Ancestors of Richard T. Spotten

      26. William Williams, born Abt. 1815 in Llandegai, Caernarvonshire. He married 27. Catherine (Williams).

      27. Catherine (Williams), born Abt. 1813 in Caernarvonshire; died Bef. 1871.

Notes for William Williams:
William is listed as a widower in the 1871 Census.

More About William Williams:
Occupation: Quarryman

Marriage Notes for William Williams and Catherine (Williams):
John and Catherine were from Llanfaes, Anglesey, North Wales.

Children of William Williams and Catherine (Williams) are:
  i.   Evan W. Williams, born August 1840 in Wales; married Margaret E. (Williams) Abt. 1860 in Wales; born March 1841 in Wales.
  Notes for Evan W. Williams:
My grandfather, John Humphreys, was living with Evan and his wife Margaret and their son Arthur at the time of the 1900 U.S. Census, having arrived in (March of) 1899. The passenger list for John's voyage incorrectly lists him as "William" Humphreys (William arrived in 1906), but does indicate that Evan was his uncle.
I am assuming that Evan was a brother to John's mother, Mary Williams Humphreys, until I can find proof one way or the other.

The Census is the source of Evan's date of birth. The Census also indicates that Evan had been naturalized (sometime prior to 13 June 1900) and that they owned their home. The 1870 Census gives Evan's occupation as Slate maker and also gives the value of his Real Estate as $1,500 and his personal property as $150.

In the 1910 Census, he was a widower living with his son Arthur's family, his occupation is given as a Splitter in a Slate Quarry, and he had been out of work for 12 weeks in 1909. He was not working at the time of the Census (he was70 years old...!)

  More About Evan W. Williams:
Occupation: Slate quarryman (as of 1900 Census)

  Notes for Margaret E. (Williams):
The 1900 U.S. Census is the source for Margaret's date of birth.

Marriage Notes for Evan Williams and Margaret (Williams):
On 13 June, 1900, the U.S. Census has recorded that Margaret and Evan had been married for 40 years and had been in this country for 39 years, having arrived in 1861. It also shows that Margaret was the mother of nine children, four of whom were still living. The only one living with them at the time was their son, Arthur E. Williams. My grandfather, John Humphreys, was also living with them, having arrived in (March of) 1899. The passenger list for John's voyage incorrectly lists him as "William" Humphreys (William arrived in 1906), but does indicate that Evan was his uncle.

More About Evan Williams and Margaret (Williams):
Marriage: Abt. 1860, Wales

ii.   William Williams, born Abt. 1842 in Caernarvonshire.
  More About William Williams:
Occupation: Slate quarrier

iii.   Anne Williams, born Abt. 1845 in Caernarvonshire.
iv.   John Williams, born Abt. 1848 in Caernarvonshire.
  More About John Williams:
Occupation: Slate quarrier by age 12

13 v.   Mary Williams, born 1852 in Carnarvonshire, North Wales; died April 06, 1933 in North Wales; married Richard Humphreys September 09, 1874 in St. Anne's Church, Llandegai, Carnarvonshire, Wales.

      28. Thomas Pritchard, born 1815; died 1874 in North Wales. He was the son of 56. Unknown Pritchard. He married 29. Sarah Jane (Pritchard).

      29. Sarah Jane (Pritchard), died in North Wales.

Notes for Thomas Pritchard:
Eleanor Heydegger's notes say that "William and his wife Elizabeth" had eight children in a little stone house called Tan-yr-Onen in Tregarth, North Wales. He died in 1874, leaving their daughter, Jane, married to Robert Davies, who then lived there with six children. Jane's daughter Annie was still living there in 1968 with her husband Jack Robinson (who died in 1969).

However, as noted elsewhere, her notes show William to be the father of my grandmother Jane's father David. Nell Pritchard Owens' chart shows David's parents to be Sarah Jane and David Thomas Pritchard, not Elizabeth Griffiths and William Pritchard. Iris' notes indicate his name was Thomas, not David Thomas.

Eleanor's notes also show a "Sarah" Pritchard, daughter of this same "William" married to Thomas Ellis, who very definitely married ELIZABETH Pritchard, the daughter of Thomas Pritchard! So my head is swimming, trying to figure out if all the repetition of names confused her, and just HOW DO all these names fit together?!

I will have to get the birth records for all of the individuals listed here as children of Thomas and Sarah to determine if they are all actually siblings or if some are cousins. My mother called some of her mother's cousins "Aunt" and "Uncle", so this practice may be how the confusion arose.

Children of Thomas Pritchard and Sarah (Pritchard) are:
  i.   John Pritchard, born in North Wales; died in North Wales; married Ellen Jones.
  Notes for John Pritchard:
Ellen was John's second wife.

  Notes for Ellen Jones:
Ellen was John's second wife.

ii.   Jane Pritchard, born in North Wales; died in North Wales; married Robert Davies; died 1969 in Pen y Bryn, Bethesda.
  Notes for Jane Pritchard:
Eleanor Heydegger's notes say that after her father's death in 1874, Jane and her husband, Robert Davies, lived in William's little stone house in Tregarth with six children. In 1968, their daughter, Annie, was still living there with her husband, Jack Robinson. This cottage is called Tan-yr-Onen, which Iris Owens Griffiths says was built by David and Thomas W. Pritchard.

The puzzle now is that this Jane is supposed to be a sister to David Pritchard, whose father, according to two recent sources, was David Thomas Pritchard, not William Pritchard. I am still hoping to get all this straightened out.

iii.   Mary Pritchard, born in N. Wales; died in North Wales; married Unknown Parry.
iv.   Thomas W. Pritchard, born 1838 in N. Wales; died 1882 in North Wales; married Anne Williams; born January 19, 1845 in Bethesda, N. Wales; died March 16, 1930 in Maple Dale, NY.
  Notes for Thomas W. Pritchard:
According to Peg Marks, Thomas was a baker in Bangor, N. Wales.

