Death Summons George Powell in Farm Home

Funeral services were held in Missal, U. B. Church on Tuesday afternoon.

George Ellsworth Powell, aged 70, son of the late Rev. A. B. Powell and Mary C. Haffner Powell, died at his hom in Newtown township, near Missol, at 8 o'clock Saturday evening, following a long illness, the immediate cause of his passing being attributed to pneumonia, with which he was stricken a week ago.

Mr. powell was born in Livingston county, June 8, 1869, and grew to manhood in that community. His marriage with Miss Isabelle M. Kuns occurred in pontiac, September 3, 1891.

They took up their residence on a farm near Missal, and it was there they became the parents of six children, all of whom are left, with the mother, as follows: Mrs. W. G. (Fern) Brandes, registered nurse, Pontiac; Wilbur E. Powell, Blackstone; Mary J. Powell, copy reader, Chicago; Mrs. Elvin (Jessie) Riss, Kernan; Jacob A. Powell, Streator; and Mrs. W. O. (Jean) Keessee, Missal. A granddaughter, Mary Jean Powell, has been making her home with her grandparents. There are elven grandchildren and one great grandchild, Edward Grundler, of Pontiac. (Jean Powell Keesee corrected the above via letter from Donna Berge on 23 Apr 1997: "George Powell took up farming near Blackstone on Jacob Kuns' farm, not at Missal. All the Powell children were born on Jacob's farmstead. The Powell's didn't move to Missal until 1917.")

Mr. Powell was the last of a large family, all of whom were well known in Livingston county and other places where they took up their respective residences. They included Dr. W. O. Powell, Mackinaw, Ill.,; Charles Powell, Fayette, Mo.; Mrs. G. Wenzelman of Galesburg, Ill.; Jesse R. Powell, of Chicago and St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mr. Powell held various public offices in his community, among them that of road commissioner and assessor, the latter of which he held for 15 years, and was an incumbent at the time of his passing. He was a faithful member of the Missal U. B. church, in which he held office throughout the passing years. He was a very prominent farmer in the community.

Funeral services were held from the home at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, and from the U. B. church at 2:30 o'clock, with burial in the family lot in Phillips' cemetery, northwest of Manville. Parents: Rev. A. B. POWELL Rev. and Mary C. HAFFNER.

He was married to Mahala Isabel KUNS on 3 Sep 1892 in Pontiac, Livingston Co., IL. Children were: Fern Lucille POWELL, Wilbur Earl POWELL, Mary Jemima POWELL, Jessie Irene POWELL, Jacob Alexander POWELL, Jean Mae POWELL.
