SUMNER - Jay Barnhart, a native of Sumner, has been named winner of the first Harding L. Lawrence Distinguished Service Award of Braniff International Airways. The award, an engraved silver punch bowl, was presented by Lawrence, who is president of the airlines, to Barnhart Saturday night at a banquet held in a Dallas, Tex., hotel. Barnhart, 34, is military contract manager for Braniff International at Saigon, South Vietnam. He is in charge of ground operations for Braniff's flights in and out of Vietnam for the military airlift command. "He has posted an outstanding performance record in spite of the inherent adverse conditions and ever-present dangers," Lawrence said in tribute to the ex-Chariton Countian. Mr. Barnhart was born on Aug. 21, 1940 in Sterling. He was a graduate of Sterling High School and the University of Colorado. He served three years in the U.S. Army. He was the former owner of Cheerios Lounge in Denver and became a food and beverage consultant. He was a member of the VFW 4171 in Golden. He is survived by his mother, Verlene of Denver; wife Dixie of Aurora; daughters Heather Bishop of Syracuse, N.Y., and Nicole Barnhart of Durango; sister, Sally Lawrence and Nancy Shram of Denver and Susan Seckler of Augusta, Maine." Local Man Dies at 74

John Lew Barnhart, 74, 1907 Avenue L, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Fe hospital, Topeka Kan. He had been in failing health for two years and hospitalized since last June 19.

Born Oct. 14, 1888, at Sumner, Mo., he had lived in Fort Madison since 1931. He was a retired Santa Fe railroad conductor. On Dec. 31, 1929 at Savannah, Mo., he married Ethel L. Rankin, who survives.

Mr. Barnhart was a member of the First Methodist church, the Order of Railroad Conductors and Brakemen, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a past president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a step-son, Carlyle Rankin, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, David L. Barnhart, Greeley, Colo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Ira Frankes, Forker, Mo., and Mrs. A. Stobaugh, Chillicothe, Mo. One step grandson and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The body is at the Barr Memorial Chapel where final rites will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Dr. Claude W. Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, Sumner, Mo. The family will meet friends at the Barr chapel between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. today. The casket will be closed for the funeral rites. Parents: Joseph BARNHART and Kissiah SMITH.

Joseph BARNHART was born on 23 May 1842 in Streator, LaSalle Co., IL.⁽²¹¹⁾⁽¹⁹⁴⁾⁽¹⁹⁵⁾ He died on 30 Oct 1933 in Sumner, Chariton Co., MO.⁽²¹²⁾ (Rememberances of Jean Brady Jesaitis, granddaughter, July 1997) Joseph loved to read. His main interest was in the strategy of war, and he was especially intrigued about Custer's battle at the Little Big Horn. He was a silversmith, maker of violins, builder, farmer, etc. He built several homes around Sumner, Missouri, including the one for his daughter, Tina. He was very frightened of storms. He mostly lived on his pension from the Civil War. He spent his last years in blindness due to reading in bright sunlight before his
eyes were healed from cataract surgery. He was remembered with fondness.

The Certificate of Death, Chariton County, MO, for Joseph notes that he was born in Streator, IL; informant was his daughter, Leota (Brady) Barnhart. The 1920 Census, Sterling, CO, Joseph's son, Phineas, listed Pennsylvania as father's place of birth. Parents: Jacob BARNHART and Susanah LINBIGLER.

"Phineas Taylor lived in Sumner and Brookfield, MO, until 1910 when he moved to Sterling, Colorado, where he farmed. He retired in 1945.

Address on the 1920 census appears to be 512 Beattie Street, Sterling, CO.

History of Logan County 1887-1987: "Mr. Barnhart was employed by the Burlington and the Wabash Cannonball Railroad in Sumner. In 1910 they moved to Sterling, CO, and was employed by the Great Western Sugar Company. In 1912, they moved to the Pawnee area west of Sterling and homesteaded for several years. He retired from ranching in 1945. . . The Barnharts celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1948. While attending the 50th anniversary festivities at the Brown Palace Hotel, they were awarded 1st prize in the ballroom dancing contest. Numerous Indian artifacts found on the Barnhart ranch have been loaned for display to the Overland Trail Museum." Parents: Joseph BARNHART and Kissiah SMITH.

Ralph David , Jr. BARNHART was born on 28 Nov 1935 in Ellsworth, KS.⁽²²⁸⁾ He died on 23 Dec 1994 in Vancleave, MS. "1953 graduated from Coldwater High School, Coldwater, KS. Attended Kansas State Univ. from 1953-55 in Manhattan, KS. Enlisted in U.S. Navy, submarine service, in 1955. In 1958, was a crew member of first crew on U.S.S. Nautilus and was on the maiden voyage under the ice from the Pacific to the Atlantic by way of North pole. After discharge in 1962, returned to KSU and graduated with B.S. in Business Administration. 1963, worked in insurance in Denver, CO, area. Began having heart problems in 1977 and moved to Mississippi because of health. Built home at 9810 Hidden Lake Rd., Vancleave, MS. Died of heart attacked at home on 23 Dec 1994."

Article by Frances N. Butcher, Coldwater, Kansas, newspaper: "The Last Word--Our fifth grade students should be very interested in one of the new library books they have this year. In it they will find a picture of coldwater's own Ralph D. Barnhart, Jr. Ralph was the only Kansan of the crew on the submarine, the Nautilus, when it made the memorable crossing under the ice. The book, "First Under the North Pole", was written by Commander Anderson, skipper of the Nautilus, and is one of the new Reading circle books. Ralph is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph d. Barnhart, Sr., and was our next door neighbor until we moved last week. He is attending Kansas State University at Manhattan this year as a junior."