  More About Thomas W. Pritchard:
Burial: Glanangay Cemetery, Bethesda, North Wales

  Notes for Anne Williams:
Anne came to the U.S. in August 1883 with 4 children (Pritchard.)

See notes for her son William regarding their immigration. She died at William's home.

Her obituary says her parents were William and Anne Griffith, but several of the other names in her obituary were incorrect. It said she died at the home of her son, William Edwards. William's surname was Pritchard. It gives one daughter's name as Mrs. John Carl, which should be Mrs. John Carroll, and another as Mrs. Lillian Edwards, which should be Lillian Edwards Jewell and a third as Mrs. P. J. Moon, which should be Mrs. Patrick (Bertha) Moran. Given these mistakes, the fact that her parents names differ from other sources, is not too surprising and cannot be taken as factual.

  More About Anne Williams:
Burial: Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica, NY.

  v.   William Pritchard, born 1840 in N. Wales; died 1880 in North Wales; married Mary (Pritchard); born in Llandegai, North Wales.
vi.   Elizabeth Pritchard, born August 14, 1842 in North Wales; died July 18, 1909 in North Wales; married Thomas Ellis Abt. 1867; born August 07, 1841 in Tregarth, North Wales; died July 27, 1916.
  Notes for Elizabeth Pritchard:
According to the 1900 Federal Census (June 6), Elizabeth immigrated in 1865. It gives her date of birth as August 1843, but the 1880 Census (June 30) gives her age as 37, which agrees with the date of birth from her family's records of 1842.

  More About Elizabeth Pritchard:
Burial: Elmwood Cemetery, Middle Granville, Washington County, NY

  Notes for Thomas Ellis:
According to the 1880 Census for Granville, NY, he was a butcher. He immigrated to the US in 1865 and had been naturalized prior to the 1900 Census.

Burial: Elmwood Cemetery, Middle Granville, Washington County, NY

Marriage: Abt. 1867

14 vii.   David Pritchard, born Abt. 1846 in Llandegai, Carnarvonshire, North Wales; died in North Wales; married Margaret Eluned Parry.

      30. Evan Parry, born Abt. 1828 in Llandegai, Carnarvonshire, North Wales. He married 31. Elizabeth (Parry).

      31. Elizabeth (Parry), born Abt. 1827 in Llanllechid, Carnarvonshire, North Wales.

Notes for Evan Parry:
In the 1891 Census (18 April), #628 Bangor (Caernarvonshire), 3A Llanllechid, Arfon Page 4, Evan and Elizabeth were living at Talybont. Evan was age 62 and Elizabeth 63. Also living with them was an Anne Jones, 55, a laundry maid. Her relationship to the head of the house is listed as "sister". However, she is listed as single rather than widowed, so she may actually be Evan's sister-in-law, possibly Elizabeth's sister. If the latter is the case, Elizabeth's maiden name may have been Jones. Then again, Anne could actually be Evan's sister and either in fact a widow, or they could have had different fathers... Evan's occupation at that time was a quarryman. His place of birth is shown to be Llandegai; Elizabeth and Anne were both born in Llanllechid.

  Notes for Elizabeth (Parry):
If Anne Jones is really Elizabeth's unmarried sister (see notes for her husband, Evan), perhaps an early Census record in Llanllechid could be found for a Jones family with a daughter Elizabeth born about 1827 and a daughter Anne born about 1835... ??

Children of Evan Parry and Elizabeth (Parry) are:
  i.   Unknown Dtr Parry, married Unknown Edwards.
15 ii.   Margaret Eluned Parry, born Abt. 1851 in Llanllechid, Carnarvonshire, North Wales; died in Bethesda, North Wales ?; married David Pritchard.
iii.   William E. Parry, born March 04, 1860 in Bethesda, N. Wales; died February 18, 1930 in West Pawlet, VT; married Dorothy Williams October 31, 1883 in New York City; born May 13, 1864 in Wales; died September 10, 1941 in West Pawlet, VT.
  Notes for William E. Parry:
William was a slate worker and had lived in West Pawlet, VT for 44 years at the time of his death, so possibly immigrated to US about 1886 around the age of 26.
He was buried by McHenry & Roberts of Granville, NY on Feb. 21, 1930. Large tombstone shows date of birth March 4, 1860. Small stone says 1861.

  More About William E. Parry:
Burial: West Pawlet Cemetery, W. Pawlet, VT.
Cause of Death: Pulmonary Tuberculosis

  Notes for Dorothy Williams:
Dorothy was a housewife and had lived in West Pawlet (or at least the USA) for 50 years at time of death, so possibly immigrated about 1891 around the age of 27. The funeral director was Will E. Roberts of Granville, NY.

This is "Aunt Dorothy"... my grandmother, Jane Pritchard's aunt.

Her obituary in the Granville Sentinel says she left a granddaughter, Lenore Dillon, of Denver, Colorado. This is not correct. Her daughter Dorothy's child, Lenore Jones, died in 1924 (17 years earlier). Her granddaughter Aletha Jones Dillon, had a daughter Lenore in 1938, although Aletha is not mentioned in the obituary. Lenore Dillon would be her great granddaughter and would have been only 3 years old.

The obituary says she "was a kind and loyal friend to all and her home was always open to her many friends." My mother, Eleanor Humphreys Graham, remembers her home to always have wonderful aromas; something always cooking!

She was a member of the Congregational church, although the funeral services were held at the Welsh Presbyterian Church in West Pawlet.
