I.P.D. 58" and another "Pitts LL," which is the payroll of Capt. Hancock LEE, in which Hankerson ASHBY, private, served 87 days and records his payment (From Archives, Dept., Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA) No date is given.

Hankerson ASHBY has a record of service under General George Rogers CLARK. His name apepars on the payroll of Capt. Peter ASTURGUS' Company of Kentucky County, Virginia Militia, from July 18, 1780 to Aug 21, 17890, and the notation "dead" afte rhis name. This is found in a manuscript document known as "Illinois Papers, Book D, p. 58, being "in actual service on expedition against SHawneetown and ending Aug. 21, 1780.

Bladen and Hankerson are said to have enlisted together at Fort Pitt.

He lived in Sterling most of his adult life, where he was a grocery and ranch supply salesman. He married Carol Baird on May 28, 1928, in Sterling. She died Jan. 22, 1950. He married Lenna Wells on July 9, 1951. She died May 10, 1988. Mr. Ashby was a member of the First Christian Church. Article of death in the Sioux City Journal, Monday, October 25, 1926:
HUNTER KILLED ACCIDENTALLY: Winnebago Man Died of Wound Received When Gun Is Discharged.
Loss of blood and shock caused when he accidentaly shot himself in the right arm at his home near Winnebago, Neb., resulted in death Sunday evening for James Ashby, a farmer, 65 years old.
Ashby was brought to Sioux City shortly after the accident occurred and his arm amputated at St. Joseph's Hospital in an effort to save his life. He was so weak from loss of blood, however, that he did not recover from the operation.
Ashby was preparing to go hunting with friends, and was packing his shotgun in a case when the accident occurred. The gun was discharged as he was taking it apart, and the charge entered his right arm.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Westcott's undertaking firm is in charge. Parents: William ASHBY and Eliza FARLEY.

bullet James Hankerson ASHBY was born on 19 Mar 1840 in Kosciusko Co., IN. (129)(130) He died on 4 Oct 1917 in Cedar Co., Magnet, NE. (National Archives Veterans Records for James Ashby). James was born Caseasco [Kosciusko County], Ind. He was 22 years old and listed occupation as farmer. He enlisted August 1, 1862, at Vinton, Iowa for a period of three years. Described as black eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5 ft. 8 in. tall. When mustered in October 10, 1862. Muster-in date Aug. 1, 1862. He was paid a $25 bounty and $2 premium. Muster-in roll for Company D, 28 Regiment Iowa Infantry, dated Iowa City, Iowa, October 10, 1862. "Was engaged in battle of Port Gibson at Champion Hill was sick. Got plenty of that ingredient called "grit." Company Muster Rolls state he was wounded in the left arm at Cedar Creek, Va., October 19, 1864 and sent to general hospital in Davenport, Iowa. He was returned to duty April 15, 1865. In April 1865, transportation stop for $35.68 from York, Pa., to Iowa and return.

Randolph Times newspaper, 11 Oct 1917, p. 5:

"J. H. Ashby, aged 76, one of Magnet's oldest citizens, was buried there last Sunday. "Dad" Ashby, as he was known to Magnet citizens, was one of the pioneers of the town and owned several buildings there. He was quite a character and known over Cedar county to a considerable extent. Some years ago while driving his auto he had a wreck in which his wife lost her life and he was injured. He again married later."
