Descendants of Catherine * BARTH

Generation No. 1

1.  CATHERINE *1 BARTH was born Abt. 1810 in Germany, or Alsasce France, and died in see notes for details.  She married JACOB * STUCKEY.  He was born Abt. 1808 in Germany or Alsasce area of France, and died in Uncertain of correct 1st & middle names -could be Peter.

Notes for CATHERINE * BARTH:

The IGI CD-ROM lists a Katarina BARTHE who was married March 9, 1809 (not born) in Wurtt, Germany, but doesn't say to whom or ANY other details at all.....I suspect this is not our line, at least that it is unlikely to be the Mother of our Peter as she would be approximately 20 years older than what I would suspect Peters Mother to be; However it is the closest name on the database to Peters Mother. (for future reference only!)

The lines below taken from a letter from Rebecca Stuckey commenting first on the Lucy Stuckey we assume was another sibilng of Peter's - but then note her very important discovery about a possible step-parent for Peter - Matthias LEIGH - suggesting that their mother Catherine BARTH was alive, but perhaps ill in 1857.

"And who is Lucy Stuckey? She married Peter Sacriter the same day (Sept. 22, 1857) Henry  married Sophia. I assume it was a double ceremony.  She was listed right under Sophia and Henry in the marriage book at the Probate office. In small print (for Sophia) someone wrote the following: "the court is informed by Matthias LEIGH, that his wife, the mother of the young lady (who is unable to come in person) is willing and concents."  -  Then later Rebecca wrote

"I thought I saw the family name of Leigh living in Hockin Township, Fairfield county, Ohio."

Burial: She may have later married Mathias LEIGH ?

Notes for JACOB * STUCKEY:

Note on Peters' death certificate his father is listed also as Peter STUCKEY, but on his sister Catherine Johns, & his brother Nicholas' death certificate the Father is listed as Jacob STUCKEY?.  I am not certain whether one is the 1st and one the middle name or possibly Peter & Jacob were brothers and both married the same wife at different times.....or more likely one of the death certificates is in error?  It may be that Peter didn't really know the name of his Father?  Since as yet it appears that he came to the U.S. at age 7 years without either parent?  On all the death certs the Mother's name is Catherine BARTH.  The 1900 & 1910, Piatt County, Willow Branch Twp. census lists our Peter's parents as both from Germany, however it is odd that Both Peter & his sister Catherine listed themselves as born in Ohio on the 1910 census.  But they did appropriately (I think) show themselves as well as both parents born in Germany.  See also notes Peters sister Catherine (b.1827).

Children of CATHERINE BARTH and JACOB STUCKEY are:

2.                i.    CATHERINE2 STUCKEY, b. October 25, 1827, Alsace, Germany; to U.S.1835 per 1900 cens; d. May 8, 1918, Monticello,IL; See NOTES.

3.               ii.    LUCY STUCKEY, b. Abt. 1835, speculated -NOT proven to be Peter's sister, see MORE; d. Abt. 1869, 1st name may be spelled Luci.

4.              iii.    PETER * LEWIS STUCKEY, b. February 6, 1836, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany; or Berne,Switz.; d. January 7, 1920, Kenosha, WI; Arr.USA @ age 7(1843); NOTES.

iv.    CHARLOTTE STUCKEY, b. Abt. 1837, Speculated-NOT yet proven to be Peter's Sib-see MORE; d. on the Census of 1850 w. Stephen JOHNS in Columbus.

Notes for CHARLOTTE STUCKEY:

This Charlotte is only speculated to be a sister of Catherine, Peter, Nicholas & Sophia.   Similar to Lucy - both were living in Columbus in 1850.   Lucy was at least a few years older, and living in a boarding house (listed as age 20).  Charlotte is shown in the home of Stephen JOHNS at age 13.   Oddly the wife of Stephen then is Susan - we don't know if that was an error in Catherine Stuckey's name or whether Susan was a first wife, and perhaps Susan died before 1860 and this boarder they were assuming care of may have introduced Stephen to a 2nd wife, Catherine who may have been Charlotte's sister -  for now, I'll list Charlotte as a sibling to put her into the most likely but perhaps presumptous position in our Stuckey family tree.

5.               v.    NICHOLAS STUCKEY, b. April 23, 1840, Germany or Alsasce FR.; see MORE; d. April 25, 1932, Lancaster, OH - Fairfield Co..

6.              vi.    SOPHIA STUCKEY, b. September 9, 1841, Germany / Switzerland or Alsace-Lorraine; d. December 31, 1928, Galesburg, IL; died at daughter Annie Steven's home.

vii.    JACOB STUCKEY, b. 1846, SZ;Speculative as a sib of our 4; details included correct; d. July 10, 1887, Fairfield Co., OH.

