Descendants of David * WILLIAMSON

Generation No. 1

1.  DAVID *6 WILLIAMSON  (HENDRICK *5, DAVID *4, AERT *3, WILLIAM AERTSE *2, AERT *1 WILLIAMSE) was born January 5, 1780 in Monmouth Co. NJ; Poss. B:12-4-1780 ?, and died September 29, 1855 in Probably OH; Parents equivocal see NOTES.  He married MARGARET * LEFFERSON May 2, 1805 in Poss. Freehold, NJ (may be 1813 ?), daughter of AUKE LEFFERTS and SARAH SCHENCK.  She was born May 28, 1775 in NJ; May be LEFFERTS   (same derivation), and died August 19, 1850 in Probably Butler Co, OH;  see NOTES.

Notes for DAVID * WILLIAMSON:

Herein lies one of the more difficult cases in Ann's Skinner tree.  The IGI lists 4 references for a David Williamson being born in Monmouth County, New Jersey - 2 in 1778 & 2 in 1780.  Each pair I believe are the same but not all 4 the same.  The one born in 1780 (The date I had originally been handed down, and so for now will assume the more likely ancestor) have the same name for a Father (Hendrick Williamson but very interestingly on the surface different mothers: Neeltje Couwenhoven & Nellie Conover..... ..I think too close for coincidence and therefore very likely the same Mother!! One original Dutch and the other the anglicized equivalent.  Unfortunately, although the birth YEARS are the same, Neeltje's son is listed as born in June 15 and Nellie's son born Dec. 24. I personally suspect this is the result of baptism & birth listings & this could mean that the cd is picking up the way the family gave different names at each occasion.

Now the other 2 are simpler: both Christened (B.D. not given) April 12, 1778 and the same Father's (William Williamson), but they too have slightly different Mother's names, but more certainly the same (Leona BROWN or BROWER & Lena BREWER). (LDS source film call Nos, etc. on my computer printouts from IGI.

To further complicate matters I have just had (1-24-97) contact from Tom KEHR (tfknh@aol.com) researching WILLIAMSONS from NJ.  He has a Lt. John WILLIAMSON, bapt.5-28-1747 @ Freehold, NJ.  John married Lucretia TICE and he believes this couple had a son David!! They lived near Cranbury NJ, and John died March 13, 1800 Amwell Twp. NJ.  He goes on to say this John's father was William WILLIAMSON, born in NY of father Elbert WILLIAMSON. William married Antje VOORHESE at the Marlboro Dutch Ch. Dec.19,1739.  Wm. died 1773/74.  This information is from a book "The Quest for William WILLIAMSON" by Harriet (Mott) Stryker-Rodda from NY Genealogical record, Jan. 1975 pg.12. And that the original Dutch name for the Williamson clan was AERTSZEN, then has been altered to AERTSE & ORSOR.  He states this book says the founder of the family was William of Barneveldt, Holland in the 1600s.

David is found on the Ohio 1850 census 3 months after his wifes death, and he is living then (Oct.1850) with son Garrett (see his NOTES) & his family.

A review of Tax list CD# 136 of the colonial states prior to 1790 shows

all these first names in Monmouth Co, at the time David & Garrett was born. There was a Hendrick in Monmouth Co., Freehold Twp. 1784-1789 &

Somerset Co, E. Precinct 1784-87.

There was John WILLIAMSON on the tax list in several counties:  Monmouth, Gloucester, Somerset, Burlington, & Middlesex.

I presume that these same first names may be the same person, but who owned properties in more than one location.  It may also be that the counties divided into different geographic lines with new names for counties or townships at different times?

Notes for MARGARET * LEFFERSON:

Her husband David was on the October 1850 census at Butler co. OH, living with his son Garrett, just 3 months after Margaret died.  He was also on the 1840 census.  I checked the pre 1790 tax cd# 136 for all the colonial states, there was only one County, even only two Townships with any LEFFERSONs... thats right - Monmouth County, with the following four (probably actually only 3 mentioned as I suspect 2 are the same with different spellings)

1. Anmery      Dover Twp.        Pg.005   July Tax    1779

2. Oukey       Freehold Twp.        011   Oct.        1781

3. Oakley         "                 012   July        1784

4. Benjamin    Dover Twp.           005   Tx?         1786

Unfortunately this doesn't dispell the notion that the name was actually LEFFERTS... In checking the same tax lists, there were that name spellings, but also LEFFORDSON and a few others, in fact these same names, Benjamin, & Oakley were shown under those spellings also at other tax times.... None in any state but NJ, and all but one in Monmouth Co.

