Descendants of John * SKINNER

Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN *2 SKINNER  (JAMES1) was born December 14, 1770 in Chipstable,Somerset,Eng.(either 1770 or 71, and died in possible sets of parents, see NOTES =Ash Prior Ch..  He married ELIZABETH * JOYCE July 16, 1794 in Ash Priors, Somerset Co, England, daughter of JOHN JOYCE and SARAY WAY.  She was born Abt. 1775 in England - probably Wevelscombe, Somerset.

Notes for JOHN * SKINNER:

The Brit.Isle IGI cd shows 2 possible John SKINNER births in Somerset in the expected time:  One Born at Chipstable, Somerset, 12-14-1770, of parents James & Phillis SKINNER (no maiden name).  The other christened at Horsington, Somerset 11-10-1771, with parents John & Susannah SKINNER (also no maiden name).  It is likely that one of these is the correct set of parents, but have no way of knowing which one?  There were several Elizabeth JOYCEs born in England around then, but NONE shown from Somerset.  John Symonds who runs an internet page on the Somerset /Dorset counties from his home in Australia has shown me that of the 2 couples above James & Phillis are the most likely parents of mine due to the closer proximity to Chipstable to Ash Priors than Horsington.

January 2001 - I've just been sent a 3rd set of parents for my John SKINNER, f/o Robert. - that is father John SKINNER - md. Elizabeth "Betty" BRAINE, d/o James BRAINE - married 1760 at Lydeard, S. Lawrence, a town only a few miles from Ash Priors.   So to summarize the possible parents and their marriages and BD of their sons John.

1.) John SKINNER  & Elizabeth "Betty" BRAINE  - had son John  b. 1764, baptized at  Lyneard, St. Lawrence.

2.) James SKINNER &  Phillis (?) had son John, born Dec. 14, 1770, born at Chipstable, Somerset.

3.) John SKINNER  & Susannah (?) had son John, christened  Oct. 11, 1771 at Horsington, Somerset.

We are nearly certain Robert was s/o John SKINNER & Elizabeth JOYCE who were married at Ash Priors and that Robert was christened at Ash Priors in 1801.

Previously I'd thought # 2 above was the most likely parents - because Chipstable was closer to Ash Priors than was Horsington ..... but by the same closer proximity reasoning, we would now have to conclude  that parents #3 are most likely - Lydeard St. Lawrence appears to be only 3 miles North of Ash Priors whereas  Chipstable is about 10 miles West from Ash Priors.    Horsington is much farther than either.    Also it appears that the town Elizabeth Joyce came from,  Clatworthy is due West of Lydeard S.L, about 8 miles (but is only about 2 miles North of Chipstable)  - so .... ?

Notes for ROBERT * SKINNER:

The British Isles IGI cd shows Robert Skinner with the exact same BD as we have from Kenneth Skinners info.: May 1, 1801 & the IGI shows him christened on June 18, 1801 @ Ash Priors, Somerset, Eng. & listed the parents as John SKINNER & Elizabeth JOYCE.  I have a JPG photo of the Ash priors church downloaded from the net.    His Gravestone in Champaign Co, Illinois, USA  says  died age 83 yrs., 16 days on May 23,

Nov. 1994 - see son James' notes but in summary, 2 historical books at the Tuscola library strongly suggest Robert & son James were both born in England and migrated to U.S in 1854 or 1855 with Robert's 2nd wife (sister of 1st wife) and his 8 children, thus James was raised by his Step-Mother who was also his Maternal Aunt!.   Census indexes show a Robt. Skinner in the 1860 census located in LaSalle Co., Northville Twp page 089; and one in Warren Co., Monmouth Twp. pg 398.  As of this date, I cannot figure out when or where Robert died so I will try to check these census' and obituaries in these 2 counties.  At the same time there are several James Skinners in Illinois - see his notes.     Robert is found on the June 28,  1870 census  in Vermillion Co, IL - Page 379/ 29, Sidell Twp. He was then listed as a 69 y.o. Farmer,  He, wife and all 4 children then  b. in England, living with wife Ann 55, Amelia 23,  George 19 & Henry 17.  George is shown as a farm laborer.  Rhoda should have been 22 y.o. then and the fact that she is not living with them in 1870 probably suggests she married by then (although may have been a live in maid or nanny?).

In September 1998 I finally discovered that in fact Robert Skinner and wife Anna did live and die in Champaign Co, IL - both in 1883.   They are buried in the Lost Grove Cem. just SW of Homer, IL @ the corner of 2500E & 800N.   Their farm was just barely within Champaign Co, on the Western border of Vermillion Co.

