Mark Dodds (b. 20 Aug 1860, d. 27 Jul 1943)
Mark Dodds (son of William Dodds and Mary Ann Williams) was born 20 Aug 1860 in Sheffield, England, and died 27 Jul 1943 in Manchester, England. He married Emma Legg on 10 Dec 1890 in Shoreditch, London, England, daughter of James Legg and Emma.
Notes for Mark Dodds:
Dodds owned a big shop in Swan St Manchester It was a big hardware store. Possibly a Sheffield connection with the steel industry that was then at Sheffield. Ida can picture spades hanging up and oil containers.
Mark Dodds mother owned a shop in Castleton in Derbyshire.
Mark Dodds was a commercial traveller. Delat with, amongst other things with 'fents', (bolts of cloth) and cloth samples. He 'travelled' in materials. White Chapel, near Shoreditch where they lived, was where all the tayloring was done. Many Jewish taylor shops. He travelled this area to Manchester regularly. He was very much into 'music hall' and knew all the words to the music hall songs. Was a bit of a lad and enjoyed his drink. Probably how he met his wife Emma, who worked as a bar maid.
I remember Roy Grantham senior telling of his favourite Grandad Mark. He was a good teller of yarns. Roy thought Mark was a bit of a pisspot and not held in high regard by the rest of the Dodds family. Thought Mark was disinherited as a result.
Mark and Emma's house was in Hugo St off Lightbowne Road Moston (not New Moston). Mary Ann considered that the neibourhood was a 'debtor's retreat' though Ida is not sure why this was so. Possibly due to unemployment and the depression.
