John Hendley Barnhart letter of March 29, 1900 states: "Your uncle John Barnhart wrote me before his death that his father (John) was born in Germany and his grandfather (Anthony Barnhart, Sr.) never came to America." This was John M. Barnhart stating his father, John, was born in Germany, which is a discrepancy to the above notation.

David L. BARNHART was born on 2 Jan 1878 in Chariton Co., Sumner, MO. He died on 13 Mar 1964 in Weld Co., Greeley, CO. From March 13, 1964 obituary:

"David Barnhart Dies Friday at Nursing Home

David L. Barnhart, 86, of the Kenton Nursing Home, a resident of Greeley for the past 27 years, died Friday morning at the nursing home. He was born January 2, 1878, at Sumner, Mo., where he was reared and later moved to Sterling where he worked for Great Western Sugar Co. He came to Greeley in 1937 and had lived here since. Barnhart married Alva (sic) Zeigler February 8, 1905, at Blackstone, Illinois, and she survives. Other survivors include four children, Miss Vernald Barnhart of Greeley, Mrs. Dorothy Ashby of Longmont, Miss (sic) Fay Barnhart of Long Beach, Calif., and Ralph Barnhart of Cold Water, Kansas; a sister, Mrs. Leota Frakes of Laclede, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. from Adamson Memorial Chapel with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens."

Memories of David Barnhart are fond ones of a man who was "old" and walked very carefully with the use of canes. Walter Ashby related a story about how one afternoon of card playing David got up to go to his bedroom when he looked down and the cuffs of his pants were in tatters. Evidently, due to the poor feeling in his legs, he had no idea that the new puppy had a chewing good time.
The last years of David's life were spent in a nursing home in Greeley, CO. He had a habit of sleeping with the sheet pulled over his head. The nurses said that "Barney" had to have a bed behind the door because visitors were sure to think he was a corpse awaiting burial.

Barnhart, Sterling-Advocate, March ? 1962: "Funeral services for Earl D. Barnhart, 62, of 111 Magnolia Lane, who died Thursday at his home, will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, from the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Darrell Davis officiating. Mr. Barnhart was born Sept. 17, 1899, in Sumner, Mo., the son of Phineas and Belle Arthur Barnhart. He came to this region with his parents in 1910, and engaged in railroad work and ranching before retiring. he married Verlene Wilson, Feb. 6, 1932, in Sidney, Neb. Mr. Barnhart was a member of the Presbyterian Church, World War I veteran, American Legion and V.F.W., and was recently elected commander of the newly organized Sterling Barracks 2823 for World War I veterans. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Verlene F. Barnhart of Sterling; three daughters, Sally Covert and Susan Seckler, both of Sterling, and Nancy Schramm of Williston, N.D.; a son, Jim Barnhart, now with the U.S. Army in Germany; his mother, Mrs. Belle Barnhart of Sterling; a brother, Fern Barnhart of Brighton and four grandchildren.