Brief history:

1801 - Born in England

1841 - James, 5th child is born

1843 - 1st wife, mary died (date best approximated) - about 1844 married Ann Rich,  Mary's younger sister.

1854/ 55 emigration to NY with 2nd wife and 8 children -then on to Chicago

1854/55 - made a home at Elk Grove, IL - West of Chicago for about 10 years - allegedly worked on a farm West of Chicago ?

1864 (about) - moved to Shelby Co, IL - rented a farm

mid 1860s - spent one year in Coles Co, IL (where apparently James & William remained for awhile.

1870 Census Vermillion Co. - Sidell Twp. - late 1860s thru 1871 lived in Vermillion Co, IL

1871/2 bought land at Eastern edge of Champaign Co, IL (just west of Vermillion Co.)

1883 - wife, Ann died in March, then within 2 months Robert dies in Champaign Co, IL

1870 census: Robert & Mary living in Vermillion Co, IL, Sidell Twp. on the June 28, 1870 census.  They are ages 69 & 55 respectively.  There are still 3 children with them, Amelia age 23, George 19 & Henry 17.   All show born in England.  Robert is listed as a Farmer.     By 1870 his sons, James age 29 and William 33 are both living in Coles Co, IL - still not very far from their father and Step-Mother (also their Aunt).    On that same Census page, Rhoda is living with John JUNKINS (or JENKINS) immediately next door to Robert. - That census is shown in the scrapbook on this program.

Generation No. 3

4.  WILLIAM HENRY4 SKINNER (ROBERT *3, JOHN *2, JAMES1) was born January 9, 1837 in England; See NOTES/ MORE, and died July 22, 1923 in Spokane, WA; listed in Bio of George in Champaign Co..  He married JULIA REBECCA HIGGINS Abt. 1860 in Possibly state of Maine - city of Bath, Poss. Mass., daughter of SOLOMON HIGGINS and MS. GREENLEAF.  She was born March 6, 1839 in PA; per the 1870 Coles Co, IL & 1900 census, and died December 7, 1923 in Spokane, WA.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY SKINNER:

There is a William SKINNER on the 1870 census with the exact right age of 33 y.o. then living in Humboldt Twp, Coles Co, IL - fairly near James on the same census.   This William is living then as a Farmer with quite a bit of property value (5,500) & other personal value (1800), born in England and living with wife, Julia - born in Penn., age 31.  Their children all born in Ilinois are Ruth - age 8, Walter 6, Franklin 4, George 2  & Fannie 2 months.   I assume this is  William Henry,  Robert's son.   Will require more research to be more confident.    Family history shows this man was living in Idaho after moving from Coles Co, IL.   Be careful - there is a Wm. H. SKINNER on the Idaho 1880 census at Bear Lake County in Georgetown... but he is only 21 years old (born about 1859) and from NY.  He also has a one year old son, Wm. H., Jr. - none of the Skinner's I see on the 1880 census of Idaho appear familiar to me.   He may still be East in 1880.

May 2001:   Mary Snell has written an Email to me and has sent proof that her Mother-In-Law, Ruby & her Husband, Kenneth are William Henry's descendants - she supplied much detail about William Henry's children and wife - all consistent with what little I knew - and much more I didn't know - which all I previously knew was mostly taken from the Coles Co, census of 1870 and one sentence from a biograph about George Skinner, his half-brother - that listed Wm Henrys wife's name as Julia.    The census gave several children with ages and names the same as those Mary Snell has sent.

Mary sent information regarding the 1900 census when when  William H. Skinner reported he arrived to the U.S. in 1847.   This is the first time we've seen a significantly different date whereas before, the biographies and census of the others reported only one years difference - 1854 & 53.    I think it is likely William's is accurate - and so is either the 1854/ 53, in that William very well may have come to the U.S. by himself or with other friends / cousins, etc. but not with his father or other sibs.    He was after all the eldest Male child.    It is certainly feasible that he gave good reports of his work and living in the U.S. such that Robert decided to bring the rest of the family over 7 or 8 years after William arrived.     Mary has sent history telling that in William's younger years in the U.S. he was a cook on ocean going ships.    I wonder if this means he may have gotten Robert & family across easier than others - and may have gone through such different channels that they didn't get on regular ship manifests.   Plenty of theories this spurs us to, but no real answers as we still can't locate anything on their actual ocean voyage.   She also has handed down information showing Wm H. married Julia Higgens in Lincoln County, Maine, city of Bath - Now however it appears Bath is in Sagadahoc County.    Mary has researched this and discovered that the city of Bath was in Lincoln Co, til the borders changed in April 4, 1954 to make a new county = Sagadahoc Co.    It seems so far, that William Henry didn't pass on any information about his parents - even the name Robert & Mary  Rich.   Nor that they were in Champaign County, IL  - or that his parents and He even originated in Somersetshire, England - only that they came from England.