Generation No. 2

2.  CATHERINE2 STUCKEY (CATHERINE *1 BARTH) was born October 25, 1827 in Alsace, Germany; to U.S.1835 per 1900 cens, and died May 8, 1918 in Monticello,IL; See NOTES.  She married STEPHEN S. JOHNS in Columbus, OH (census says they had 9 kids).  He was born Abt. 1825 in Ohio; may be JOHN (w/o "S"), and died Abt. 1888 in Columbus, OH; had 1st wife Susan? on 1850 census.

Notes for CATHERINE STUCKEY:

Catherine was shown living with her brother Peter in the 1900 census, and very interestingly says she emigrated to the U.S. in 1835, whereas 2 lines above hers Peter stated what had previously been thought for his emigration date as 1843.  I think they must have truly came over at different times, and apparently were both about 7 years old when they emigrated.  This supports the idea that it is likely Peter came over without parents, since it certainly was true for Catherine, assuming that there parents would not have left Germany, leave Catherine here and go back to have child Peter in Germany later?  Catherine's Obituary from the Monticello paper states she was born in Essex, Germany.  The closest city I can find to Essex in name is Essen.  It is close to the Rhine River, thus making it a likely candidate.

I've found Catherine on the 1860 census at 4th Ward, city of Columbus, OH - living with husband Stephen S. JOHN (no "S" then) whose occupation is shown as a baker.   Their children were:  Caroline age 8, Theodore M. 6, Catharine S. 3, George 1 & Charles 3 months.   Now Stephen is also listed in the 1850 census with a wife Susan, same age as Catherine Stuckey and both list Germany as BP.  They are shown with one child, William age 7 months - he is not on the 1860 census.   ALSO of greater interest is that living with them in 1850 was a 13 y. o. female:  CHARLOTTE   STUCKEY !    My best guess is that either Catherine had Susan as a middle name or the census taker simply wrote down the wrong name and this Susan is actually Peter's older sister, Catherine - not only because of the age of the wife, but also because of the border, Charlotte.   Charlotte is the first suggestion of another sibling for Peter, although we know she didn't live as long as 1918 as she was not among the living on Catherine's obituary (nor on the others).   Of course she could be a cousin, etc.   It is surely not just coincidence that a Stuckey was living with Stephen Johns at that time.    Catherine's obituary names Sophia, Nicholas & Peter as siblings still alive.   Children still listed as alive in 1918 were Kate FISHER, Jennie ALLEN & Charles - ALL living then in Columbus.   Catherine's is buried at the Monticello Cemetery, adjacent to her son, Theodore M. JOHNS - both gravesites are listed as owned by Catherine's other son, Charles JOHN.   This Charles John may be the husband of Sophia's daughter, Sarah - if so then those two 1st cousins married - the allegedly lived in Columbus.   Charles & Sarah's descendants may be the best opportunity to discover more about Peter & his 3 known siblings.   I think finding them should be a high priority - so, I believe finding them on the 1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 census should be helpful.   See Catherine in the 1900 & 1910 census photo in Peter's scrapbook here.

3.  LUCY2 STUCKEY (CATHERINE *1 BARTH) was born Abt. 1835 in speculated -NOT proven to be Peter's sister, see MORE, and died Abt. 1869 in 1st name may be spelled Luci.  She married PETER SACKRITER September 22, 1857 in Fairfield Co, OH - Mg. Book 2, Pg. 156, son of HENRY SACKRITER and MAGDALENA SACKRITER.  He was born October 18, 1835 in Germany; this from "Biog. Rec. of Champaign Co, IL.

Notes for LUCY STUCKEY:

Lucy is one more possible sibling of Peter, Sophia, Catherine & Nicholas' (& Possibly a Charlotte).    We do know that she is listed marrying Peter SACKRITER on the same day that Peter's brother Henry Jr. married Sophia - So it is likely they were sisters marrying brothers - Lucy is 25 y.o. on the 1860 census of Fairfield Co., Greencastle, Bloom Twp.  with husband Peter 23 & son, George 1.  She lists birthplace as France, with Peter as Ohio.   There is a Lucy Stuckey on the 1850 census of City of Columbus in Franklin Co. OH - born in Germany, but her age then is 20 but should be 15 if consistent with the Stuckey girl on the 1860 census, that married Peter Sackriter in 1857 - on that 1850 census, she is then living in a boarding house.   So we don't know if this is the same person.    It should be noted that Peter Sackriter had moved to Piatt Co, by the 1870 census and was then in Goose Creek Twp., living with son, George - and there are two more children by 1870, Lela 8, born in OH & Frank 1 born in IL - but no wife, presumably then, Lucy died about 1 year earlier in 1869, and presumably in IL.  - But there is a 22 y.o. Eliza HOLDEN, listed as a housekeeper.

