Descendants of Matthew * McCAMMON
Generation No. 1
1. MATTHEW *2 MCCAMMON (UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born
February 23, 1757 in County Antrim, Ireland, and died October 10, 1841 in
Buried on"Church" Farm,Haddon Twp,Sullivan. He married MARY * DOUGLAS in May have married
Martha TRIMBLE or GALEY. She was born
Abt. 1760 in Ireland (or poss. Scotland?)-1st name is not well documented, and
died in This may be Martha (or Mary is 1st wife?).
Notes for MATTHEW * MCCAMMON:
Matthew McCammon was born 1757 in County
Antrim, Ireland. drafted at age 22 into
the South Carolina Militia in the Camden Dist. was under Capt. Knox' Company,
Col.E. Keshaw's South Carolina Regiment in 1779, and in 1780 under command of Henry Bishop &
later in 1780 with Col. Wade Hampton. Still later he served with South Carolina
Troops under Major Bleauford. Pension
claim: S 17578 was allowed Aug.13, 1832 in Sullivan Co, IN.
Matthew shows up on the July 23, 1784 tax
list for Fayette Co., KY. Then on the Aug.29, 1800 Kentucky census in Jessamine
Co., KY. By 1810 census in Shelby Co.,
KY. In 1820 he was in Sullivan Co., IN.,
probably moved there in 1816, as there is a land entry there dated Oct. 4,
1816.
By 1840 he was shown
on a census of Revolutionary War Veterans living in the home of Edward Neal. He
died at the home of his daughter Gennie Neal near Paxton, IN. I have two dates
of death for him: Aug. 6, 1841 &
Oct. 10, 1841.
I have received email
from a McCammon publisher & writer, Glynn McCalman: 1121 Lee Circle,
Edinburg, Texas 78539. He gave me the 4
brothers listed here of Matthew. He also
says that Matthew was living next door to a William Neal in 1789 @ Fayette Co,
KY was Wm. Neal. He moved to Jessamine
Co., KY by 1793, and on to Shelby Co. by 1803, and arrived to Sullivan Co, IN
circa 1816. He also mentions that
Matthew may have also married Martha TRIMBLE?.... But Geo. McCAMMON has
Matthew's wife a Martha GALEY! .... none
of them say Mary DOUGLAS??
The McCammon line probably came to Antrium
Co., Ireland from Scotland during the reign of Queen Mary in the 15th
Century. In Scotland the name was
believed to have been CAMERON. Earlier
these people migrated from Denmark where the name was AMERUND.
Notes for MARY * DOUGLAS:
George McCAMMON does
not mention this wife of Matthew's. He
gives as the only known wife is Martha, and believes her maiden name was
GALEY. Another researcher sent me
Martha's name as TRIMBLE !... the first time I've seen the TRIMBLE name other
than the one who married Wm. COWDEN.
Most of Jane Douglas "Ginney"s descendants however have handed
down that at least HER Mother was Mary DOUGLASS or DOUGLAS. Donn Neal tells me that he believes (although
has NO proof), that Mary DOUGLAS was an earlier wife of Matthews and died in SC
or NC a short time after Jane's birth and he later married Martha GALEY. Unfortunately NONE of us really know much of
anything about ANY of his wives... It seems just as likely to me that his only
wife was Martha DOUGLAS and the GALEY or TRIMBLE name may have been a first
husband's name before marrying Matthew.
Since the GALEY name came only from a male who signed for her marriage
to Matthew does not make Mr. GALEY her Father.
Children of MATTHEW MCCAMMON and MARY DOUGLAS are:

Generation No. 2
2. JANE * "GINNEY" DOUGLAS3 MCCAMMON (MATTHEW *2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born
1785 in North Carolina; or KY see NOTES (BD is questionable), and died July 9,
1871 in Paxton, IN; Neal Cem. Sullivan Co.;or 7-8. She married THOMAS *"ED"WARD NEAL
April 12, 1802 in Jessamine Co, Kentucky (Name on Cert:NEEL). He was born 1763 in Kentucky Or Pennsylvania
?; Prob. 1775-80?, and died September 21, 1846 in Sullivan
Co.IN;Neal-PaxtonCem.(poss.9-2-46.
Notes for JANE * "GINNEY" DOUGLAS MCCAMMON:
Some records say she
was born in 1771, personally I think that was the inability to read the
gravestone, since an age of 100 plus her father Matthew would have been 14
years old when she was born if his b.d. of 1757 is accurate? so 1791 or at the earliest 1781 would be
believable. Plus all the rest of the children where born (known dates from 1796
to 1803) much later than Jane if she was actually born in 1771...so the only
other explanation would be more than one wife for Matthew and/or an earlier
birthdate for him. My first argument above (1791) seems very plausible. Another source a Mr. George W. McCammon has
written Ralph Woodward a letter stating the 1860 census shows her born in KY
and age 80 at that time. They have
concluded B.D. as 1787. The most probable
range of B.D. being 1781 to 1791.
George McCammon
mentions in his first book that Family lore relates that Ginney Neal lived to
be 100 yrs & 4 days. This item he
says appeared in the Sullivan Co. Democrat of 12 July 1871: "Died on Saturday, July 8th, Mrs.
Neal. It seems that the age cannot be
exactly arrived at, but from the best information that can be gathered she must
at least have attained the age of 100 yrs." Tombstone shows: Jane D. Neal, wife of Edward, d.July 9th,
1871 age 100 y.
1850 Sullivan Co
census shows: Jane D. Neal age 63, b.
NC; cens.Pg.220
1860 "
" " : Virginia Neal age 80, b. KY ; cens.Pg.23
1870 "
" " : Jane Neal age 93 retired, b. NC and father
of foreign birth, and living in home of Sarah Anderson, age 69, Sarah b.KY
Regarding the above
census reports. I view the 1850 census
as age 65, not 63 (a little less divergent with the other ages. If we go with the age 65 date in 1850 this
would make the BD=1885. In 1860, the age
of 80 is consistent with BD=1880. In
1870 an age of 93 puts her BD=1777.... i.e. the birthdate kept getting earlier
as her age gets older, thus I would favor a BD of 1885 and Birth state of NC
(since she gave it twice, and KY only once).