Many of his children had land inheritance that Wm. Henry left his children at Hayden Lake, Idaho - but there are no more Skinner's found in that area now.

Notes for JAMES (1) * SKINNER:

Nov. 94- A book in the Tuscola, IL library "Biographical sketches of Douglas Co., IL" states James was born in Somersetshire, England on the date we have and "Arrived with his parents in America OCTOBER, 1854." This is a very interesting book and coupled with another one there on the history of Douglas Co. which I made several copies of, give a plethora of information. The latter book offers one small contradiction (1855 emigration rather than 1854), but adds much more saying he was born in BRIDGWATER, SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND and emigrated on a sailing vessel that landed in New York and he thence went to Cook Co., IL where the Father Robert Skinner worked on a farm west of Chicago.  His parents, Robert, Mary & Ann's Birth dates are from these books.  These two books cannot be fairly summarized here so they are a must reading to anyone looking at this genealogy note.  His father, Robert, apparently rented a farm in Shelby Co. during the Civil War, then rented land in Vermillion Co. and in 1871 or 1872 he bought a tract of 200 acres in Champaign County, and lived there most of his adult life.  Two mothers are mentioned for James: apparent actual Mother was Mary (RICH) SKINNER who died in England in 1843, and then his Father (Robt.) married Mary's sister Ann.  Birthdates of all these parents are given as well as an extensive Civil War history with the Company D, 21st Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry.  He was allegedly at the following Battles: Frederickstown, Corinth, Perryville, Stone River, and Chickamauga (where he was captured).   He was imprisoned at a Pemberton tobacco-house at Richmond, then Danville, VA, then finally Andersonville Prison, and still moved to other sites for a total imprisonment of 17 months, 20 days.      There are the following James SKINNERs in the 1860 Illinois census: Coles Co. Humboldt Twp pg 087 & Douglas Co. Camargo Twp. pg 884 & James G. in Shelby Co. Ocaner P.O. pg 398., any one of these seems likely candidates.  Also see his father's notes for more census & obituary information to find.

James is on the 1870 census Page 4/265B in Okaw Twp., age 29, Farmer born in England - living with Anna 20, and only one child, Samuel age 3 (John Wm. was not born til 2 more years).  It states both she and Samuel are born in Illinois.   They are living 4 households away from Anna's parents, Samuel Cheney & Elizabeth Ellis.

Summer 1865, he purchased a team of horses and rented land in Coles Co. IL for 2 years (with $700 back pay income from service).

Aug. 30, 1866 married Ann Cheney, d/o Samuel Cheney & Elizabeth Ellis.

1867 purchased 40 acres of land, moved into a log house, farmed there until 1869

1869 sold above land (believe in Douglas Co, IL?) and bought 40 acres in Coles Co. and from then continued to add til he had 225 acres in Coles Co.

1870 - on Coles Co. Census, age 29, living with wife, Anna age 20 and Samuel age 3.   at same time Robert is in Vermillion Co. & William in Coles Co.

1881 purchased the Dr. Martin farm of 175 Acres in Arcola Twp, Douglas Co. and by 1882 had moved there.

1886 he retired and moved to the city of Arcola, but he moved back and forth to the farm vs. city a few more times. by this time he owned 265 Acres in Coles Co. and 135 Acres in Douglas Co., but later resided mostly at the Arcola home in the city.  He served 3 years as Road Commisioner of Arcola Twp. and as a member of the School Board of Arcola.

1900 - June 4 - Census -living in the city of Arcola, age 59, Retired Farmer - Immigrated 1954 with wife, but shows her then as Hanna but should be Anna - and the only other person is a listed as a servant, Nellie Johnson.

June 2001,  Email from Carol Anderson, wife of Amelia's descendant:    Amelia > Effie May SKINNER > Harold PROUTY  (Carol's husband's Grandfather).   Carol relates Effie & new husband Burt PROUDY homesteaded in Montana.    Also of interest is that she has handed down information that claims Amelia came to the U.S. at age 12 with her family.    That would put the date of immigration to  1857 to 58, extending the range of different dates of migration we've heard from as early as 1847 to as late as 1858.     James handed down the dates of 1854/ 55 as date of migration.   Of course it is possible that some did come at different times, but as of now, we don't have ship records on any of them.