The other first names found were to numerous to list, but were primarily John, Benjamin & Oakley, with one Derrick.

This gives only 5 names as possible father for Margaret:

Anmery, Benjamin, Derrick, John & Oakley

2.  HENDRICH (2)7 WILLIAMSON (DAVID *6, HENDRICK *5, DAVID *4, AERT *3, WILLIAM AERTSE *2, AERT *1 WILLIAMSE) was born November 21, 1808 in Monmouth, NJ (on NA IGI cd) see NOTES, and died in (he, their 1st child was only 1 not B.inOH.  He married DEBORAH (?) WILLIAMSON Abt. 1831 in Children from 1850 Farfield twp.Butler Co..  She was born 1812 in Ohio.

Notes for HENDRICH (2) WILLIAMSON:

Heinrich or Hendrich was on page 348 of the 1850 Butler Co.Madison Twp.,OH census with Deborah, and 2 sons & 5 girls.  The BD are only from the census AGES so may be 1 year off. They are living close to his Brother Garrett and their father David, then living with Garrett, just 3 months after their Mother Margaret LEFFERSON died.

Children of HENDRICH WILLIAMSON and DEBORAH WILLIAMSON are:

                   i.    NICHOLAS8 WILLIAMSON, b. 1832.

                  ii.    ELIZABETH WILLIAMSON, b. 1835.

                 iii.    MARGARET WILLIAMSON, b. 1836.

                 iv.    CYNTHIA A. WILLIAMSON, b. 1839.

                vii.    HENDRICK WILLIAMSON, b. 1848.

3.  GARRETT (2) *7 WILLIAMSON (DAVID *6, HENDRICK *5, DAVID *4, AERT *3, WILLIAM AERTSE *2, AERT *1 WILLIAMSE) was born May 2, 1815 in Middletown, Madison Twp.,Butler Co.,OH(PA?, and died April 23, 1891 in Butler Co, OH; see NOTES for he & Father.  He married JULIA * ANN HETZLER March 20, 1845 in Montgomery Co, (or Butler Co., OH?) (NOTES, daughter of MICHAEL HETZLER and SUSANNAH BLINN.  She was born October 26, 1826 in Butler Co., OH; see Notes on She & Father, and died April 22, 1910 in Names HITZLER & HEPTER found to be errors.

Notes for GARRETT (2) * WILLIAMSON:

The NA IGI cd shows David Williamson & Margaret Lefferts had a son May 2,1815, born in Middletown, OH. (The only report that suggests a different Birth state for Garrett is Margaret's Death Cert. which says Garrett was born in PA.-I think that is less reliable, as all the census' agree with being born in OH).  This same couple had the other several children all in Middletown, except the first one, who has the name of the Grandfather:  Heinrich, born in Monmouth, NJ 1808. So I assume David & Margaret migrated from NJ to OH sometime between 1808, & 1812.

I have discovered a Garrett WILLIAMSON married a Mary CRAYTON Dec 28, 1835 in Floyd Co. IN....this could have been his first wife whom he would have married at age 20 then later married at age 35?  To further complicate matters, Margaret WILLIAMSON's death cert. says Garrett was born in Pennsylvania.  Also the Butler Co.,1850 Ohio census Page 248, Fairfield Twp. shows a Garret WILLIAMSON age 62 (implies BD 1788!) listed as a farmer, living with Female Abby WILLIAMSON age 39 (doesn't say wife- could be daughter-in-law), male J.W. WILLIAMSON age 31 or 37 or 39? listed as a physician, next a male with first name (maybe John?) I can't read WILLIAMSON age 26 student,  George (something that looks like CLASE?) age 18, & Margaret CONNAUGHTON age 19.  There was no profession shown for Abby, Margaret or George.  In the same census, but in Madison Co, Page 348, there is Hendrick WILLIAMSON, age 42 (implies BD 1808) born in NY (this man & dates are equivalent to the son of David & Margaret LEFFERTS at the top of this page) with presumed wife Deborah age 38 born in Ohio as is all of children below, Nicholas 18, Elizabeth 15, Margaret 14 (implies BD 1836 - 9 years older than our Margaret!), Cynthia A. 11, Ellen 8, Eliza 4, & Hendrick 2.