KY; I once believed her to be a Shipman ?, and died December 16, 1870 in She
later married Wm. Neal as his 2nd wife.
Notes for WILLIAM * "BILLY" NEAL:
On the 1850 census of
Sullivan Co, Pg.220, Wm. is shown age 41 with Wife Elizabeth 45, just a yr.
before she died, and children Eliza J. 20, Mary A. 18, Thomas 17, William A.
12, Elizabeth 13, John E. 7 & Sarah E. 4.
On the 1860 Sullivan
Co. Hadden Twp. census Wm. was on Page 24 then 53 b. KY & living with a 39
y.o. Charlotte ? Possibly young 2nd
wife, as Elizabeth died in 1851. With
them were kids all b.IN: Wm. A. 21, John
E. 16, Sarah E. 15, James S.? 7, Joshua
5 & Lucinda 3. Also with them were 3
children with the last name BLEDSOE: Wm. J. 15, Robt.M. 13 & John 11. Now I presume that the last 3 NEAL children
were from he & 2nd wife Charlotte, and the 3 BLEDSOES were from Charlotte
& her 1st husband?

Notes for ELIZABETH * COWDEN:
I originally had her
birthdate as Nov 1, 1797, but Geo. McCAMMON has a more probable date of Nov 6,
1806, in KY. Also her death date may be
April 23 instead of 28th. Brenda Brewer
says her BD is 11-1-1797 (she says her tombstone shows died at age 54 yrs 5
months.
2 things wrong with
the 1797 BD, 1.) Parents married in 1802.
2.) presuming Billy's bd of 1809 is accurate, and they were married
about 1828 or 1829, then She would have been 32-33 and he 19-20.. doesn't seem
likely.

17. ELIZABETH *5 NEAL (WILLIAM * "BILLY"4, JANE * "GINNEY" DOUGLAS3 MCCAMMON, MATTHEW *2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born
October 14, 1835 in Sullivan Co. IN; maybe 1836, and died August 16, 1866 in
Sullivan Co.; age 29 y.o.. She married STEPHEN * S. MOORE February
15, 1858 in this is his 1st of 2 marriages, son of WILLIAM MOORE and
ELIZABETH SHIPMAN. He was born June 12,
1832 in Indiana, and died December 13, 1904 in Sullivan Co, Hamilton Twp..
Notes for ELIZABETH * NEAL:
The source of her bd
& dd are primarily her gravestone at the Neal-Paxton Cem.: Elizabeth wife of S.S. Moore . Aug. 16,
1866, 29y. 10m 2d. There is much confusion about her since
Stephen had a 2nd wife, named Elizabeth H. Moore and whom I cannot find the
maiden name of. But that Elizabeth with
middle initial "H" is in the Timmon's cemetery and was 10 yrs. older
than Stephen. We don't know if he had
any chidren with this wife nor do we know when he married the 2nd wife... but
we assume all his children we know of including Louisa whose bd we don't know
was all from this Elizabeth Neal - his first wife who died at only 29 years old
- possibly from childbirth of Louisa ?
To me the greatest confusion and question lies in the fact that the
death date for Stephen's Mother is within 6 days of his 2nd wife. I wonder if this is incorrectly mixing the
two up. But we're confident of the
dates for this first wife, Elizabeth Neal.