Children of AMELIA SKINNER and WILLIAM HATFIELD are:

Notes for RHODA J. SKINNER:

There is a Rhoda SKINNER on the Cook Co, Elk Grove Twp. 1860 census, Page 283.    She is listed as age 11 and living with several other people, surnames HUBBARD & DRAPER, but NO Skinners or other names I recognize.    The age & Location are as expected for our Rhoda, but she is listed as born in Illinois.   I suspect that is not significant since the person supplying the information probably didn't have a lot of knowledge about her heritage.   By June 28, 1870 she is found on the Vermillion Co,  IL, Sidell Twp, Post Office Indianola, census page 29 / 379.    She is shown as age 21 from England and living with her 26 y.o. husband John JENKINS  (not JUNKINS, etc.) and their only child, a son, Alva, 8 months old.    Alva & John both born in Illinois.

14.  JOHN * WILLIAM5 SKINNER (JAMES (1) *4, ROBERT *3, JOHN *2, JAMES1) was born February 20, 1872 in Illinois; maybe Born:Feb.23rd - went by "Will", and died August 24, 1942 in Arcola, IL in a Mausoleum there.  He married (1) ALDA E. * STOVER August 22, 1895 in Galton, Arcola Twp, Douglas Co.IL, daughter of DANIEL STOVER and SUSAN WOLFORD.  She was born December 31, 1871 in Middletown, Ohio- Butler Co.; 1900 census says 1873, and died June 23, 1937 in Arcola, Douglas Co. IL; see NOTES.  He married (2) SUELLA RAYBURN (?) SKINNER October 25, 1939 in 1st wife, Alda died 1937.  She was born Abt. 1880 in this was John's 2nd wife (after Anna died).

Notes for JOHN * WILLIAM SKINNER:

John is on the 1920 census with his age erroneously corrected to 58 when it should be 48, same as Alda's.   That census is from the city of Arcola, and it correctly lists his parents birth places.    Virginia LAWRENCE in Pittsburg, KS tells me her Grandfather, John William went by "Will".

Notes for ALDA E. * STOVER:

Initially there were other versions of her name (STOKER), but both her marriage certificate and her death certificate show it as STOVER.  What is different about the 2 certificates is the 1st name of her Father: the death Cert. reads David and the Marriage C. reads Daniel.  The Marriage C. would seem to me to be more likely correct.  Both show her Mother as being Sue WOOLFORD, and both parents born in Ohio, and her being born in Middleton, OH.  I suspect this is Middletown, (between Dayton & Cincinnati), However I have discovered a tiny town named Middleton on the far Eastern border of Ohio, south of Youngstown, just SE of Columbiana; & NW of Pittsburgh, PA.  I need to get her obituary from June 1937 to finalize her research.   Later I found solid data showing her family in Butler Co, OH, thus making the correct town that of Middletown in Eastern Butler Co.    I've also been in contact - analog mail - with descendants of Alda's only sibling (a brother died at age 5), her sister Ella.   Apparently Ella & her husband moved to Port Arthur, TX from Douglas Co., about the turn of the century - and some still live there.

Children of JOHN SKINNER and ALDA STOVER are:

                   i.    JAMES * CLIFFORD6 SKINNER, b. May 12, 1898, Arcola, IL; d. May 6, 1962, Decatur, IL 6 days short of 64 years old of Emphysema; m. EDNA * VIOLA BROTHERTON, June 1, 1921, Mattoon, IL; b. July 4, 1900, Mattoon, IL; d. October 18, 1994, Lakeland, FL.

J.C. was on the 1920 census of the city of Arcola at age 21, still living with John W. & Alda and his younger sister, Lucille

Notes for EDNA * VIOLA BROTHERTON:

When I first met my wife's Grandmother, Edna in 1976, she was a very frail, small, friendly lady who lived in Decatur, IL. She had been widowed for 14 years by then and seemed quite capable of being independent and seemed to enjoy remaining so.  However, as she became older, and somewhat demented, her only living child, Kenneth (Ann's Uncle) moved her next door to he & his wife in Connecticut.  She continued to deteriorate and needed to be moved to a nursing home.  In her last 5 years she usually did not recognize her family, and had major medical problems, kept alive in an unnatural state by modern medicine.  She died after Kenneth elected to move her to Florida where they were also moving to.   -  Allan Griffith