Notes for PETER SACKRITER:

Most of my information on Peter came from Flether Bishop.   Some of the information came from

!From the Biographical Record of Champaign County, Illinois.  The S.J. Clarke Publishing Company, 1900.  Page 544-545: George Sackrider.  For a place

of its size, Mahomet is blessed with an exceptionally large number of wide-awake, energetic business men, and prominent in the list for the past score of

years has been the subject of this of his sketch, who is a son of Peter Sackrider, who was born in Germany October 18, 1835.

!Believing that America offered better opportunities to an ambitious young man, Peter Sackriter (sic) emigrated to these hospitable shores, and, having

learned the butcher's business in Columbus, Ohio, proceeded to work at that calling there until 1858, when he located in Edgar county, Illinois.  When the

Civil war come on, he enlisted and loyally served in the ranks until peace had been declared.  Returning home he then conducted a meat business in Piatt

county for a few years, also engaging in the manufacture of brick.  At the last-named occupation he later was employed in Mahomet, and at this writing is

living retired at his home in Anderson, Indiana.

!The nativity of George Sackrider took place near Columbus, Ohio, August 2, 1858. He got to manhood in this state, and has had to rely mainly upon his

own efforts in the acquisition of an education.  In fact, he may justly be termed a self-made man, for he has had his own way to make, and has nobly

struggled against the numerous difficulties which confronts one who starts out without means or influence.  In 1878 he joined his father at Mahomet, and for

over ten years was employed in the brick yard here, thoroughly learning he trade.  He became the owner of the plant about 1891, by purchase, and since

then he has greatly increased the capacity of the factory and the superiority of the manufactured article.  From four to five hundred thousand are made here

each year, and there has been a growing demand for the product, which compares favorably with the best grades in the make.  Fairness characterizes all of

our subject's dealing, and he possesses the respect of the entire community.

!On the 24th of December, 1882, Mr George Sackriter (sic) married Fonnie Morse, daughter of John H. And Sarah Ann (Cox) Morse, natives of Ohio and Indiana,

respectively. The former, who was born October 18, 1835, was a son of Henry Morse, one of the pioneers of the Buckeye state, and originally of Canada.

J.H. Morse followed the calling of a carpenter, and was a citizen of Mahomet for many years.  The only child of Mr. and Mrs. Sackriter (sic) is Lloyd, who is

a promising youth, now attending the home schools.  Another son Wilbur, died when five years of age.

!The home of the Sackriter family is a very attractive one, and no pains or expense have been spared in improving the property.  Fine fruit and shade trees

and a well kept lawn add greatly to the beauty of the premises, and everything is kept up in a thrifty manner.  In local elections our subject is independent,

while in national issues he uses his franchise in favor of the nominees of the Prohibition party.  He has never desired public offices, but served for two terms

as a member of the town board.  Fraternally he is an Old Fellow and now holds the office of noble grand in the Mahomet lodge, while in the Modern

Woodmen of America he also holds an official position.  Everything which affects the general prosperity of this community is of deep interest to him, and he

faithfully meets all of the obligations which devolve upon him as a citizen.

Children of LUCY STUCKEY and PETER SACKRITER are:

7.                i.    GEORGE3 SACKRITER, b. August 2, 1858, near Columbus, OH.

                  ii.    LELA SACKRITER, b. 1862.

iii.    FRANK SACKRITER, b. 1869; d. probably died young.

4.  PETER * LEWIS2 STUCKEY (CATHERINE *1 BARTH) was born February 6, 1836 in Alsace-Lorraine, Germany; or Berne,Switz., and died January 7, 1920 in Kenosha, WI; Arr.USA @ age 7(1843); NOTES.  He married JULIA * ANN BURGET September 30, 1858 in Pickaway Co.OH (per marriage lic. Age 16), daughter of JACOB BURGET and ELIZABETH FRYATT.  She was born January 1, 1842 in Circleville, Pickaway Co., Ohio, and died July 16, 1903 in Cisco.

Notes for PETER * LEWIS STUCKEY:

John R. Stuckey, of Bloomington has spoken to Chas. & Ruth Stuckey of Lancaster, OH (Fairfield Co. adjacent to Pickaway Co.) They apparently are descendants of Nick Stuckey, brother of Peter.  Unfortunately they knew nothing of Nick's parents or siblings (they have always heard that Nicholas was an orphan when he came to the U.S. & were unaware of the siblings.  John R. does have a book entitled Cisco, 100th anniversary 1874-1974 which states Peter moved to Cisco from Ashville, OH with his family, but does not give a date-I'll need to check the census records from the Fairfield & Pickaway County, OH census records for 1850, 1860, 1870 to determine more about the migration of the Stuckeys) Ashville is just a few miles North of Circleville, OH also in Pickaway Co. which is immediately West of Fairfield Co. where Lancaster is located.  Peter is shown in the 1880 census but not in the 1870 Piatt co. census.  The Cisco book (I have since obtained) also says that Peter was born in Germany, but migrated from Bern, Switzerland at the age of 7 with his parents, a brother (presumably Nicholas) and 2 sisters (one is Sophia STUCKEY SACKRITER, the other Catherine JOHNS.) Patricia Flesher has told me of a Sacriter relative living in Decatur, IL but she was not certain of the connection.  I would presume then that Sophia Sackriter must have moved to central IL near the same time as her brother Peter and that Harry Sackriter, Sr. (deceased) and his son Harry JR. are descendants of Sophia and whoever her Sackriter husband was.  I have spoken to Harry Sackriter, Jr. who unfortunately knew nothing at all of his ancestors; in fact he did not even know the name of his Grandfather Sacriter!  Apparently there are also Perkins who are similar lineage descendants living in nearby Cerro Gordo, IL., & Milford, IL;  John R.Stuckey has spoken with the Perkins there and plans on meeting with them soon. (Dec 1992); The book HISTORY OF PIATT COUNTY 1883 shows that a Sophia Stuckey married Harry Sackriter in 1857. It also states that Harry moved to Goose Creek Twp, Piatt Co. in 1864 & moved to Monticello in 1876, but no details about Sophia.   I visited the Croninger Cemetary May 7, 1993 and found it with the help of Patricia Flesher. It is on the West side of 100E road about 3 miles due south of Cisco, Their graves are near the center of the Cemetary.  Apparently George Rocky must have moved to Monticello after he left his family in Cisco.  In November 1993 I discovered a reference to Sarah Perkins & Mother Julia Burget on a Mormon CD-ROM in the McClean Co., IL historical society library.  This reference was written by a Mr. Richard A. Perkins of 288 Westmoor Ave.,Newark OH 43055. He gives Julia Burget's BD as 1837 instead of 1842, & Peter's as 1833 but it surely must be the same ones.  On April 29, 1994, I mailed a letter to Mr. Perkins requesting any further info he might have, and his references for the CD-ROM material he contributed.  Further research show this Richard Alex PERKINS is the Grandson or Great-Grandson of Sarah Jane (STUCKEY) PERKINS, which was George Rocky's Sister, but I have received no word from Richard A. Perkins, so I assume he has moved or died, the CD-ROM oddly enough did not list his birthdate....I believe his siblings or children, etc. live in Milford & am trying to contact them.  The census' contradict the earlier dates, so I think their birthdates are correct as listed 1836 & 1842.  Interestingly on both the Piatt county 1900 & 1910 census Peter's widowed sister Catherine JOHNS is shown living with Peter.

Nov 1994 - I've just visited the Monticello Public Library; Numerous sources there, including books on the history of Pickaway Co, OH - since it seems there was a migration of many people from there to Piatt Co. IL for some reason?  History of Franklin & Pickaway Co.(Walnut Twp.) on Page 280 list an Aaron Stuckey building a saw-mill at East Ringgold.  Peter's Obituary in the Jan 15, 1920 Piatt Co. Republican newspaper doesn't help much.  It does show that he died in Kenosha Wisconsin where he had been living with his daughter Mrs. Loton Williams, apparently since 1918 when his sister Catherine Johns died.   The body was shipped back to Cisco where he was buried at the Croninger Cemetary with wife Julia. Incidentally Julia's obituary states she & Peter left Ohio to come to Piatt County in 1864. Peter's death cert. says he was born in Germany (as does the Piatt Co. Census) and that he came to the U.S. as a boy, but doesn't say anything about his ancestors.  One surprise is that it repeatedly shows his middle initial as C. (I suspect an error, since I'm certain his middle name was Lewis).  The 1850 Ohio census shows a Peter Stuckey living in Fulton Co., German Twp.(page 362B) age 42, AND it shows another Peter Stuckey living with him age 14.  That would actually be the right age for our Peter AND Our Peter's death certficate shows his Father as PETER Stuckey, and although the elder Peter in Fulton Co. 1850 was apparently married to a Catherine age 39 (Peter's death cert. showed Mother was Catherine BARTH),  nevertheless the sibs of this younger Peter are not similar to the known siblings of our Peter (Ann 19, Joseph 6, Christian 3, Barbara 2, & Mary 1.)   One would wonder if this family was not an Uncle Peter that our Peter was living with.  I did locate Nicholas (age 19) in the 1860 census living in Farfield Co., (Lancaster) Bloom Twp. Roll 960.  He was then shown rooming with another young male, George Starling, age 18, both listed as Farm Laborers.  Oddly I cannot find Peter anyplace in 1860, Yet I had information that Peter did not migrate to Illinois until 1864.  I should check an 1860 census for Indiana?

