Ancestors of Jane (Jennie) Pritchard

Generation No. 2

      2. David Pritchard, born Abt. 1846 in Llandegai, Carnarvonshire, North Wales; died in North Wales. He was the son of 4. Thomas Pritchard and 5. Sarah Jane (Pritchard). He married 3. Margaret Eluned Parry.

      3. Margaret Eluned Parry, born Abt. 1851 in Llanllechid, Carnarvonshire, North Wales; died in Bethesda, North Wales ?. She was the daughter of 6. Evan Parry and 7. Elizabeth (Parry).

Notes for David Pritchard:
Aunt Bess (Elizabeth Humphreys Harrington) said her Taid Pritchard had a beard and used to rub it against her face to tease her!

  Notes for Margaret Eluned Parry:
In an e-mail dated 4 July 1997 from Brian Lewis Jones, great-nephew to Meg Owens, one of Nell Pritchard Owens' daughters, he writes:

Megan remembers flashbacks of conversation with her mother regarding Margaret Eluned Parry (Nell and Jane's mother of course). Here goes: Margaret Eluned Parry lost her mother at the age of 4 or 6. Normally this would have meant the poor house, poverty, malnutrition and low life expectancy. However, Margaret Eluned was adopted by a *bank manager* and his wife from either Betws y coed (20 miles from Tregarth) or Dolgellau (35 miles from Tregarth?). We have no information concerning her siblings at this stage and it is highly likely that she was adopted as a "cute kid" and that contact with her old family would have been discouraged by the adopted family. In those days this family profession would entail a very comfortable upbringing for Margaret Eluned Parry and this may well explain the quiet confidence in this beautiful woman's expression, and after giving birth to 10 children she deserves a medal!

Marriage Notes for David Pritchard and Margaret Parry:
In the 1881 Census for Civil Parish Llanllechid, Urban Sanitary District Bethesda, Ecclesiastical District Glan Ogwen, David and Margaret are listed as living at #36 Cilfodw Street. David's occupation is listed as Quarryman. The census was dated in April 11, 1881. Ages given were: David - 32, wife Margaret 29, daughter Elizabeth 8, daughter Jane 3 and daughter Margaret 1. John Parry, 17, list only as a "relative" also lived with them and worked as a quarryman.

In the 1891 Census, the family is living at the same address, but David's age is given as 44 (he gained an extra two years...), Margaret as 39, Jane 13, Maggie 11, Mary Grace 9, Anne 6, Evan 5 and Ellen 3. This means that John and William were born after this Census (18 April 1891), and since none of the others are twins, John and William must be the siblings who were twins. David could have been born as early as 1846.

Children of David Pritchard and Margaret Parry are:
  i.   Elizabeth (Eliza) Pritchard, born Abt. 1872; died in South Wales ?; met (1) Unknown; married (2) David Roberts Aft. 1885.
  Notes for Elizabeth (Eliza) Pritchard:
Her husband was from South Wales. She had at least one daughter, I think. Did her daughter marry a Sparshott?... from Barry, S. Wales...? She also was the mother of Sophie Pritchard. Sophie's father died before the wedding was to take place, and Sophie was raised by her grandparents as their own.

Marriage Notes for Elizabeth Pritchard and David Roberts:
Don't yet know marriage date, but Eliza daughter, Sophie, was fathered by a prior fiancee, who died before they were to be married, so want David Roberts to show second.

1 ii.   Jane (Jennie) Pritchard, born October 16, 1877 in Bethesda, N. Wales; died December 1963 in Camden, NY; married (1) John Humphreys July 16, 1903 in Ellis Island, New York; married (2) Evan Thomas 1951 in Utica, NY.
iii.   Margaret Pritchard, born Abt. 1879 in Bethesda, N. Wales; married William Parry; born in South Wales.
Marriage Notes for Margaret Pritchard and William Parry:
Margaret and William were first cousins, believed to have emigrated, due to lack of work in the slate quarries, to Australia around the same time that Jane Pritchard and John Humphreys emigrated to the U.S., which would be about 1903 or earlier.

iv.   Mary Grace Pritchard, born Abt. 1881 in Bethesda, N. Wales; died in Rhyl, North Wales ?; married Robert Ellis
  Notes for Mary Grace Pritchard:

Marriage Notes for Mary Pritchard and Robert Ellis:
Mary Grace and Robert lived in Rhyl, North Wales.

  v.   Annie Pritchard, born Abt. 1884 in Bethesda, N. Wales; died in North Wales; married Arthur Becket
  Notes for Annie Pritchard:
Annie and Arthur lived near Manchester, England.

  Notes for Arthur Becket:
He and Annie lived near Manchester, England.

vi.   Evan Pritchard, born Abt. 1887 in Bethesda, N. Wales; died Abt. 1903 in N. Wales.
  Notes for Evan Pritchard:
Birth and death dates are approximate. Drowned when boat capsized while
fishing at age of 19. This happened before his sister Jane and her daughter Bess emigrated to the U.S. in 1903. Bess couldn't understand why he didn't come home to play with her.

Alan Williams' notes indicate that Evan had a twin, but he didn't have the first name of the twin. It may have been John, as Nell Pritchard Owens' notes had a John, but Alan's did not.

  More About Evan Pritchard:
Cause of Death: Drowned; boat capsized

vii.   Ellen (Nell) Pritchard, born March 20, 1888 in Glanogwen, Bethesda, N. Wales; died August 01, 1986 in Tregarth, North Wales ?; married Owen Thomas Owens September 17, 19092; born May 11, 1885 in North Wales2; died 1950 in Tregarth, North Wales ?.
  Notes for Ellen (Nell) Pritchard:
Lived at "Valkyrie", 21 Tanrhiw, Tregarth, N. Wales. Nell's sister Jane's
grandson, John Graham, visited Iris and Alf Griffiths in Tregarth in 1983 when Nell was 95 years old. She knew immediately exactly who he was. Nell was also visited in 1984 by Ellen Humphreys, Jane's great-granddaughter by her son William & his son William, Jr.

Another American relative, Bill Milford visited in 1980 when he spent the spring semester at the University of Bath. When he visited again 5 years later, she was confined to bed. See notes for Bill.

viii.   John Pritchard, born Aft. 1890; died Bef. 1892.
  Notes for John Pritchard:
We have always been told there were twins in my grandmother's family. Was John a twin to Evan? Alan Williams' notes on the family indicate that Evan had a twin. Alan didn't have the twin's first name, but also didn't list a John. If John was Evan's twin, he must have died before the 1891 Census, which does not list either John or William.

ix.   William Henry Pritchard, born Aft. 1890.
  Notes for William Henry Pritchard:
Did not find William in any Census record. He may have been born before 1892 and died before a Census was taken. .