Our Garrett age 36 is shown on the Butler Co. 1850 census Pg.356 Madison Twp. with his Father David age 70 (both Farmers) (Davids wife Margaret LEFFERSON had just died (Aug.1850) 3 months before that census was taken (October 1850) and Julia A. age 26, with children: Margaret age 4, Catherine age 2 & Phebe age 11 months.  They are also on the 1860 census, Pg.74

Our Garrett is shown on the 1880 census Pg.153 in Madison Twp. living with Julia A. & 3 remaining children, John age 24, Sarah 21, & George 16.

The whole family is listed as born in Ohio, with Julia's mother from OH (Susan), her Father from PA, and BOTH of Garrett's parents from NJ.

In July 1997, I visited his grave @ Elk Creek Cemetary, 2 miles West of West Middletown, OH, on North side of Hwy 122.  This is the same cemetary where Hannah & Jacob WOLFORD are buried.    Carol Rose has sent me a copy of his obituary.   It adds nothing new to my information but can be found in a book by Joseph Dale Fry on Pg. 51 titled "Old obituaries of Generations Gone By."    It does say that Garrett died near Poast Town, Butler Co.

Notes for JULIA * ANN HETZLER:

I analyzed ALL Hepter, Hetzler, & Hitzler names in the FTM index.  There were NO Hepter names listed in Ohio at any time & only about 5 in the whole country for the span of the whole index... thus a very rare name.  There were many Hitzler & even many MORE Hetzler names, but still easily

manageable for the years 1820 & 1830 so will need to go to the Ohio census:

1820, Ohio Census Index

HITZLER, only 2 shown:  Abram & George Jr. AND none in 1830 or 1840.

HETZLER, only 3 shown:  Jacob Sr., John & George.

1830, Ohio census Index:

HETZLER, only 3 shown (only 2 males): Andrus, Jacob & Christina

George is not shown in 1830 but is again in 1840?

1840, Ohio census Index:

HETZLER, only 4 shown (only 3 males): George, Peter, Polser & Catherine

Until I see the census material it would be hard to guess, but it seems most likely to me that Both the Hitzler & Hetzler names are actually the same... and that Julia's Father should be one of these 5:

 1. Abram HITZLER,  2. George HITZLER, Jr.,  3. Jacob HETZLER,

3. John HETZLER, 4. George HETZLER  or  5. Andrus HETZLER.

Its also could be that Christina or Catherine could be a widowed Mother of Julia, and that Polser or Peter could could be older brothers?

- mag;   Ruth Lenore (BROTHERTON) KNOX recalls the name HETZLER for her Great-Grandmother's name, but she is not in a totally reliable state of mind at age 88 (1996).

Dec. 1996: connections via the internet & email allowed me to find someone who had details on Julia Ann HETZLER's origins & sibs... See notes on her Father Michael HETLZER.

There is data in the Ohio genealogy sources that show Julia md Garrett WILLIAMS (not ending in "SON), in Montgomery Co., also in 1845. I think too coincidental to be another marriage.

The Butler Co. genealogy homepage shows the marriage of Juliann HETZLER to Garrett WILLIAMS (both his and her names spelled odd), are shown for 1845 in Montgomery Co, however there also is a marriage of Julia A. HETZLER to Ellis SNODGRASS with no date shown in Miami Co, OH.