Notes for STEPHEN * S. MOORE:
Stephen is on the
Sullivan Co. 1850 census living with his Father Wm. & Mother Elizabeth
& siblings see Notes on his Father.
I have copies of his
Obituary, death certificate (in Sullivan Co. Board of Health - Book R-33, Pg.
28), and he is listed in the Sullivan Co. Death index. His obituary reads: "Dec. 15, 1904,
Thurs. - Sullivan Democrat (newspaper).
Stephen S. Moore died at the home of his sister, 2 1/2 miles east of
town, Wed. morning at 6:00, after an illness of 5 months duration of
dropsy. His funeral took place this,
Thursday morning at 9:00, interment being made in Center Ridge Cemetery. Mr. Moore was between 60 & 70 years of
age and was born in Cass Twp. He was
twice married, both of his wives being dead." His death certificate states he was 72
years old and died in Hamilton Twp. , date of burial, 12-14-1904 and cause of
death listed as Nephritis & No place of burial nor home address was
listed. He is listed on the Sullivan Co,
Aug. 1870 census in Cass Twp. with his 2nd wife - BUT his name is spelled MORSE
there - and so is a good reason why he is not found in the index easily.
Children of ELIZABETH NEAL and
STEPHEN
MOORE are:
i. MARY ELENOR6 MOORE, b.
December 12, 1858, Sullivan Co. IN;
tombstone says 1859; d. February 22, 1933, Sullivan Co. IN; m. PHILIP * (2) B. GRIFFITH,
December 9, 1876, This was Phillip's last (3rd) wife; b. March 22, 1840,
Palestine, IL, Crawford Co.; d. May 7, 1914, Sullivan, IN.
Notes for PHILIP * (2) B. GRIFFITH:
Phillip 2s meanderings
were very confusing, especially so since he is a fairly recent person in the
history, yet I cannot find how it was that he was born in Palestine, IL in
1840, when I have records showing Phillip 1 in Ohio til 1851. William must have wandered further west than
Indiana.
In 1997, I found the
partial answer to this when I discovered the 1840 census for Crawford Co. IL,
Pg. 284. There was Wm. GRIFFITH with 2
males under 5, 1 between 20 & 30 (Wm.), 1 female under 5 (must have died early
as I don't have her) & Rosella wasn't born for another 11 yrs., Also Phil's
Mother Mary was the only other female, 20-30.
Now what tells the story better is that there were 2 MARTIN males living
next door to them: one James, which initially I thought must be Mary's Father,
but he is much too young: shows 1 (He) 20-30, 2 females one<5 & one
15-20? I assume therefore that this is
Mary's Brother. Next to James MARTIN was
an older family MARTIN, but whose 1st name I can't make out... looks like
starts with a D or P?, the head of household being between 40-50, but with
another male in the same age bracket, 3 younger males 5-10, 20-30 & 30-40,
then 4 females: 5-10, 15-20, 30-40 & 40-50.
From my previous notes on the Martin's I cannot figure out which family
this last one is. I suspect the Martin's
migrated North to Marshall, IL sometime later, while Wm. & his wife came
back to Wooster, OH to his Father within the next 10 yrs.

Notes for ISA"BELL"A
* LUCINDA MOORE:
My Father Harold
Griffith recalls Belle in her later years as having a mean disposition which
got worse when she became senile.
However Ralph Woodward recalls her being quite different and he portrays
her as a very kindly woman. It is interesting to note that the photos we have
of her and her older sister Mary Eleanor appear very similar. I have been unable to find a single photo
showing both of them together, so I have often wondered if we are not mixing
them up? Remember that those 2 sisters,
Belle & Mary Eleanor, married Father & son (Philip & Mart).
This paragraph below is
written by Ralph Woodward in an Email to me about my Great-grandmother Belle
Moore Griffith:
"There were two
expressions I remember hearing from Aunt Belle: The Good Lord must have liked poor people --
He made so many of us. And: Poor
people have poor ways
and rich ones mean ways. I was around
her most at the time my Granma Griffith was sick for so long before she died.
I was in 8th grade and
Bob 6th. Aunt Belle came and stayed at
our house and Mom spent every other night helping take care of her Mother. Granma lived
with Aunt Nell and Aunt
Bess and alternated with Mother. A
neighbor, Cecil Alsman, came about 4AM each morning [ Feb or March] and we did
the milking
and fed some, did other
chores while Aunt Belle got breakfast. I
first got a fire going in the cook stove and the heater in the living room
hot. When we
came in for breakfast,
she had a big pan of hot biskets, meat and gravy, and we finished up with
sorghum molases [creaming it first with either real
butter or peanut
butter. Aunt Belle just could not
believe the demand for her biskits. That
bread pan held three big loaves of bread made in it
and there was always a
pan of "yeast starter" on the back of the stove. It took 25 # of flour a week. for the
family."

Notes for ANNA MATILDA GIBBS:
Anna was listed in the
1900 census as a live-in housekeeper for the family of John L. Thompson on
Washington St. in Sullivan, IN. At this
same time her sister Grace, brother James & half-sibs Asa & Clarence
Persinger were still living with Alfred P. Gibbs & Cora (?Elizabeth) in
Sullivan. So one would suspect that Anna
recently moved out of the Gibbs home to earn a living.
