After her brother Caligula became emperor, she had some power until she was discovered conspiring against him. She dominated the emperor and persuaded him to advance the interests of Nero at the expense of his own son, Britannicus. She almost certainly poisoned Claudius, thus bringing Nero to power. She quarreled with Seneca, with Claudius' secretary Narcissus, and with the other ministers. Her son, weary of her intrigues, had her murdered. bullet Agustus (Caius Augustus Octavius (Octavian) Caesar) Roman Emperor was born in 63 BC in Palatine Hill, and the street called The Ox-Heads. While he was yet an infant, the surname of Thurinus was given him, in memory of the birth-place of his family, or because, soon after he was born, his father Octavius had been successful against the fugitive slaves, in the country near Thurium. That he was surnamed Thurinus, I can affirm upon good foundation, for when a boy, I had a small bronze statue of him, with that name upon it in iron letters, nearly effaced by age, which I presented to the emperor Hadrian], by whom it is now revered amongst the other tutelary deities in his chamber. He is also often called Thurinus contemptuously, by Mark Antony in his letters; to which he makes only this reply: I am surprised that my former name should be made a subject of reproach. He afterwards assumed the name of Gaius Caesar, and then of Augustus; the former in compliance with the will of his great-uncle, and the latter upon a motion of Munatius Plancus in the senate. For when some proposed to confer upon him the name of Romulus, as being, in a manner, a second founder of the city, it was resolved that he should rather be called Augustus, a surname not only new, but of more dignity, because places devoted to religion, and those in which anything is consecrated by augury, are denominated August, either from the word auctus, signifying augmentation, or ab avium gestu, gustuve from the flight and feeding of birds; as appears from this verse of Ennius: When glorious Rome by August augury was built.
He died on 19 AUG 14 in murdered. He was a Consul in 33 BC, 31 BC, 30 BC, in 29 BC, 28 BC, 27 BC , 26 BC, 25 BC, 24 BC, 23 BC, 5 BC, 2 BC,. He was adopted By Gaius Julius Caesar. He was adopted See Note. - Tiberius(2)

Ever since the time of the Roman Emperor Augustus, people have been reading these words in the Book of Luke of the Bible. At the time of the birth of Jesus, the Roman Empire was the strongest one in the world and the Roman government had the power to tax the whole civilized European world. Far-off China was not under Roman rule, nor were the barbarians far to the North nor the kingdoms in Africa and India. The Roman world at that time was peaceful and prosperous, and much of the credit for this can be given to Augustus and his government. Augustus was the title given to the young Octavian, adopted nephew of Julius Caesar by the Roman Senate in 27 B.C. The people of Rome were so tired of the civil war that had ravaged their world for so long that they put their faith in a man who told them that he could end the strife. After having defeated his major rival Marcus Antonius at the Battle of Actium in 31 B.C., Octavian slowly and carefully introduced needed reforms. In a calculated move designed to help him consolidate power in his own hands while gaining the cooperation of the Senate, he resigned the dictatorship and announced that he was becoming a private citizen again. The senators were so pleased with the way he had put an end to the civil wars and afraid that they would resume after his retirement that they begged him to continue running the government. Augustus' uncanny political abilities and his meticulous attention to detail provided a stable government that brought peace and prosperity to the Roman Empire for the next two hundred years.

He Adoption Name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. . Augustus was born in the consulship of Marcus Tullius Cicero and Gaius Antonius [63 BCE], upon the ninth of the calends of October [the 23rd September], a little before sunrise, in the quarter of the Palatine Hill, and the street called The Ox-Heads, where now stands a chapel dedicated to him, and built a little after his death. For, as it is recorded in the proceedings of the senate, Gaius Laetorius, a young man of a patrician family, in pleading before the senators for a lighter sentence, upon his being convicted of adultery, alleged, besides his youth and quality, that he was the possessor, and as it were the guardian, of the ground which the Divine Augustus first touched upon his coming into the world; and entreated that he might find favour, for the sake of that deity, who was in a peculiar manner his; an act of the senate was passed, for the consecration of that part of his house in which Augustus was born.
His nursery is shown to this clay, in a villa belonging to the family, in the suburbs of Velitrae; being a very small place, and much like a pantry. An opinion prevails in the neighbourhood, that he was also born there. Into this place no person presumes to enter, unless upon necessity, and with great devotion, from a belief, for a long time prevalent, that such as rashly enter it are seized with great horror and consternation, which a short while since was confirmed by a remarkable incident. For when a new inhabitant of the house had, either by mere chance, or to try the truth of the report, taken up his lodging in that apartment, in the course of the night, a few hours afterwards, he was thrown out by some sudden violence, he knew not how, and was found in a state of stupefaction, with the coverlet of his bed, before the door of the chamber.

Parents: *Caius Octavius IV and *Atia Major.

He was married to *Livia Drusilla in 14. Octavian married Livia Drusilla with "indecent haste" (Earl 39) on January 17, 38 BCE. This marriage was important for the following reasons...

...it was politically astute.
By marrying a woman whose lineage (Claudian family) was so important, Octavian would attract the support of ambitious aristocrats who judged that he might be able to carry them to power (Earl 39).
...it was "perhaps the most important single event in all the long rise of Octavian to supreme power" (Earl 39) but it was also "for love and for life" (Hooper 345).

A scandal arose over the union of Octavian and the pregnant, divorced Livia. In order to lessen the effects of the scandal, Octavian manufactured an omen designed to gain support for his marriage to Livia.

It was said that as Livia rode to her country estate, she recieved a divine gift. An eagle, messenger of Jupiter, dropped a pregnant hen with a laurel sprig in her mouth into Livia's Lap.

This symbol was to indicate that "the new race of triumphatores" (generals who added to the wealth of Rome) would result from his marriage to Livia (Flory).

Livia proved to be a suitable wife, practicing "the virtues of chastity, obedience and silence" (Payne 161). But although she was silent, Livia's influence on Octavian was great. He relied on her "critical intelligence" (Payne 161), and it is said that Livia's "greatest service to the Romans lay in her devotion to Octavian and in the civilizing influence she brought to bear on him" (Payne 160).

Later, with Livia's counsel, Octavian completed his quest for control of the Roman state and won the battle of Actium. Then, in 27 BCE, Octavian recieved the honorary title "Augustus," which acknowledged his position of supreme prestige and his protection by the gods.

While exercising restraint in creating lavish tributes for himself, Augustus "carefully crafted the public display, honors and status given to his wife" (McManus)...

Public statues honored Livia.
State protection (sacrosanctity) gave her the right to sit in a special place with the vestal virgins during public performances.
She dedicated public buildings and sponsored charities.
All of her "public images and actions were closely connected with marriage, the family and traditional Roman morality" (McManus).