Children of GARRETT WILLIAMSON and JULIA HETZLER are:

4.                i.    MARGARET * ANN8 WILLIAMSON, b. August 29, 1846, Butler County, Ohio; d. August 5, 1922, Mattoon, IL- age 76.

                  ii.    CATHERINE WILLIAMSON, b. February 21, 1848; d. lived in Franklin, IN in 1922; m. T. A. CHILDS, REV.; b. Abt. 1848.

                 iii.    PHOEBE A. WILLIAMSON, b. October 17, 1849, or 1850; d. Bef. 1922.

                 iv.    MARY MAGDALENE WILLIAMSON, b. June 8, 1853; d. February 3, 1855.

                  v.    JOHN D. WILLIAMSON, b. March 4, 1856; d. January 25, 1905, Butler Co, OH, buried at Elk Cr. Cem..

                vii.    GEORGE W. WILLIAMSON, b. October 30, 1863, or 1863; Middle I. may be "M" ?; d. 1931, Lived in Middletown, OH in 1922; m. SARAH AMANDA CRAUDER; b. 1867; d. 1942.

Generation No. 3

4.  MARGARET * ANN8 WILLIAMSON (GARRETT (2) *7, DAVID *6, HENDRICK *5, DAVID *4, AERT *3, WILLIAM AERTSE *2, AERT *1 WILLIAMSE) was born August 29, 1846 in Butler County, Ohio, and died August 5, 1922 in Mattoon, IL- age 76.  She married GEORGE * WALTER HARTLEY September 10, 1867 in Butler Co, OH; her obit says Sept.12, 1866 - error, son of WILLIAM HARTLEY and ELIZABETH HARTLEY.  He was born March 6, 1842 in Miami Co? or Germantown, Montgomery Co.,OH, and died September 15, 1897 in Mattoon, IL, Parents may be William & Elizabeth?.

Notes for MARGARET * ANN WILLIAMSON:

Nov 1994 - I obtained her death certificate from the Coles Co. Clerk. It shows her Father, Garrett Williamson being born in Pennsylvania...but a prior source (Virginia HARTLEY) said he was born in Butler Co. OH which is the same county her cert. shows for the birthplace of her Mother. It also shows her Mother's maiden name as HEPTER instead of HITZLER (V.Hartley had sent papers that she had written the HITZLER name on.)   The Certificate shows her location at the time of death was 2512 Prairie, Mattoon & age as 76 years, 11 months which confirms earlier information we had.  The information on the certificate was supplied by her son Harry Hartley.  I would like to find more Hartley descendants to see if they can help.  Virginia Hartley's adddress was (1991) 7632 Ellis Rd., Melbourne, FL 32904, I will try to write her about the discrepancies in case she is interested in following new leads.

Dec. 1994 - I found Margaret A. Williamson age 14, on the 1860 Ohio, Butler Co., Madison Twp. Roll 941 Page 305 census, living with Garrett age 45, Julia A. 34, Carthriana (SP?) 12, Phebe I. 10, John D. & Sarah E. age 1.  Oddly enough this was within a block of Susan Woolford age 17 both families living there in 1860!

Margaret's obituary is quite informative, but of course says nothing about George's background as he died 24 yrs. earlier.

It does give the information I have noted on the family sheet page about surviving sibs & their locales in 1922.   It also says she died at the home of her son Harry HARTLEY, and says they had been in Illinois about 6 yrs when George died (1891?).  It gives the marriage date as 9-12-1866 instead of 9-10-1867 as I previously had.

Notes for GEORGE * WALTER HARTLEY:

This Germantown I have listed as birthplace, may be German Township.

As of Jan.97, the only census I can find George on is 1860, Butler Co, Melford Twp., Roll 940 very near the end of the roll, page205; Here is shown only as G.W. with the correct age, 18 years, living with an older man John McCLEARY, 46 who is shown as a farmer.  I assume George is living with him as a farm hand, but no occupation is written.  The only other comments on this line is that he was born in Ohio, and he had attended school within the year.  Unfortunately I cannot find him on any census in Ohio before or after 1860.