Peter & Julia's Marriage license shows married in 1858 in Ohio.

March, 1995: I've finally received the death certificate of Peter Lewis Stuckey.  Surprisingly it gives a different (than sister Catherine JOHN lists as her Father: Jacob) 1st name for his Father: says same as his own name: Peter Stuckey, birthplace for both Peter's and his Mother (all 3) as Germany, but no city or area listed.  If in fact his Father was Peter then the two Peters listed in Fulton County with the right age for Peter Jr. would fit perfectly but his sibs do not fit at all so will need to track down more to determine if in fact that is ours.

The death certificate lists Peter as a farmer and died of "old age (senility), contributory: pneumonia".  Place of death shown as Somers Twp., Kenosha County, WI.  I have 2 obituaries for Catherine Johns, one says she was born in Essex, Germany and one says Alsace, France!....Now there is an ESSEN, Germany near the juncture of the Rhur & Rhine rivers just NorthEast of Dusseldorf, but it is also likely that the Essex was actually intended to be Alsace since they are phonetically similar.

I have gotten a book on interlibrary loan from Quincy IL library titled 30,000 names of immigrants (to Philadelphia), by Prof. I. Daniel Rupp.  this is the same book that shows my ancestor Jacob Persinger, who also apparently came over from the Palatine area of Germany-Switzerland.  This book shows several possible ancestors of Peter: Pg 213, but this book has no immigrations later than 1774, so I doubt these are close relatives of our Peter.

Best known chronology:

1836: Born near France-German-Swiss borders (most likely Germany).

1843: Came to USA, age 7 allegedly with Parents, 1 Brother & 2 Sisters.

1858: Married Julia Ann BURGET in Pickaway County, OH.

1861: 2nd child George Rocky STUCKEY is born

1864: Moved from Ohio to  IL, may not have come to Cisco til 1876 ?

1903: Wife Julia Dies, Julia's Sister, Sarah (DUVALL) living with them.

1904: Sarah DUVALL dies in Cisco, Kathryn JOHNS comes to stay with Peter

1910: Peter & HIS sister Kathryn JOHNS living together in Cisco (census)

1918: Kathryn JOHNS dies @ Cisco, body sent to Ohio for burial

1920: Peter dies at the home of his daughter Mrs. Loton Williams in WI.

Here is the confusing 1850 census of Fulton County, OH - Pg. 362B - that I think is just coincidental but worth noting.  The similarity is so close - age of this Peter Jr. is exactly that of ours - Mother and Father's names exactly as our Peter's children put on his Death Certificate.    But none of these other children fit those we believe are those of our Peter.   Of course it still may be our Peter and his parents - since we can't locate Peter in 1850 anyplace else -and since it clearly seems that Peter came to the U.S. in 1843 - and without his older sister, Catherine - who alleges in census she came to the U.S. in 1835 - we have therefore  assumed it likely the children are broken up to other places since his older sister was - it may be that our Peter's real parents died before 1850 & he was taken in by an Uncle & Aunt - and maybe that is who these are and the other children are mistakenly put in as his sibs instead of cousins.   That also would explain why some of the others put down Jacob as a father, but Peter put down Peter as a father.   Of course, this is all pure speculation w/o more evidence.   One task to pursue would be to try to find these apparent siblings' descendants.   -  There are several so it shouldn't be that difficult.

Notes for JULIA * ANN BURGET:

DID Julia and Peter meet in an orphanage? - that seems to me to be the best explanation for the lack of findings for both of them???

I am reasonably sure that Julia's Father was one of 6 men:  James, Jacob, Joseph, Joshua Jr., John or George BURGET, and that her paternal GF was Joshua Sr. or Henry.

Have not discovered anything definite about ancestors or any other details of Julia;  The book HISTORY OF FRANKLIN & PICKAWAY COUNTIES, OHIO 1880 shows several references to Burgett or Burget, but no Julia's - in fact only one female Burget(t) reference.

