Notes for Richard Campbell Hearne:
Letter written by daughter Sallie to Mary Fenton dated April 25, 1980:
"My parents lived in Independence, Kans. after they were married. Dad always said he felt like he had helped build the town in its early days. Not only building but lots of painting--he was referred to as a "master painter" in the Montgomery County (Kans that is) history book. We are all mentioned in that. After a few years of painting his health was being effected by it and they bought a farm in an area that was noted for raising melons. He raised wonderful watermelons and cantaloupes but still wanted to raise wheat so we all moved to wheat farm land (river bottom land). I was school age by then. It wasn't long after that when (Uncle) Buford came to Kansas. He was with us most of the time but would leave for a while and then come back--he was always a very withdrawn person and never seemed content wherever he was. When Aunt Etta and her husband, Uncle Willard Coleman came to Kansas he went with them and they rented a farm together. That didn't work out for very long. I guess they went back to Mo. (can't remember). He wasn't with my folks when he died and that hurt Dad so--who was in such poor health then. Aunt Fannie and Uncle Warren came from Nebraska. It was so bitter cold and a bad winter in all ways.
There was one summer that was a high lite in my life! The summer after my first year in High School--World War I days. There was a bumper wheat crop and prices were good on account of the war and Dad and Buford bought a car together (their first) - a Maxwell. I was the first to learn to drive it and whenever anyone wanted to go any place I had to take them. Gee, I had fun. When it was time for me to go back to High School in Independence, Buford learned to drive and mother did too but Dad wouldn't touch that car with a 10 ft. pole. Before long he sold his half of it it to Buford and bought himself a Model T. Ford--that had to be cranked and had clincher rim tires--and drove it everywhere. And so did I. After Dad quit farming and he and mother went to live in Liberty, he was Liberty township treasurer for a few terms and served on the Liberty town council. Some of his friends tried to get him to run for county commissioner but he wanted no part of that. I remember hearing him talk about him and his father going to Oklahoma when some Government land was opened up for claims but I never heard him mention that Buford was with them (maybe I just wasn't a good listener) and I wonder if it was the other older son that went that time and Dad was on another trip with his father.
Yes, I knew that our grandmother was an artist and we used to have one of her drawings (not as large but similar to the one you described) and whatever became of it I don't know. I feel awful that it was lost. Phyllis would like so much to have had it. She has always had a good deal of talent for that sort of thing--has attended an art class the last two years. Mary, I hope you can get something from all this that you can use--it's sort of mixed up and you can rearrange it to suit yourself. You are so brave to tackle all this. Let me know if there's any more I can do.
