"Shortly after Jacob and Margaret Brown were married, there was a migration of German settlers to central Pennsylvania. John Hoobler, his sons and their families, the Browns and others of our ancestral lines, including the Reeds and Dices, left the Tulpehocken to seek new land. By 1795, the Browns and Hooblers were in Toboyne Twp., Cumberland County (now Perry County), Pennsylvania.

Ten children were born to Jacob and Margaret, then tragedy struck. Jacob died suddenly leaving no will. The last child, Michael, was born the year Jacob died (1814). Jacob had been a farmer; in 1820 his widow was assessed for 125 acres of land. Court records, including the inventory of the estate, the letters of administration to widow "Rebecca" Margaret Hoobler and her brother, Peter Brown, document the division of the estate. The estate was settled in 1822 and at that time Margaret and the Browns joined the movement ot Ohio. Adam and Michael, with their families, moved to Ohio prior to Jacob's death. It is said that their father, John, died there. Parents: John HOOBLER and Anna Margareth ?.

Obituary of Jemima states she was born to John and Rebecca Hoobler, January 10, 1824 in Fulton County, Ohio. Jemima died at the age of 97 at her daughter's (Mrs. George Powell) home. The funeral was held at the U.B. church at Missal, with interment in Phillips cemetery.

Jean Powell Keesee (granddaughter of Jacob and Jemima, 89 years old [02/21/97]) said Jemima was short and weighed less than 100 pounds all her life. Jean's granddaughter (Linda Keesee McCabe) is now in possession of Jemima's crutch. "Jean remembers her grandmother very well because she lived with her until Jemima died. Jean loved her very much. She remembers Jemima asking Jean to go outside to the well to fetch a fresh drink of water, and then rewarding her with a peppermint candy." She also knew her two aunts, Sarah R., or "Aunt Becky," and Mary C., or "Aunt Molly."

Letter from Donna Berge for Jean Powell Keesee, May 23, 1997: "Jean also remembers a story that was told about her Grandma Jemima. It is said that she had visitors for dinner one day. After preparing a huge meal and seating the gorup, she said to begin eating, then excused herself to her bedroom right next to the dining room. She was absent for quite a while, and finally someone decided to check on her. When the person entered the room, Jemima had had a baby and was tying the umbilical cord!" bullet John HOOBLER was born on 2 Aug 1801 in Perry Co., PA. (613)(614) (615) He died on 16 Apr 1886 in Newtown Twp., Livingston Co., IL. (616) Rev. John Hoobler was born in Perry County, PA, on the 2nd of August, 1801. He removed to Montgomery County, OH, in 1823; thence to Fountain County, Indiana, in 1832, and to Vemillion County, Indiana, where he represented the county, in 1836 and 1837, also in 1841 and 1842. He removed to Vermilion County, Illinois, in 1847, and settled in Ross township, where he was the first elected supervisor. He then went to Livinston County, Illinois, in 1851, where he was presiding elder for six years. From there he went to Perrysville, Indiana, in 1872, and there he acted as a local preacher. He returned to Vermilion County in 1874. He was twice married; first, to Miss Rebecca Fetterhoff, in 1821--they had eleven children. After Rebecca's death, 6 Aug 1871, John Hoobler married Lydia A. Hulick, a native of Pennsylvania.

In 1851 Mr. Hoobler purchased eighty acres of land in Newtown Township, and soon afterward entered 1,400 acres which was mostly devoted to pasture. He was foremost in all the enterprises calculated to encourage the moral and educational welfare of the people, and while for over fifty years he was a laborer in the Master's vineyard, he also in the meantime built up a good homestead and superintended the cultivation of a large tract of land. In early life he had identified himself with the Democratic party, but later adopted Republican principles, and was a strong Prohibitionist. During the agitation of the Fugitive Slave Law he was most radically on the side of the oppressed, and lifted up his voice at every opportunity in behalf of those in bondage. He had in his possession a picture of Owen Lovejoy, which that gentleman gave him in 1860, and which he prized for its associations beyond price, and which he wanted to hand down to his children as a reminder of one of the brave men of his day and generation. He greatly prospered in worldly affairs, as well as in the ministry, and made good use of his opportunities.

Rev. John and Rebecca Hoobler's home was located on the northeast corner of Section 23, Newtown Township, Livingston County, Illinois. This home was destroyed by fire. Another was built in 1857, and this home was later the residence of his son, Frederick Hoobler, and family.

John and Rebecca are buried side-by-side in New Michigan Cemetery, Newtown, Illinois.
