Descendants of Robert * MOORE

Generation No. 1

1.  ROBERT *1 MOORE was born April 20, 1788 in KY - per 1850 census; TN per prior report, and died March 26, 1855 in Sullivan Co. IN; see NOTES - also Scrapbook w. wife.  He married DRUCELLA * MILES July 26, 1812 in Washington  Co, KY, daughter of ISAAC * MILES.  She was born 1785 in KY - per 1850 & 60 census - see scrapbook, and died Aft. 1860 in see NOTES.

Notes for ROBERT * MOORE:

Robert is shown on the 1850, Sullivan, IN Hadden Twp. census on page 229, He was age 61, Farmer born in KY, living just a few doors from his son Wm. Jefferson.  Robert was shown with his wife Rusilla (prob. Drusilla?) age 65 (4 yrs. older than he), also born in KY & daughter Hannah age 26, I believe from IN?  They were living immediately next door to their older son James Moore -b.KY & his wife Sarah- b.TN & kids b.IN: Wm. J., Elias 9, & Elizabeth age 6.

Robert came to Indiana from KY about 1816 and bought land in Sullivan Co. in 1832.   He allegedly brought with him his mother, Nancy Ann Grundy.   Ralph Woodward writes that Robert Moore told his descendants that his father (unnamed) was also the father of Nancy Hanks Lincoln;  and that this Moore was evidently a soldier that was friends with Felix Grundy, son of George Grundy.  Felix later became prominent in KY politics.    Now there are those who have written me that Nancy was the daughter of George GRUNDY, b. 1739 of Bury, Lancaster, England and Elizabeth BERKHAM of Wales.  However Ralph states he studied this Grundy family from a genealogy library in Louisville, KY and it listed 9 children, none of which included a Nancy or an Ann.   The children listed were:  1 daugh. Polly and 8 sons:  Robert, Gardum,  Samuel, Charles, John, George & Felix Grundy.   Whether these really were siblings of Nancy Ann is still to be determined.    For the time being I've listed Elizabeth & George as her parents to offer at least a theoretical start.

June 1999.  I was frustrated that I couldn't find Drucella's death date, exact BD or location of burial, etc.   Robert, son Wm.J & Elizabeth Neal plus Thomas MILES had always been listed in the Chambers Cem. in Northern Jefferson Twp, just south of the Cass Twp. borderline which is 300S road, and just North of the Woodward Cem. which is just South of 350S road, both being just West of Hwy. 159, 3 miles South of Dugger.    I hadn't seen any discussions about this cem. and had never been there, so went for a simple search for the cem.   Much to my surprise the entire area (and much wider around it) where it should have been had been excavated by the Peabody Coal Co.    After much desperation I actually located a man, in Dugger, Bob Smith who told sometime in the 80s they were paid along with a Mr. James Meng from a funeral home in Linton, IN to excavate and transplant the graves by the Coal company !    He then proceeded to tell me that although there were only 7 gravestones (and listed in the cemetery books at the library.)   but there were 12 more bodies discovered in the ground there but without gravestone identifiers.    Some bones were found wrapped in sheets, several without caskets, but none of those unmarked graves with any kind of identifier as to name, date of death, etc.    The graves were all moved to the South-South-East end of the Woodward Cem. just South of 350S.    Robert is clearly marked as MORE with only one "O", but Wm. J. & Elizabeth are shown as MOORE.   Robert's death date is also clearly 1855, not 1865 as G.H. Miller has written, or at least someone transcribed from his notes.

ISTORY OF THE ROBERT MOORE FAMILY -BY GARRETT MILLER 1959

(From correspondence files at Sullivan Library)

Robert Moore, a native of Virginia and central Kentucky, migrated to

southern Indiana about 1815. In 1832 he purchased eighty acres (Government

land) in section fourteen of Cass township Sullivan County. Here he built a

pioneer home where he spent the remainder of his life.

Robert's parents were of Irish descent. He was born April 20, 1788, and

died March 26, 1855. He and his wife are buried in the old Moore Cemetery,

located in the N. E. quarter of the N. W. quarter of section 23, township 7N

range 8W Sullivan County, Indiana.

Like many other pioneers Robert was a great hunter, he used dogs to hunt

bear, deer, and other fur bearing animals. At the time of his migration into

Cass township the Fort of Caledonia was being used for shipping by flat boat.

Furs, grain, and cured meat was shipped by the settlers to towns along the

Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and to New Orleans, where there was a ready

market. Articles extremely needed by pioneers was New Orleans sugar, salt,

and hardware, which was shipped by steam boat to Merom, and then hauled over

land by wagons.

Robert and Drucella (Miles) Moore were the parents of seven children.

Notes for DRUCELLA * MILES:

Drusilla is seen on the 1850 census as Rusilla age 65 from KY and in 1860 as Drucella age 75, also from KY.  In 1850 she was living with husband Robert (4 yrs. younger than she at age 61) and 1 child only, Hannah age 26.  They were living next door to their son James & Family.  In 1860 she was shown without Robert, living with their daughter, Nancy and her husband James SHIPMAN and their children on page 873 in Sullivan Co.

