SIXTH GENERATION
48. * Albert Benjamin CONE
(82)
(132)(76)
(133) was born on 19 May 1798 in Middletown, Middlesex, CT. He died
in 1869 in Athens, Athens, OH. He was raised in New York state. Preacher for
the United Brethren Church, also a circuit rider in Ohio. He was listed as a
farmer & carpenter. The 1903 history stated "Republican in politics
and a farmer by occupation.
Albert B. Cone, was a carpenter, farmer and minister, having spent the last years
of his life in preaching the gospel in Athens county, Ohio. He was connected
with the United Brethren church and was a circuit rider in Ohio. He lived to
the age of eighty-six years, and at his death the community mourned the loss
of one of its truest and noblest citizens. Mr. & Mrs. Cone became the parents
of ten children, five daughters and five sons, and nine of the number grew to
manhood and womanhood.
Albert's grandson, Elmer Colfax Cone thought his grandfather was a Lutheran minister
and it possible the he was but we have never been able to find evidence to prove
that this was so. Also the 1903 history lists only two children, as there is
a difference of 22 years between the children, it was to be expected that there
were other children not known or mentioned when the 1903 history was published.
In 1937 Elmer Colfax Cone wrote to Elwood a letter, which he still has, giving
him as much information as he could remember about his father's family. The
letter states: "Father was born I 1837 in Ohio and had three brothers and
four sisters. The only ones I ever knew or seen (sic) was two brothers. William,
fathers oldest brother and his youngest brother Frank were through on a visit
about 55 years ago (1882). Albert, father's youngest brother lived not far from
Kansas City and raised a family there of several children. He was a carpenter
and a cabinet maker. His two oldest boys John and Henry worked in the Missouri
Pacific RR car shops as car finishers. The rest of the family I know little
about. Uncle Albert visited with us a few times alone." He also wrote
"Fathers sister, Aunt Lois was several years older and married a Fred Shepply
and there was another sister married to a man named Oberholtzer, they had a son
named Will."
It would seem then that the family of Albert B. Cone and Sarah McCune consisted
of at least eight rather then two shown in the 1903 history. This information
and that from a Biographical Record of Jasper County about Thomas L. Cone, led
us to the name and some information on ten children. He was married to * Sarah
"Sally" MCCUNE on 10 Feb 1820 in Athens County, OH.