Incidentally noted is a George Hartley on the 1870 & 1880 census living at Richwood Post office, Claiborne Twp, Union Co, OH (quite a bit North of Butler Co.)  In 1870 this George, age 25 (should be 27 or 28, if ours) is living with a presumed parents, Larzarus age 63 & Eisabeth (doesn't look like Elizabeth?) age 65, also living with them are John age 37, Margaret E. 33 (our information on our Margaret WILLIAMSON shows her born 3 years later than George, making her expected age on the 1870 census 25)  & Maryetta 22.  The entire family is shown born in OH, except The Mother Eisabeth who says born in Pennsylvania.  By 1880 (census Pg.198) same location, George, age 35 (should be 37 or 38 if ours) is shown as the head of household living with 2 sisters (says sister, not wife for both) Margaret E. 40 & Mary E. 30 (both have dropped 3 & 2 yrs. since the last census! Also John age 46, who was with the family in 1870 is living on his own 2 houses away from George with wife Abigal age 35 & their son Lewis D. age 6. There is one major difference here however in that all 4 apparent children of Lazarus & Eisabeth show their Father born in Virginia instead of what Lazarus said, in Ohio 10 yrs. previous.  They agree with Mothers report on her birth in Pennsylvania as before.  This could mean that Lazarus was not their real Father?  Regardless of all this, I doubt that this is really our George Walter Hartley, mainly because on both of those census' George should have been with wife Margaret by the 1870 census and should have been with she & several children by the 1880 census, none of whom are shown.  I suppose it is possible that George lived elsewhere without getting on the census with his new family, but somehow got put on with his parents first then only with his 2 sisters.  But why would he not be found with his wife?

My only reason for believing Geo. W. was born in Montgomery Co, is because that is what Virginia Hartley wrote me in 1991.  I have called her and asked for as many resources she can send.

There were no HARTLEY's listed as marriages in early OH in Montgomery Co, I did find 3 likely marriages for Georges' parents in Butler Co, however:

1) Joseph HARTLEY m.Elizabeth LARESON 11-7-1822 = 20 yrs. before his b.

2) John HARTLEY m.Rachel PATTON  2-12-1829 = 13 yrs. before his b.

3) John HARTLEY m. Eliza PATTER  3-29-1832 = 10 yrs. before his b.

I would assume if one of these couples were his parents that #3 is most likely and that #2 & #3 Fathers may be the same person?  Will go back to the census' for 1850?

Also I found 2 George HARTLEY men in 1880 OH census at

living @ Wilkesville Twp.Pg 182D

I have found #3 John Hartley above on the 1850 census age 44, married to Eliza age 35.  I still suspect that #2 & #3 are equivalent men, with the first wife Rachel, probably dying in child birth?  This is more supported now with the 1850 census as this couples' oldest child listed is James B. age 20, inferring he was born between the marriages shown at the top (1829 & 1832),  The next child is Elizabeth who is age 17, putting her being born 1 year after the 1932 marriage date (a perfect fit).  I suspect the only one that was Rachel's son was James.  It is tempting to suspect John & Eliza are George's parents, however their nearest child in age is 10, making him 2 years older than George Walter HARTLEY.  We have no understanding as to why George wasn't living with them if he was their (should be 8 yrs old then) son.  Interesting that on that census there is another boy shown living with them.  I cannot tell whether his middle name is Clarkson or his last name is Clarkson.  I think there is a ditto mark out to the side, implying his middle name is Clarkson, so I have listed him that way here, at age 5.

Also interesting at that home is listed William HARTLEY age 42 at the bottom of the list under the children.  I presume this is John's Brother.

The complete family in 1850 was all born in OH: John HARTLEY 44 farmer, Eliza 35, James B. 20, Elizabeth 17, Augustus 14, Newton 11, John L.10, Lewis Clarkson (a historically creative name I would say) 5, & Wm. 42 - it is possible this William is our George's father.

On the 1880 census same County, Butler, town of Middletown, page 103, there is William HARTLEY fits exact age 72 as one above listed as a brick mason, living with his own wife, Elizabeth 61 and  William P. 18 Josiah (K.or R.) 15, and Edgar M. 7 (Edgar is probably not their real son, as there is an illegible word beside son, and he was born in Kansas, the other children born in Ohio.  So apparently Wm. really was single when living with John & family in 1850, as Wm.s family is so young for his age;  although I think that nearly confirms it is the same William as with John, it doesn't tell us his exact relation to John, nor does it clue us in to either one of them being related to our Geo. W.

