FOURTH GENERATION

13. Daniel MCKISSICK (36) (15) was born on 23 Nov 1818 in Howard County, MO. He was a Farmer in 1850 in Fremont County, IA.(37) He died on 26 Jun 1895 in Secret Valley, Lassen, CA. (38) He was a Silversmith. Daniel for a time engaged in operating a sawmill in the southwestern part of Iowa on a small island that to this day bears the name of McKissick Island. Daniel was a man of considerable genius and Mechanical ability, he was well qualified for the Milling Business and for all work requiring expertness with tools and machinery. In 1859 Daniel decided to sell out and move to California. So 1860 he brought his family across the plains to Long Valley, California, where his brother, Jacob had settled many years before. After a time he removed to Elsworth, Nevada and took up the Teaming Business. In the year 1870 he returned to California and settled in Secret Valley, 23 miles N.E. of Susanville, California. Daniel was the first man to take a wagon into Secret Valley and on his ranch of nine hundred acres he lived out his life on which he was laid to rest, his wife also laid to rest on the ranch.

He was married to Melissa FOWLER (daughter of Joseph FOWLER and Hannah ?) on 15 Jul 1845 in Clay County, MO. (14) The had five children: Louise, Eliza, Melissa, Katherine Jane, and Humphrey Best. Melissa FOWLER was born about 1822 in Howard County, MO. She died on 26 Dec 1896 in Secret Valley, Lassen, CA.(39) She signed a will on 8 Feb 1897 in Lassen County, CA.(40) Her Father may have been a officer in the War of 1812. Daniel MCKISSICK and Melissa FOWLER had the following children:
