Notes for JAMES ALGEMIN (4) * DERTHICK:

Considerable information in the book "Derthicks & related Derricks" by Jack T. Spencer & ? Goodpasture.   They say both James Algemin & Huldah are buried @ Hillside Cemetary in Shalersville, (Portage Co.) OH.

We cannot yet determine Huldah's family name or her origins.  There is a good photo of James 4 in the book on page 133. Jack Spencer says James 4 has a vandalized tombstone but Huldah's is still present. Edith Spencer thinks that Huldah's maiden name is either Bell or Wright whose family lived next to the border of MA & CT. and she says the family is listed in both state records and had a daughter named Huldah but no details about her to make certain of the identity.

Notes for RODOLPHUS * C. DERTHICK:

Rodolphus C. Derthick is discussed at length in the genealogy book:

DERTCHICKS & RELATED DERRICKS  by Spencer & Goodpasture.    Mail correspondence to: Jack T. Spencer, 1303 Azalea Lane, DeKalb, IL 60115.  Unfortunately there are several divergences from information I had previously; but I am certain that this is the same person due to names of his siblings & their locations are equivalent in most respects making too much of a coincidence to not actually be the same person.    See daughter Blanche's scrapbook for a scan of a paper Blanche must have written listing her Derthick ancestry.

Sept.1992: Mr. Spencer mailed me several very interesting papers about the Derthicks including Civil war material & pension papers.  Apparently he suffered a Major head trauma on July 22, 1964 at NickO Jack Creek, GA which hospitalized him for several months.  On other papers he mentions marriage to Nancy Howe (spelled various ways: Howe, Howell, Howard, HOWER ?) and says from that marriage that he had one daughter who was stillborn and one who was still alive (on marriage records in 1880)

The Iowa State Dept. of History states he is buried in Pine Hill Cem., Saylor Township, Polk County, IA, wife then Elizabeth (HOUSE) she died in 1909 also in Polk Co.

Page 386 of the Derthick book states: He, like his older brothers James & Corydon, became a Cooper (Barrel maker). His first marriage is listed as Nancy House but this is obviously a typo error since that is the same last name as his 3rd wife, and on Page 140 the author lists her name as Howell; Our records show her name was HOWER.  It goes on to say that there were no surviving children from that 1st marriage (but we know better in the birth of Blanche), and this may have been a factor in Rodolphus' entry in the military service Dec. 23, 1863 at Lyons, Iowa.  It tells about his next 2 marriages.  A letter written by his Step-daughter suggests he actually first enlisted earlier: "Father said that he went to Wheeling Virginia(WV) in 1855 and stayed there til 1861. "A nigger and him swam the Ohio at Wheeling and went and enlisted".  "The rebels had guards all on the Virginia side and to get away in the dark he passed through Ohio and went and enlisted at a place called Lacon and was attached to Genl. Herbert's Brigade".  He served one year in that. He came to Iowa and enlisted in the Iowa Crocker Brigade.  He was under Genl. McPherson and in all the battles from Grand Gulf and ended up at Greensboro, NC with the surrender of Gen. Johnson. Ever since the close of the war he has lived within 20 or 25 miles of Des Moines."  The author of the book adds that the documents on file in the Natl. Archives reveal only his service after he enlisted in Iowa in 1863.  Earlier history mentioned in the book shows  It appears that Rodolphus left home (Portage Co.OH) in 1855, which was the year his Father died and sought employment at Wheeling, WV.   At the outbreak of the CWar, he found himself in Confederate Territory and was forced to swim the Ohio River to escape to the Yankee side.   He served a year in General Herbert's Brigade, but for some reason this period doesn't show on his war record.   When Rodolphus enlisted in 1863 with Co. A, 16th Iowa Infantry, he was described as 6 Ft. tall, with Gray hair and Hazel eyes.   He was 37 yrs old - much older than most of his peer recruits.    The book explains, Rodolphus' military action indicates he saw considerable action in 1864 & 65 including the sieges of Kenesaw Mtn., Atlanta & Vicksburg.   Hower his active service was interrupted several months by an exploding shell on 20 (or 22) of July 1864.   The shell fragment struck him on the back of his head and he was hospitalized from July 1864 to February 1865.   Later entries on the record indicate he "sustained permanent injury, deafness, and mental depression".   The exact location of his injury was listed variously as "near Atlanta", or at "Nickajack Creek" in Georgia.    He was mustered out of the service at Louisville, KY July 19, 1865.   It appears he returned immediately to Iowa since the pension records show he lived in Clinton Co, IA to 1866, Dallas Co, to 1877 & Polk Co, IA after 1877.

Notes for NANCY * LOUISE HOWER:

Her obituary in the Feb 25, 1897 Clinton Register weekly Newspaper Read:

"Mrs. Nancy Eatherton died early Tuesday A.M. @ her home on E. Washington St., aged 64 Yr., 4 Mo. & 21 Days.  Her husband, P. H. Eatherton, died 9 years ago in this city. Her children were Mrs. W.F. Calhoun, of Decatur, and Mrs. Walter Harris, of Clinton. She had been afflicted with diabetes, but was not considered in danger until 3 weeks ago. Funeral services were held @ the M.E. Church yesterday conducted by the pastor.  Interment in Woodlawn cemetary."   Also I cannot find any Wadsworth, OH.

The obituary of her daughter Blanche Calhoun states she arrived in Abington, IL in March 1860 with both parents (Rudolphus & Nancy) and later moved to Seneca, IL.; another source says she arrived with Mother only (suggesting the loss of father) prior to moving to IL?

I have taken Photos of the Gravesite next to Mr.P. Eatherton.  The stones appear much newer than 1897, so I am trying to find which family member placed them.  Pat Flesher seems to not know who is responsible, but she recalls visiting the grave as a child.  I suspect the children of Mr. Eatherton may be those most knowledgeable but I have not found any of them in the area.  Note Mrs. Walter Harris (Julia Foster Drake)  mentioned as her other child above was from Nancy's 2nd husband Benjamin Drake.

See notes from Jack Spencer's book "Derthicks & related Derricks" for information on Rodulphus Derthick, and also papers Mr. Spencer mailed me.

Dec, 1994.  I have obtained the 1850 census from Summit Co.OH, which is Akron, OH.  It shows Nancy, age 17 living in a boarding house apparently working for room (& board) owned by some factory (name I cannot read..looks like Perteiars Factory. says she was born in Ohio, Parents not shown.  The same year, her parents and younger sibs are shown on the Medina Co. Sharon Twp. OH census: George & Barbary (clearly shows a "y" at the end) both age 44 and from Pennsylvania, Pepe (?) 17, Solomon 14, Maria 11, Sophia 8, Geo. 7, Margaret 5, & Irene 1.  This list compared to the old list written prior to Richard B. Calhoun is very similar, but there are some names different.  Interesting to note that the only children born in Ohio were the older ones Pepe & Nancy (I question that Pepe was not a servant or hired hand probably rather than a child of theirs), and that all the other children were listed as born in Pennsylvania.  So I assume that unless Nancy was adopted that George must have moved first from PA to OH, back to PA and again back to OH by 1850. From the ages of the children it would appear that they lived in OH around 1833 but in PA between 1836 to 1849.

I found the only known photo of her in Pat Flesher's basement, on a card, the back of which said: "Grandma Etherton (w/o "a").  Unfortunatly I must admit I cannot be sure this is Nancy however, as it is possible it could be Mr. Etherton's first wife?  There is no actual name on the back. It also says in pencil: "i thik she looks like her Father don't you. This is after she had her hair cut."  What probably makes it more likely to be Nancy is 1.found in Pat's basement, which I assume handed down by Blanche 2.)Photo company was City Gallery, Jenkinson Bros., Seneca, ILL

1832 - Born Oct. 2, in Ohio - either Mansfield or Massillon

1850 - Oct. 29th married Rodolphus DERTHICK at Wadsworth, Medina Co, OH

1852 - Feb. 16, only known child of that marriage = Blanche

1860 - Arrived to Abington, Illinois in March 1860 - uncertain whether Blanche came to Illinois at age 8 with mother only or both parents?

1861-64  - We know that Rodolphus was in the Civil War, but don't know if he was still married to Nancy then. - he allegedly enlisted in 1863 from Lyons, Iowa -

but one story is that he was in Wheeling West VA (then still VA) from 1855-1861 and 1st enlisted in 1861 from there.  - He was injured in 1864 -

If the West VA story is true, then it is unlikely Nancy & He were still married when Nancy & Blanche came to Illinois.

1864 - Nov. 3 - married Benjamin F. DRAKE  @ LaSalle Co, Illinois - marriage record Vol. C, Lic# 3001 - Blanche was 12 years old when mother md. 2nd husb.

1869 - 1st daughter, Blanche married an apprentice Dentist,  Wm. F. CALHOUN in LaSalle Co, IL -also Nancy's 2nd daughter, Julia Foster DRAKE was born.

1870 - Census - LaSalle, Co, IL- Allen Twp. -Roll 243, Page 024A w. Benjamin and an 8 year old daughter from his 1st marriage looks like Lucinda or Larinda?

1875 - Benjamin Drake died April 17th, at or near Farmers City, IL - Blanche had been married to William Calhoun 6 years by then.

1879 - Nov. 18 - married 3rd and last husband Philip H. EATHERTON at Clinton, Blanche was then 24 years old then, nancy was 47 yrs. old.

1888 - Philip died April 16th at Clinton IL (DeWitt Co), Nancy is then 55 when her 3rd husband died.

1891 - her 2nd daughter, Julia Foster DRAKE  marries  Walter G. HARRIS on Dec. 24, 1891 at DeWitt Co, IL.

