ANOTHER VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR DIES
Joe B. Hays, Who fought on the side of the South in Civil War, died Friday at
age of 78.
One by one they are rapidly marching on! The ranks of the veterans of the war
between the states were again lessened by one when the death of Joseph B. Hays
occurred at his home in this city Friday. Mr. Hays, who served in the cause
of the Confederacy, made the third veteran of this conflict to pass away in this
community with this last month. The other two are Union veterans, Peter A. Schultz
and Thomas L. Courtney.
The couple was the parents of thirteen children, ten of whom survive the father.
They are W. B. Hays of Hannibal; Mrs. Charles ODaniel of Scotland, Texas;
P. J. Hays and Mrs. Ralph Donoho, Archer City, Texas; Mrs. Harry Yates, Harlingen,
Texas; Albert Hays, Mrs. William H. Mudd, Mrs. Frank Losson, and A. Leon Hays,
Monroe City. He was buried on 14 Jun 1928 in St. Stephens Cemetery, Indian Creek,
Monroe, MO. The funeral was held from Holy Rosary church in this city Monday
morning at 10 oclock, conducted by the Rev. E. Connolly. Interment was
in St. Stephens cemetery in Indian Creek. (Note: Article mentions 10 children
living but lists nine. Joseph Fielder Hays was omitted. He might have lived
in Laddonia, Mo. at that time or in Archer City, TX. He was a Farmer. Joseph
Basil is a brother to Sarah Ellen.
Joseph Basil Hays was born in Kentucky, December 2, 1849, and came with his parents
to Missouri when he was about five years old, the trip made by ox team The family
located near Indian Creek.
Mr. Hays was only fifteen years old when he enlisted in the Southern Army. He
joined recruits in this community for Prices forces, and together with
Thomas Yates, still living, went from here to Arkansas where they were assigned,
Yates with the calvary of General Joe Shelby, and Hays with the infantry of General
Price. Mr. Hays served through the rest of the war and was at Vicksburg when
the war closed.
After having gone through the shock and terror of battle through the several
months of his service, Mr. Hays mine near to losing his life by drowning after
the conflict had ended He was on board as ship which was transporting Confederate
soldiers from Vicksburg to Baton Rouge, from which point they were to take another
boat St. Louis and home. When a few miles below Vicksurg this boat was sunk and
hundreds of lives were lost Mr. Hays succeeded in scrambling to shore together
with the late James McLeod of this community.
On January 16, 1867. he was married to Miss. Magdalen Leake at St. Stephens
church at Indian Creek. They lived on a farm in the community until 1880 when
they located in Monroe City were Mr. Hays was engaged in a livery business with
T. J. Yates until the following year when they moved to a farm near Clapper where
they lived for a time, but again returned to Monroe City. to Mr. & Mrs. Hays
celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1917 and she lived until five
years later.
