MRS. CHARLOTTE SMITH DIED HERE SUNDAY; BURIED IN PUEBLO
Mrs. Charlotte Jane Smith, 83, resident of Bent County for 33 years, died Sunday at the local hospital from complications of old age.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Powell mortuary with the Rev. R.R. Platt, pastor of the Friends church, officiating,, assisted by Rev. Lyman Sallisbury, pastor of the Church of Nazarene. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Church of Nazarene and one of her sons is an evangelistic preacher for the Friends church. Burial was in Pueblo.
Mr. Smith was born at Chautauqua, Ohio, on November 27, 1866. Her husband, William Larkin Smith, died in Pueblo on July 20, 1928, and is buried in the Mountain View cemetery at Pueblo, beside whom Mrs. Smith was buried Tuesday afternoon. They lived for about 33 years in the Rule community. They were married in Clay Center, Kansas on the bride's 17th birthday.
Surviving Mrs. Smith is one daughter, Etta Burchett of Gorin, Missouri and three sons, Ernest E. Smith of Las Animas, Warren A. of Culver, Oregon, and Dwight L. of Pueblo, evangelist for the Friiends church. A daughter, Mrs. Grace Anderson, died in Fowler in April, 1919, and another daughter died in infancy. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs Ama Hill, Kansas City, Missouri, and Mrs Jack Klipsteine, Los Angeles, California, besides eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was one of the pioneers who migrated from Ohio to Kansas in a covered wagon, the later came on to Colorado in a covered wagon. She was converted to the Methodist church at an early age, then later joined the Church of the Nazarene. She was an ardent worker in the church all her life and organized a Sunday School out south for which she served as superintendent a number of years.