The following are listed there: Joshua Burgett, Sr. settled there by 1804 and had the following children: Joshua, Jr., John, Mary Altha, George, Mrs.?.  Another reference in the book says Joshua Sr.settled in Harrison Twp, 1804 & had sons, Joshua, George & Joseph (I don't know then if Joseph=John) More confusing is the finding in the Cerro Gordo history 100 year history pamphlet a statement that Julia's maiden name was Friatt?  I can find plenty of Burgett &  Burget names in Ohio at that time, but not one single Friatt...I wonder if that is her Mother's maiden name, or more likely a simple typographical or other reporting error?  The above Ohio history book goes into some depth about several of these Burget/ts: Jacob BURGET was a surveyor (dates not listed).  Private James BURGET was in the Civil War 12th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company D, mustered into service Nov. 24, 1863.      Henry BURGET came to Pickaway Co. from Hampshire Co. Virginia in 1811, and in 1812 bought land just North of Circleville from a Mr. Denny.  He lived there til 1836 when he moved to  town & soon died.  He had married a Mary Dickson in 1803 - 9 children 4 born in VA, 5 in OH.   By 1883 all children were dead except 2 sons & 1 daugh: James & Washington lived in Illinois & Sarah (BURGETT) SMITH -  Her husband Wm. D. SMITH, a farmer died in 1856 (she lived in Circleville).   There was a widow BURGETT with a son Daniel & 4 daughters all living on Darby Creek.  A Sarah BURGET was the 2nd wife of Andrew R. DUVALL {THIS IS SIGNIFICANT IN THAT JULIA'S OBITUARY (July 23, 1903, The Piatt Co. Republican newspaper) STATES SHE HAD A SURVIVING SISTER, SARAH J. DUVALL., it also says Julia was the youngest of 9 children}  The book states Benjamin lived in Harrison, OH but died in Shadeville, Franklin Co, OH.   BE CAREFUL, from the book it is confusing in that I can't tell with certainty whether Julia's sister was married to Benjamin, Benjamin Jr. or to Benjamin Sr's son Andrew R.  I believe it is saying she was the 2nd wife of Andrew R. DUVALL of Madison, OH.; Also there is listed a John Burget who was on a jury in July 1810. Also there was an Edward Cutler who had a son Enos who had a daughter who married a Mr. Burget of Harrison, OH.   I also have a copy of the death certificate of both Julia Stuckey & Sarah Duvall, neither showing names of parents that early (1903 & 1904)  Also I could not locate an obituary for Sarah Duvall in Monticello; Sarah does have an obit from the Circleville newspaper that shows her body was shipped back to Reber Hill Cem. near Ashville and that she had lived much of her life in the tiny town near there of St. Paul.

Nov.1994: Both the 1880 & 1900 census of Piatt County, IL says Julia's Father was born in Pennsylvania, her mother is listed from Ohio as Julia is also shown from, but the 1900 census shows her Mother from Pennsylvania like her Father (reporting conflict, likely caused by Peter supplying her information one of those times?).   I think her most likely Grand-Father (possibly Father?) was Jacob Burget who is listed in the Pennsylvania census in 1800 in Bedford Co.; 1810 in York Co., PA (Washington Twp) p. 196 of the census; and finally in 1820, back in Bedford Co., PA (St.Clair Twp.) P.039 of the census.  He is listed in the Ohio 1830 census (but no longer in Pennsylvania 1830 census) in Pickaway Co.Washington Twp. p 033 (also there is a John Burget in the same Twp & on same census page, and there are Henry & Thomas Burgett, Dor. Twp census P.118, also in Pickaway Co.)    Then in 1840 (2 years before Julia's birth) there is only 1 Burget or Burgett listed from Pickaway County - that is Jacob (p. 169, Harrison Twp.)  By 1850, the Ohio census shows 5 Burget heads of households residing in Pickaway Co, Circleville Twp.  Jacob W. & Mary on census page 396, another Mary - p.393, Solomon - p.408, & Washington - p.16. I have as yet not gotten any of the actual census', as all these come from the census index books.

December 1994: I have located Julia A. BURGET in the Ohio 1850 Pickaway County, Harrison Twp. census, Page 047, age 7, living with a William & Jane Duvall ages 34 & 23, resp.; Of further curiosity, within 2 census pages (a few blocks, or less?), there is a 21 year old living as farm helper, named Bartholomew BURGET living with Andrew DUVALL, age 30, and wife Cynthia, age 34 & 3 Duvall children.

I have a copy of Julia'a marriage certificate which seems to imply she had a living Father who authorized the marriage to Peter (since she was 16 y.o. and even then considered a minor), but neither the Parents names nor signatures are on the certificate (I would presume this could have been a step-father or possibly even a brother or brother-in-law posing as the father.)

