He arrived in Chicago at the age of 15 with his step-father Mr. Donder and step-sister Stella and 2 step-brothers. He worked in the shipyards at 92nd Street and Calumet River. Later he worked for Mr. Siep in his bakery where he learned his trade. He studied the art of magic and taught himself to play the zither. - Comments from his granddaughter, Gloria Heinkel Novak