William does list his birth state as Ohio, and his Father's in North Carolina, & Mother in Pennsylvania.  Wm.'s wife, Elizabeth shows born in Indiana, and both of her parents from Ohio.   The William living with John above also stated he was born in OH - as did John.

To further complicate matters, there are 2 HARTLEY children each living with Non-Hartley parents in Madison Twp. in Sept. 1850 census, page 339:

one, Orlando HARTLEY age 13, is not on the census index, and I discovered him only because he was on the same page (Next door) to Hester A. HARTLEY age 10.  Hester is living with Christian SITES (I believe, although is hard to read), and his wife Sarah, and their children William 6, Margaret 3, & Jacob 1.   Orlando age 13, is shown living with William KERR (also hard to read), his wife also Sarah, and their only child, Franklin age 1.

Both Orlando & Hester show the same birth State, and different than the people in whose homes they are living; however unfortunately I can't read the census takers writing to tell which state, Poss VA, IA?

Because of this, I came to wonder if these children were sibilngs of George W. and that they were all orphaned - I have looked through the entire township census for George in 1850, but could not find him.

Land Plate from 1893 shows George owning land just WNW of Mattoon.  So this confirms the latest date he could have made the move.  I found a very dissapointing obituary for him in the Sept. 17, 1897 Mattoon Newspaper which shows nothing at all of significance, and there is NO death cert. at the courthouse in Charleston.  Apparently Illinois did not require them until 1916.  Margaret's obit. does help some in that it says they moved from Ohio about 6 years before his death (1891?)

Descendants of George has passed on information that George died in Mattoon of Typhoid Fever.

It would appear that Geo. & Marg. lived in/near Paris, Illinois (Edgar Co.) during the 1880s, and probably early 1890s, since some of the children listed as born circa 1881-90 were born there instead of in OH.

AUG.1997:  I visited the Edgar Co, Library & Courthouse (Co.Clerk). There I discovered George Walter Hartley on the 1880 census in Grandview Twp.(Twp. just SW of Paris) listed as a Farmer:

George age 38, Margaret 33, Elmer 12, Garrett 10, Wm. 8, Anna 6, Harry 4 & Geo. 2.  Interestingly all Birthplaces are shown as OH, including George's & Margaret's 4 parents!  One interesting finding on Birth listings in the Co. Clerk's office I could only find one of their children born in the County, that was John Benjamin in 1881, which shows George Walter born @ Miami County, not Montgomery Co, OH!   George's Pension papers say he was born in Montgomery, OH.

Virginia Hartley says George had a sister, also named Martha with middle initial "J", who married George Shearer (or Sherer).  I have not done sufficient search for this person, but I am hoping a later search for her obituary might help us.

I've found on an IGI CD-ROM a George HARTLEY, born April 12, 1844, Elk Mm.  Preble Co, OH.  His parents were Norton Hartley & Deborah Jones.  This listing was apparently through an LDS record with source # 1621541.

I have just re-discovered this George Hartley (no middle initial), born in Elk Twp or the town of Elk in Preble Co, OH, April 12, 1844.  His Father was Norton (not Thornton?) and Mother Deborah Ann JONES.  There are several siblings listed of this George: Jones 1838, Elisabeth (twin) 1838, Thomas C.1840, John 1842, Lucinda (twin of George) 1844, Lydia Hartley 1846, Caroline (twin ?) 1846, William 1848.  Submitters of this information were: Rosa L. Oertli & Richard T. Green, both list addresses of P.O.B.1798 Cardston, Alberta, Canada TOK-OKO.  This is a very odd listing to me, particularly that there are 3 sets of twins (seems highly unlikely), maybe this means that these are baptism dates and the children were baptized 2 at a time.  This baptism theory would work better for it being our George, since the date of birth given here is 2 years later than ours (1944 instead of 42).  However I think it more likely this is a different George, and near the top of this long note was mentioned a George on the 1870 & 1880 Union Co, OH census whose BD would be either 1844 or 45.  I suspect that man is the Geo. s/o Norton... the only thing suggesting this may not be true, is the people living with Geo. of Union Co. in 1870 do not fit and the apparent parents do not fit.  If it turns out Norton & Deborah Ann were our George's parents then I have about 3 more generations backwards for him.