Unfortunately the Circleville newspaper obituary notice for Sarah (BURGET) DUVALL did not mention anything about her ancestors or descendants, it only contributed the name of her husband, Andrew DUVALL - and two step-sons, Richard Duvall & Victor.

Also of possible interest is the marriage on Aug. 23, 1846 of Wm.R.DUVALL to Jane BURGET - this is most important because these two are shown as the householders that OUR Julia was living with in 1850! (could this be another sister of Julia or possibly was Jane an Aunt?  And there is a marriage of James BURGET  and Sarah Ann CUTLER on Oct. 11, 1847...possibly Julia's older brother ?..( I doubt James would be a father although his age in 1850 could allow that if it weren't for the statement that Julia was the youngest of 9 children), they are shown with son Enos BURGET on the same 1850 census page 047 as Julia , Jane & Wm.R.(3 doors away).  Therefore I suspect that James, Sarah Jane, & Julia were all sibs, and that both parents were likely dead by the time she was 7 years old.(recall she was the youngest of 9 children.)  Recall the mention of a widow Burget living with her one son, Daniel & 4 daughters on Darby Creek .... one more sister to find, if that is her family?  However if the name Daniel is correct, and there was only one son then obviously that is not the correct family, since we are conjecturing her brother was the James who lived near her.   (Could have been James Daniel Burget ?)

In October 2000,  A real breakthrough arrived in an Email from another Burget researcher who as yet has not connected to ours, but supplied me with 3 Burget marriages in the time frame of ours and all in Pickaway Co, OH -  One of these showed a Jacob Burget marrying Elizabeth FRYATT !! -  This is the 3rd reference to a FRIATT sounding name - but the only one that makes me feel confident to connect them to ours..  More evidence is needed to be more comfortable with the presumption.   The other source was a Cerro Gordo Centennial booklet that had a short biography of Sarah & Alexander Perkins.   In it it referred to her Father, Peter Stuckey marrying Julia FRIATT.    Until now, We could never put anything meaningful to that Fryatt name except it was probably an error.    There was one other reference to that name in a History or Pickaway Co, OH text saying that a FRIATT man entered land - didn't make a lot of sense, but does now lend more credence to the Friatt name being in early Pickaway Co... presumably that man is likely Elizabeth FRIATT's brother or Father, and Julia Ann's Grandfather or Uncle.    By The way - BURGET(T) name whether spelled with one or two "T"s allegedly stems from the European name of BURGHARDT - and furthermore just in Pickaway County, I see it spelled  Jacob BURGAT in 1830,   Henry BUGET in 1830, etc.

5.  NICHOLAS2 STUCKEY (CATHERINE *1 BARTH) was born April 23, 1840 in Germany or Alsasce FR.; see MORE, and died April 25, 1932 in Lancaster, OH - Fairfield Co..  He married AFFIE E. WHITZEL March 1866, daughter of ZEPHANIA WHITZEL and JANE BEATTY.  She was born June 12, 1847 in aka as Effie- is it poss.1st child fr.Leah WOODWARD, and died October 20, 1921 in could be 1927?.

Notes for NICHOLAS STUCKEY:

John Robert Stuckey has made 2 trips to visit Nicholas' descendants Charles Stuckey (wife Ruth Schneider).  Charles' Father Zephaniah was Nicholas' Son, thus Charles is Nicholas' Grandson.  Charles was born in 1911, and says he remembers his Grandfather Nicholas, but they insist that Nicholas never spoke of a brother and that Nicholas always said he was an orphan, born in Germany, and they always felt he never had relatives in the U.S.  Ruth Stuckey visited the cemetary and told me it said he was born in 1840 instead of 1842 as the 1860 census would indicate.  In August 1995 I finally got the death Certificate for Nicholas showing the Jacob & Catherine parents as does his sister Catherine JOHNS' d. certificate (although a different Fathers name from Peters d. certificate shows.  I would therefore guess the more likely Fathers name to be Jacob, however it would be possible that Peter was not a full brother to Catherine & Nicholas, or that one may be a middle name he used more than the first?  There is by the way a Nicholas STUCKEY born in Baden, Germany in 1842 on the Germany IGI CD-ROM but no parents or other details are given but the year & location. My atlas shows a Baden SW of Hamburg in the Northern part of former West Germany....but a more likely spot, due to its proximity to the Alsace-Lorraine/Rhine area also in former West Germany, Baden-Baden just NE across the Rhine from Strasbourg, France.

Word from Nicholas' descendants show he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen March 31, 1877.    He mainly worked as a farmer but in later years held a post as County Commissioner in Fairfield Co, OH.    His wife's name is variously shown as Affy, Effie & Affie.   The 1920 census shows he believed he immigrated in 1843.