I was surprised to find Robert & Drusilla's marriage on an Early Marriage Records of Southern States CD-ROM #229.  It showed Drusilla spelled Druscella and clearly shows a marriage date that fits the birth of Wm. Jefferson (1st born) exactly.   See notes on husband Robert - tells that Druscilla's gravestone is not found - but believed was in the orginal cemetery and moved south across the road to the Woodward Cem. with Robert and her presumed older brother, Thomas MILES.   Also there is mention in her marriage record in Washington Co, KY -that her father was Isaac MILES.

Notes for WILLIAM * JEFFERSON MOORE:

Wm. is shown on Page 228 of the Sullivan Co. 1850 census, a Farmer age 39, b. @ TN (although this could be Penn instead of Tenn), living with wife Elizabeth 41, b.@ IN & all kids born in IN: Stephen- a laborer 19, Drusilla 15, James 10, William J. 7, Jesse G. 4 & Isaac B. 2.  William's Father Robert & Mother Rusilla (probably Drusilla?) were living just a few doors down then on Census page 229.   Parents were both shown born in KY.

Notes for ELIZABETH * SHIPMAN:

Death records Book #3 shows Elizabeth died Aug 9, but other records suggest the 15th.  It is possible this is not the same person since although the death year is same, the death records shows 72 years, 5 mos and 2days old at death which would put her at being born in March 1821, which differs by 11 years from the date Mr. Woodward gave?  The former seems more likely since the 1810 date would put her at 83, an unusual age for someone then? Yet Mr. Woodwards date of November 20, 1810 would be consistent if the 1st childs birthdate where actually 1832 making it very improbable for the Mother to be born in 1821.  I need to do more searching and find the Timmons Cemetary, I suppose the most likely explanation is there were 2 wives both named Elizabeth?

April 1999.   The Timmons cemetery shows an Elizabeth H., clearly shown as 2nd wife of S.S. Moore this shows a death date of Aug. 9, 1893.   This clearly is NOT Elizabeth (Shipman) Moore.   This makes me wonder if the date of Aug. 15th is correct at all.   I'm suspicious that since we know that Stephen S. Moore had two wives, that Elizabeth Shipman Moore is buried in the Moore Cemetery NOT the Timmons cemetery as

Neal as his 2nd wife.  She married (1) ISAAC BLEDSOE.  He was born Abt. 1822.  She married (2) WILLIAM * "BILLY" NEAL January 13, 1853 in Probably Sullivan Co, IN, son of THOMAS NEAL and JANE MCCAMMON.  He was born December 15, 1809 in KY; or possibly 1807; near Boonesboro?, and died January 6, 1870 in Sullivan Co.IN -poss. Jan. 9).

Notes for WILLIAM * "BILLY" NEAL:

On the 1850 census of Sullivan Co, Pg.220, Wm. is shown age 41 with Wife Elizabeth 45, just a yr. before she died, and children Eliza J. 20, Mary A. 18, Thomas 17, William A. 12, Elizabeth 13, John E. 7 & Sarah E. 4.

On the 1860 Sullivan Co. Hadden Twp. census Wm. was on Page 24 then 53 b. KY & living with a 39 y.o. Charlotte ?  Possibly young 2nd wife, as Elizabeth died in 1851.  With them were kids all b.IN:  Wm. A. 21, John E. 16, Sarah E. 15,  James S.? 7, Joshua 5 & Lucinda 3.  Also with them were 3 children with the last name BLEDSOE: Wm. J. 15, Robt.M. 13 & John 11.  Now I presume that the last 3 NEAL children were from he & 2nd wife Charlotte, and the 3 BLEDSOES were from Charlotte & her 1st husband?

Generation No. 3

6.  STEPHEN * S.3 MOORE (WILLIAM * JEFFERSON2, ROBERT *1) was born June 12, 1832 in Indiana, and died December 13, 1904 in Sullivan Co, Hamilton Twp..  He married (1) ELIZABETH * NEAL February 15, 1858 in this is his 1st of 2 marriages, daughter of WILLIAM NEAL and ELIZABETH COWDEN.  She was born October 14, 1835 in Sullivan Co. IN; maybe 1836, and died August 16, 1866 in Sullivan Co.; age 29 y.o..  He married (2) ELIZABETH H. MOORE Abt. 1868 in His 2nd marriage-cannot determine her surname.  She was born March 7, 1822 in KY; Was she really 10 yrs. older than S.S;1870c=1825, and died August 9, 1893 in Sullivan Co, Hamilton Twp..

Notes for STEPHEN * S. MOORE:

Stephen is on the Sullivan Co. 1850 census living with his Father Wm. & Mother Elizabeth & siblings see Notes on his Father.