1897 - Feb. 20, Nancy dies at Clinton at age 64 of diabetes - living on East Washington St.,

1906 - 1st husband Rodolphus (Blanche's Father) dies in Iowa at age 80.

Notes for WILLIAM * F. CALHOUN:

He joined the Army @ age 17, enlisting in Company H, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry in Aug.13, 1862 from Saville Twp. and mustered out May 25, 1863.  He was in the Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, South Mountain, Fredricksburg & Chancellorsville.  In 1864 he rejoined in the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry, & was made orderly Sergeant of Company K & finished the Civil War in that postion in battles @ Winchester, Cedar Creek, Fisher's Hill, Tom Brook, Waynesboro, Five Forks, Sailors Creek & Appomattox (much of his 2nd time was under General Sheridan's command). He was mustered out at Philadelphia, PA.   He left PA after the war, coming to IL in October 1865, 1st settling in LaSalle Co.  He studied dentistry & practiced in Seneca where he first practiced dentistry in 1867, & later Farmers City & Clinton, IL.  He retired from dentistry in 1889 when he came to Decatur and went into the newspaper business starting the Decatur Dispatch which later merged with the Herald. In 1897 he was appointed Postmaster of Decatur.   Aunt Sue Morris insists that she has always heard that his actual middle name is Edward but when he went into the Civil War they mistakenly put the initial F. instead of E. & he did not argue with them (possibly in order to maintain his pension status?) At any rate I could not verify this.    Another source, claimed his middle name is Francis, which fits the middle initial we've always known.   That seemed fine until a descendant of Wm's brother Winfield Scott (Carrie Calhoun Bird) has done research that showed his baptismal records reads his middle name as KINER (for his Mother) !  This certainly could make sense since he was the first born son - She always said that his initial was given as "K" in early census records - sure enough both the 1850 & 1860 census records show him as Wm. K. - I can't find him on the 1870 census of IL, but will keep looking.   My best guess is that his middle name was Kiner and that when he followed his two Uncle Kiner's here to LaSalle Co, IL, that there was some family feud or some disgruntlement over what an Uncle did, and he no longer wanted to use the Kiner name - just a hypothesis that will be hard to prove.   Only thing wrong with that theory is that his Civil War records show him as middle initial "F" - so, he must have changed his middle name between 1860 & 62.  There still may have been some bit of long distance battle between the Kiners living in Illinois and Catherine & her children.   Maybe she went to Illinois to settle some difference with them - such as her father's will - Jacob Kiner died Nov. 1861 - just before William enlisted.

There is a book titled History of Dewitt Co that states Wm F. came to Illinois in 1865, initially to Ottawa, IL then it claims he married Blanche near Dwight, IL.  Then went came to Dewitt Co, IL, specifically to Farmers City in 1870 as a Dentist.  He was also the Mayor of Farmer City for a period.    By 1880 he was in the city of Clinton, IL .

CENSUS:

1840 - Father shown in Perry Co.

1844 - born Nov. 21st - another record shows Dec. 21st ?

1850 - 6 years old on the Sept. 1830 census, page 371, Madison Twp. name shown as William K. and shows all his family born in Perry Co.

1858 - Father dies, June 6th.

1860:  15 years old, living with widowed mother & 4 younger siblings on census page 50, Perry Co. - Jackson Twp. - name then shown as William K. - image is in the scrapbook here under their mother, Catherine as is 1850 census.

1861-65 - in Civil War with two enlistments.

1865/6 - believed moved to Illinois with widowed mother and siblings

1867 - alleges practiced dentistry by then- I suspect it means he began studies then.

1869 - married Blanche, August 18th - allegedly near Dwight, IL - I don't have a copy of application or license.

1870 -??- need to look in Seneca, Dwight & Ottawa - he is not yet in Farmer's City by my searching the microfilm - it is likely he might be living with a dentist he was apprenticing with in 1870?

1873/4 - he was Mayor of Farmer City- this is documented in town records.

1880- 36 y.o.- Dewitt Co, Town of Clinton, page 126B - living with Blanche, age 28, Maud 10, & Nellie 7 - name then shown as W.F. Calhoun - listed as a dentist then.

1897 - Appointed Postmaster General of Decatur, IL

I remember Julia, my Wife Ann Skinner's Maternal Grandmother very well, as we had been married 10 years when Julia died at age 94.  Her 2nd husband Ben had died just 15 months before she died.  I knew Ben well, but I never met her 1st husband, Richard Calhoun, as my wife Ann was only

14 when her maternal GrandFather died of Leukemia.  Julia was a very intelligent, consientious & sweet old lady.  She had a very good sense of humor, played piano and loved to laugh.  In her last few years as her 2nd husband was weakening from Metastatic prostate cancer, she became despondent and remained depressed in my opinion for the rest of her life. - MAG
