"Nine children were born to them, five of whom grew up. They were all born long before the Civil War, my father being the youngest, born Feb 2, 1852. Margaret was very fond of her older sister, Mrs. Cassit Smith. This sister had six children all dying in infancy. Margaret out of love and sympathy, put the name Smith as a middle name in the names of all her children, except that of my father, to whom she added the whole name Cassit Smith." per Edna Pearle Shields Palmer.
