George William Grantham (son of George Grantham and Sabina Bowker) was born 21 Mar 1901 in Manchester, Lancashire, England³², and died 08 Oct 1964 in Manchester, Lancashire, England³³. He married Mary Anne Dodds on 08 Jul 1922 in Manchester, Lancashire, England³⁴, daughter of Mark Dodds and Emma Legg.

George was Fitter and Turner by trade. Not sure where he did the apprenticeship but was sacked prior to age 21 years due to the high cost of labour. Soured his view and was then hesitant to put son Roy into an apprenticeship. He eventually put Roy into a garage to learn.
Dapper dresser in his youth.
Heavy smoker. Not overly robust. Suffered from bronchitis thought to be hereditary (his mother suffered from it?)
No military service as he held a 'required trade.
Got back into his trade at the outbreak of WWII, previously a greaser on he Newton Heath or Lightbowne railway.
Used to go and visit wounded soldiers (WWI) in local hospital.
At one time he injured his hand or thumb and used the compensation money to pay for Ida's wedding.
Unemployed period during the depression. Re employed when Ida was about 13 years old i.e. about 1936/37. Worked for Dempsters and was very loyal to them for giving him a job after 4 years unemployment.
Originally lived in Ancoats but moved to Miles Platting - this was seen as a step up (socially).
Dempsters made equipment for gasometers. They were taken over by 'asset strippers' who also 'pruned' employees. George was given his cards at the age of 63 and he died the same day.

George is shown as a metal turner on Roy's M/C.

On fathers D/C, address for George William is 8 Pentland Ave Moston. NB GW registered his fathers death on his own birthday, 21/3.
