Murphy SMITH was born on 7 Feb 1829 in IL.⁽²⁴⁴⁾⁽²⁰³⁾ He died on 8 Dec 1902 in Sumner, Chariton Co., MO.⁽¹⁴⁵⁰⁾ From the Sumner, Missouri, History Book, p. 33:

"Murphy Smith and wife, Charity (Simmons), were natives of Illinois. Early in their married life, they left Illinois, during the Gold Rush of 1849. At the beginning of the Civil War, they were living near Lancaster, Missouri. Mr. Smith served in the war, after which, he took his family back to Illinois for a brief time, then coming to this part of Missouri in 1866. They bought a farm near Forker from Fred Boomer. "Uncle Murph and Aunt Charity," as their friends lovingly called them, were the parents of twelve children. Those who lived to maturity were: Eliza Jane, Mary, Daniel, John D., Will, and Flora.

Arnette Epperson, Community Betterment member, was instrumental in preserving the cemetery. She was 82 in 1996 and the "local historian" of Sumner, Missouri. Stedman's inscription: "Stidman, son of Zion & Francis Smith died June 7, 1883 age 28 yr. 15 da." Parents: Zion SMITH and Frances SMITH.

History of Sumner, Missouri, page33:

"Murphy Smith had a sister, Frances, who was the wife of Zion Smith, also early settlers. Their children were: Mrs. Elizabeth Hayles, Mrs. Keziah Barnhart, Mrs. Sally Lee and Henry Smith."

Zion Smith was in Capt. Gregory's Co., Mounted Riflemen, Col. Moore's Regiment, Mounted Volunteers, Illinois Militia for the Black Hawk War. The only record was his Muster-out Roll dated June 25, 1832. (Military Record, National Archives) Parents: SMITH.

In testimony where of I have hereunto set my hand and affirmed the seal of the County Commissioning Court at my office in Quincy this 27 day of Nov. 1838. Nick R. Wren, Clerk."

On the reverse:

Rachel Ellen SNYDER was born on 25 Dec 1866.⁽¹⁴⁶²⁾ She died on 11 Mar 1930 in Manville, IL. "Rachel 'Ellen' Hoobler was the daughter of Calvin and Jane Snyder. She was born Dec. 25, 1866, and died March 11, 1930, in her home in Manville, aged 63 years, 2 months, and 14 days. The services were conducted in her home by the presiding Elder George Auman, assisted by her pastor, the Rev. W. O. Chambers. Interment was in the Phillips Cemetery nearby."
