His grandfather came to Virginia from England. He was one of the younger sons of a wealthy Englishman. He was educated for the ministry and sent by the English government to preach to the colonists in the Shenandoah River Valley. He was paid in hogsheads of tobacco, became wealthy, invested in slaves. As an old man, he became an abolitionist and freed all his slaves, thus impoverishing his family.