Jan. 28, 1998:  I've just spoken to Mary (Hartley) Drysdale-Murphy, the younger daughter of Charles Clarence Hartley.  She doesn't recall much about her Grandparents George & Margaret, but did mention that her Dad had always said there were no remaining records of his Dad because the Courthouse burned, and records were destroyed by fire.  That may lead us to which County he was born in by finding out which courthouse burned in the 1800s, after 1842.

Jan. 31, 1998:  I spoke to Kay PIERSDORFF in Alberta, Canada.  She has done quite a bit of searching for data on George also, including in the LDS records and couldn't offer new information, but did say that her Father & Uncle used to say they came from PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH !

April 2000.   George stated on his Civil War pension papers he was 5'8" tall, with blue eyes and brown hair.   He also claimed to have been accidently shot by one of his partners in the Left Shoulder at Camp Orchard, KY Sept. 12, 1862.   And that he had two hernias - Right worse than Left, thought to have come on by walking in the swamps of Florida in the C.W.   About the only other thing stated in the Pension is that they were married Sept. 10, 1867 at The Brides home near Middletown, OH.

July 2000-  My best guess as to George's parents - the census of 1850, Madison twp- Butler Co. - shows John Hartley age 42, born in OH - is I believe George's Uncle, brother of William.   Living with John is William age 42,also born in OH -with no wife for him.  Others living with him are John's youngest child, Lewis Clarkson Hartley -whom we know signed up with George for the Civil War.  Also with John are his wife, Eliza, age 35, James B. 20, Elizabeth 17, Augustus 14, a name that looks like either Newton or Kenton age 11 (male), John L. 10, and last is Lewis Clarkson age 5.  So, I believe that Elizabeth (name from Mary Drysdale's handed down note), died before 1850 and William was presumably not capable of taking care of the children.   So, William farmed out George & Martha - and possibly even Hester & Orlando are siblings also ?

Notes for CHARLOTTE * "ANNA" HARTLEY:

Charlotte Ann's Obituary shows she & J.L. were living at 517 B, 22nd St. when the MVA occurred near Bethany, Friday Aug. 12.  She died at St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur, IL just after 12 MN on the 13th.  It verifies she was the only daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George HARTLEY.  Apparently by then, Harry Hartley had moved back to Middletown, OH, even though their Mother died about 26 yrs earlier at Harry's home in Mattoon.  It says her brother Charles was still living out in Ogden, UT.  Pat Flesher tells me that Anna had a CVA several months before that auto accident and had started revovering when she was thrown about 50 feet out of the car after J.L. lost control of the auto when he hit an oil slick at the Dalton city curve.

Notes for EDNA * VIOLA BROTHERTON:

When I first met my wife's Grandmother, Edna in 1976, she was a very frail, small, friendly lady who lived in Decatur, IL. She had been widowed for 14 years by then and seemed quite capable of being independent and seemed to enjoy remaining so.  However, as she became older, and somewhat demented, her only living child, Kenneth (Ann's Uncle) moved her next door to he & his wife in Connecticut.  She continued to deteriorate and needed to be moved to a nursing home.  In her last 5 years she usually did not recognize her family, and had major medical problems, kept alive in an unnatural state by modern medicine.  She died after Kenneth elected to move her to Florida where they were also moving to.   -  Allan Griffith

Notes for CHARLES CLARENCE HARTLEY:

His obituary states he died while visiting 2 nieces in Decatur for several weeks, but had been living in Ogden, Utah for about 42 years at the time of his death.  He was in semi-retirement from his electrical & appliance store in Ogden. It also said he lived in Tuscola as a boy and then moved to Mattoon before going to Utah.   I have been suspicious he was born in 1873 rather than 83, because if it was 83, I would think he would have been born in Paris, IL rather than Middletown, OH.  Mary Drysdale, his Daughter (only child living in 1998) has a chart showing 1883 and Middletown as birth data.
