Ancestors of Fanny Eggers

Generation No. 3

      4. Hendrik Bartelds Eggers18, born February 07, 1829 in Aengwirden, Friesland, The Netherlands19; died August 02, 1890 in Nijehaske, The Netherlands20. He was the son of 8. Barteld (Bareld) Pieters Eggers and 9. Femmigje (Fimmigjen) Hendriks Witmus. He married 5. Jacoba Pieters Bosma June 05, 1853 in Schoterland, Heerenveen, Friesland, The Netherlands.

      5. Jacoba Pieters Bosma21, born November 12, 1829 in Heerenveen, Friesland, The Netherlands22; died Aft. April 189223. She was the daughter of 10. Pieter Hendriks Bosma and 11. Rinskje Dirks Woudstra.

Notes for Hendrik Bartelds Eggers:
With his application for marriage, Hendrik submitted a National Militia Certificate that stated that he did not have to serve as his number did not come up.

  Notes for Jacoba Pieters Bosma:
Since their son Henry and his wife, Alice Vanderwall Eggers, named three of their children, Aaron, Fanny and Henry, following the traditional Dutch naming pattern, it seems reasonable that their fourth child's name also followed this pattern and was probably named after this grandmother. Therefore, I am guessing that her given name was Josephine.

Marriage Notes for Hendrik Eggers and Jacoba Bosma:
Banns for the marriage were published on 22 and 29 May 1853. A certificate of insolvency was issued in Joure for Hendrik on 14 May 1853, and another for Jacoba in Heerenveen on 9 May 1853. The marriage certificate stated that Hendrik was living in Nijehaske and Jacoba was living in Heerenveen.

In the 1872-1880 Household Register for Terband in 1872, the couple is listed with five children and a servant girl, Aaltje Schippers, no relation, born 8 Feb. 1863. The Household Register for Terband for 1880-1890 indicates that the family moved to Nijehaske on 16 June 1882, except for Femke, who left 7 June 1881 for Nijehaske.

  Notes for Pieter Hendriks Eggers:
The Household Register for Terband for 1872-1880 gives Pieter's date of birth as 19 Feb. 1862, but the Register for 1880-1890 shows it as 19 Feb. 1863.

iv.   Barteld Hendriks Eggers, born July 19, 1864 in Nijehaske, Friesland, The Netherlands25
  Notes for Barteld Hendriks Eggers:

2 v.   Rinze (Richard) Hendriks Eggers, born December 16, 1868 in Terband, Friesland, The Netherlands; died December 25, 1927 in St. Lukes Hosp, Utica NY; married Aaltje (Alice) Arends van der Wal May 21, 1892 in Aengwirden, The Netherlands.
vi.   Rinkje Hendriks Eggers, born April 28, 1872 in Terband, Aengwirden, Friesland, Holland26

      6. Arent Alberts van der Wal, born March 22, 1845 in Terband, Aengwirden, Friesland, Holland27; died November 10, 1930 in Grand Rapids, MI28. He was the son of 12. Albert Arents van der Wal and 13. Aaltje Koops Knol. He married 7. Femmigje Jans Tuiten May 14, 1870 in Aengwirden, The Netherlands29.

      7. Femmigje Jans Tuiten, born September 12, 1846 in Tjalleberd, The Netherlands30; died August 06, 1876 in Luinjeberd, The Netherlands31. She was the daughter of 14. Jan Jans Tuiten and 15. Catharina Kornelis Propstra.

Notes for Arent Alberts van der Wal:
Spelling of his name in signatures on his Petition for Citizenship and also his Declaration of Intent are both Aaren Van der Wal. He arrived in NY City April 11, 1896 from Hamburg, Germany and was naturalized at age 56 on July 26, 1901, according to records obtained from the Oneida County Immigration Office. His Declaration of Intent was filed on June 27, 1896 at the age of 51 and at first gives his name as A.A. V. D. Wal. Neither document gives exact date of birth. On his Affidavit of Petitioner, his name is given at the beginning as AArend Vanderwal, but he signed his name Aarend Van der Wal.

In the Utica City Directories for 1920 and 1926, his name is spelled Aaron Vandernall (sic] and he is listed as a gardener, living at 65 Clinton Street, New York Mills.

The 1920 Census shows a "VanDerwald, Harry" (no wonder I couldn't find him in the index!) at 65 Clinton Street, with the other information appropriate to Arend. He was living alone at that time and is listed as widowed , with occupation as "none". He was then 74. The house was then owned, mortgage free.

The 1900 Census shows Arend's wife's name to be Ada, not Fanny. It has a hash mark instead of a number for length of the marriage, which could mean that the person giving the information did not know. It also shows Ada to be the mother of 8 children, all still living, although only 6 were at home. Alice and Hilda were already married at that time. However, Alice's death certificate lists her mother's name as Fanny, so Ada was a second wife. Alice was the only child to name one of her children Fanny, but several of the other children named a daughter Ada. Fanny Tuiten was the mother of Arend's first two children only, with Ada the mother of another eight, one son having died the day after his birth. Fanny's daughter Catharina outlived her, but died in 1881 at the age of 8. Both marriages took place in the Netherlands.

Arend's occupation then (1900) was given as a dyer, and the house on Clinton St., New York Mills was rented.

His wife is shown again to be named Ada in the NY State Census of 1915. She died in 1916. She was 62 at the time of the 1915 NY State Census. In this Census, his name is given as "Ira". Maybe the Census takers had a hard time understanding his Dutch accent!

In the 1925 NY State Census, "Erin Vanderwald", 80, is listed at #65 Clinton St. with his son Andrew, 35, "Mrs. Andrew", 32, and son Harold, 11.

Arend is listed in the 1928 Utica City Directory but not in 1929. Property transfer documents at the Oneida County Clerk's office show he purchase two acres on Clinton Street in 1902 for $1,115, and sold this same property for $1 in July of 1927 to Arthur D. Cheetham. At that time he went with his children to live in Michigan. Is Arthur Cheetham somehow connected to the family?

More About Arent Alberts van der Wal:
Burial: November 13, 1930, Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MI, Block S, lot 251, plot 1332
Cause of Death: Pneumonia32
Occupation: Workman/gardener33

  Notes for Femmigje Jans Tuiten:
Fanny's daughter Alice's death certificate says her mother was Fanny Tuten, which turned out to be close enough to enable me to obtain a marriage record for Arend and Femmigje and other documents from The Netherlands.

Marriage Notes for Arent van der Wal and Femmigje Tuiten:
When Arent and Femmigje applied to be married, they supplied a Certificate of Insolvency, issued in Heerenveen on 26 April 1870 by the Mayor of Aengwirden. This meant that they were too poor to pay for all of the various certificates required for the marriage application.

The information on their marriage certificate says that Arent's occupation was "workman" and Femmigje was a "maid servant"; he had been living in Tjalleberd, she in Luinjeberd.
