Ancestors of John Humphreys

      6. William Williams, born Abt. 1815 in Llandegai, Caernarvonshire. He married 7. Catherine (Williams).

      7. Catherine (Williams), born Abt. 1813 in Caernarvonshire; died Bef. 1871.

Notes for William Williams:
William is listed as a widower in the 1871 Census.

More About William Williams:
Occupation: Quarryman

Marriage Notes for William Williams and Catherine (Williams):
John and Catherine were from Llanfaes, Anglesey, North Wales.

Children of William Williams and Catherine (Williams) are:
  i.   Evan W. Williams, born August 1840 in Wales; married Margaret E. (Williams) Abt. 1860 in Wales; born March 1841 in Wales.
  Notes for Evan W. Williams:
My grandfather, John Humphreys, was living with Evan and his wife Margaret and their son Arthur at the time of the 1900 U.S. Census, having arrived in (March of) 1899. The passenger list for John's voyage incorrectly lists him as "William" Humphreys (William arrived in 1906), but does indicate that Evan was his uncle.
I am assuming that Evan was a brother to John's mother, Mary Williams Humphreys, until I can find proof one way or the other.

The Census is the source of Evan's date of birth. The Census also indicates that Evan had been naturalized (sometime prior to 13 June 1900) and that they owned their home. The 1870 Census gives Evan's occupation as Slate maker and also gives the value of his Real Estate as $1,500 and his personal property as $150.

In the 1910 Census, he was a widower living with his son Arthur's family, his occupation is given as a Splitter in a Slate Quarry, and he had been out of work for 12 weeks in 1909. He was not working at the time of the Census (he was70 years old...!)

  More About Evan W. Williams:
Occupation: Slate quarryman (as of 1900 Census)

  Notes for Margaret E. (Williams):
The 1900 U.S. Census is the source for Margaret's date of birth.

Marriage Notes for Evan Williams and Margaret (Williams):
On 13 June, 1900, the U.S. Census has recorded that Margaret and Evan had been married for 40 years and had been in this country for 39 years, having arrived in 1861. It also shows that Margaret was the mother of nine children, four of whom were still living. The only one living with them at the time was their son, Arthur E. Williams. My grandfather, John Humphreys, was also living with them, having arrived in (March of) 1899. The passenger list for John's voyage incorrectly lists him as "William" Humphreys (William arrived in 1906), but does indicate that Evan was his uncle.