In the Lancaster courthouse there is a reference to a Nicholas Stuckey & Leah WOODWARD having a child, Augustus Sept. 20, 1869.   I wonder if Effies marriage date is correct and if Nicholas had an earlier wife ?  Also at that County Courthouse there is a reference perhaps quite significant showing the death of Jacob STUCKEY at age 40, born in Switzerland, died at Lancaster.    Could this be another sibling of the 4  we know of as is Lucy & Charlotte also possible siblings but who likely died to early to have shown up in records such as the siblings obits?

6.  SOPHIA2 STUCKEY (CATHERINE *1 BARTH) was born September 9, 1841 in Germany / Switzerland or Alsace-Lorraine, and died December 31, 1928 in Galesburg, IL; died at daughter Annie Steven's home.  She married HENRY SACKRITER, JR. September 22, 1857 in Fairfield Co, Ohio - Mg.Book 2, Pg. 156, son of HENRY SACKRITER and MAGDALENA SACKRITER.  He was born December 10, 1832 in Dans Essel, Germany; came to IL 1864;or Dunfessel?, and died October 10, 1919 in Monticello, IL.

Notes for SOPHIA STUCKEY:

Her obituary claims they moved to IL in 1864 then in 1876 to Monticello, IL (although that is not true because they are on the Monticello township census of 1870 - I've not found out where (or if anywhere else) they were in Illinois first.   She died at the home of her Daughter, Mrs. C. M. STEVENS in Galesburg.   Interesting that the Obit says she was born 1841 - but then says she came to the U.S. at age 5 years.   This would suggest that Catherine came in 1835, Peter & Nicholas 1843 & Sophia 1846 !   They owned and operated a hotel / boarding home in Monticello til 1916, then 3 years later Henry died in 1919.     The 1st evidence I have as yet for Henry & Sophia - in the 1860 census of Fairfield Co, OH - Bloom Twp.  - cesus Pg. 146/25, Post Office Greencastle.  This shows Henry, age 27, a farmer, listed BP France, then Sophia age 18, Wm. H. age 1year, and living with them was Madeline Sackriter who I presume to be Henry's widowed Mother - she is shown then as age 54, also from France.

Notes for GEORGE * ROCKY STUCKEY:

3 locations of Birthplace for George Rocky:  Robert Stuckey of Bloomington, IL says in Lancaster, OH (which is in Fairfield Co), Julia (Stuckey) Calhoun writes in her family record book that he was born in Pennsylvania (her exact writing is "Penna.").  Yet another source which I obtained initially but for some reason have not recorded the source is in Pickaway County, OH, which is the county immediately West of Fairfield Co. (Lancaster, OH).  This needs to be pinned down in order to study the Stuckey line further!  I wonder if the Lancaster may have actually been Lancaster, PA?  Another possible date of birth is Sept 2 instead of 20th.

It should be noted that there is a very nice photo on Page 207 of Glenna Mosgrove's book from Musgrave to Mosgrove, on which I believe she has erroneously labled the people of.  She says the little girl sitting is Emma Mosgrove & claims the adults are Emma's parents, but I believe that the little girl sitting instead is Emma's child Julia Ann Stuckey and the adult parents are George Rocky Stuckey & Emma Mosgrove Stuckey.

Notes for JULIA * ANN STUCKEY:

I remember Julia, my Wife Ann Skinner's Maternal Grandmother very well, as we had been married 10 years when Julia died at age 94.  Her 2nd husband Ben had died just 15 months before she died.  I knew Ben well, but I never met her 1st husband, Richard Calhoun, as my wife Ann was only

14 when her maternal GrandFather died of Leukemia.  Julia was a very intelligent, consientious & sweet old lady.  She had a very good sense of humor, played piano and loved to laugh.  In her last few years as her 2nd husband was weakening from Metastatic prostate cancer, she became despondent and remained depressed in my opinion for the rest of her life. - MAG

Notes for RICHARD * BUTLER CALHOUN:

Dick worked as an advertising manager for the Bloomington Pantagraph & the Decatur Herald and later the superintendent of the service dept. of the Decatur Review (his daughter Patricia does not believe the latter...about the Review to be true). In 1919 he owned the Calhoun Music Shop.  In 1937 he became the the head of the farm replacement for the Illinois State Employment Service of the Illinois Dept. of Labor.  He continued this work until his death June 19, 1963.

His hobby was carving and fashioning miniature furniture.  He married Julia Ann Stuckey in 1913.  She was always a lovely homemaker, wife and mother.  She gave her loveable attractive self to her family...their two daughters Suzanne & Patricia.  Ann also did church work and Red Cross work.  See Notes on her also.