I have copies of his Obituary, death certificate (in Sullivan Co. Board of Health - Book R-33, Pg. 28), and he is listed in the Sullivan Co. Death index.  His obituary reads: "Dec. 15, 1904, Thurs. - Sullivan Democrat (newspaper).  Stephen S. Moore died at the home of his sister, 2 1/2 miles east of town, Wed. morning at 6:00, after an illness of 5 months duration of dropsy.   His funeral took place this, Thursday morning at 9:00, interment being made in Center Ridge Cemetery.   Mr. Moore was between 60 & 70 years of age and was born in Cass Twp.   He was twice married, both of his wives being dead."    His death certificate states he was 72 years old and died in Hamilton Twp. , date of burial, 12-14-1904 and cause of death listed as Nephritis & No place of burial nor home address was listed.   He is listed on the Sullivan Co, Aug. 1870 census in Cass Twp. with his 2nd wife - BUT his name is spelled MORSE there - and so is a good reason why he is not found in the index easily.

Notes for ELIZABETH * NEAL:

The source of her bd & dd are primarily her gravestone at the Neal-Paxton Cem.:  Elizabeth wife of S.S. Moore . Aug. 16, 1866,  29y. 10m 2d.    There is much confusion about her since Stephen had a 2nd wife, named Elizabeth H. Moore and whom I cannot find the maiden name of.   But that Elizabeth with middle initial "H" is in the Timmon's cemetery and was 10 yrs. older than Stephen.  We don't know if he had any chidren with this wife nor do we know when he married the 2nd wife... but we assume all his children we know of including Louisa whose bd we don't know was all from this Elizabeth Neal - his first wife who died at only 29 years old - possibly from childbirth of Louisa ?   To me the greatest confusion and question lies in the fact that the death date for Stephen's Mother is within 6 days of his 2nd wife.   I wonder if this is incorrectly mixing the two up.   But we're confident of the dates for this first wife, Elizabeth Neal.

Her grave is in the Timmon's cemetery.   It is a large gravestone that I have photographed and clearly says:   Elizabeth H.   2nd wife of S.S. Moore.  Died Aug. 9, 1893, aged 72 Ys. 5Ms. 2 Ds.

GRIFFITH, December 9, 1876, This was Phillip's last (3rd) wife; b. March 22, 1840, Palestine, IL, Crawford Co.; d. May 7, 1914, Sullivan, IN.

Notes for PHILIP * (2) B. GRIFFITH:

Phillip 2s meanderings were very confusing, especially so since he is a fairly recent person in the history, yet I cannot find how it was that he was born in Palestine, IL in 1840, when I have records showing Phillip 1 in Ohio til 1851.  William must have wandered further west than Indiana.

In 1997, I found the partial answer to this when I discovered the 1840 census for Crawford Co. IL, Pg. 284.  There was Wm. GRIFFITH with 2 males under 5, 1 between 20 & 30 (Wm.), 1 female under 5 (must have died early as I don't have her) & Rosella wasn't born for another 11 yrs., Also Phil's Mother Mary was the only other female, 20-30.  Now what tells the story better is that there were 2 MARTIN males living next door to them: one James, which initially I thought must be Mary's Father, but he is much too young: shows 1 (He) 20-30, 2 females one<5 & one 15-20?  I assume therefore that this is Mary's Brother.  Next to James MARTIN was an older family MARTIN, but whose 1st name I can't make out... looks like starts with a D or P?, the head of household being between 40-50, but with another male in the same age bracket, 3 younger males 5-10, 20-30 & 30-40, then 4 females: 5-10, 15-20, 30-40 & 40-50.  From my previous notes on the Martin's I cannot figure out which family this last one is.  I suspect the Martin's migrated North to Marshall, IL sometime later, while Wm. & his wife came back to Wooster, OH to his Father within the next 10 yrs.

Notes for ISA"BELL"A * LUCINDA MOORE:

My Father Harold Griffith recalls Belle in her later years as having a mean disposition which got worse when she became senile.  However Ralph Woodward recalls her being quite different and he portrays her as a very kindly woman. It is interesting to note that the photos we have of her and her older sister Mary Eleanor appear very similar.  I have been unable to find a single photo showing both of them together, so I have often wondered if we are not mixing them up?  Remember that those 2 sisters, Belle & Mary Eleanor, married Father & son (Philip & Mart).

This paragraph below is written by Ralph Woodward in an Email to me about my Great-grandmother Belle Moore Griffith:

"There were two expressions I remember hearing from Aunt Belle:   The Good Lord must have liked poor people -- He made so many of us.   And:  Poor

people have poor ways and rich ones mean ways.   I was around her most at the time my Granma Griffith was sick for so long before she died.

I was in 8th grade and Bob 6th.  Aunt Belle came and stayed at our house and Mom spent every other night helping take care of her Mother.  Granma lived

with Aunt Nell and Aunt Bess and alternated with Mother.  A neighbor, Cecil Alsman, came about 4AM each morning [ Feb or March] and we did the milking

and fed some, did other chores while Aunt Belle got breakfast.  I first got a fire going in the cook stove and the heater in the living room hot.  When we

came in for breakfast, she had a big pan of hot biskets, meat and gravy, and we finished up with sorghum molases [creaming it first with either real

butter or peanut butter.   Aunt Belle just could not believe the demand for her biskits.  That bread pan held three big loaves of bread made in it

and there was always a pan of "yeast starter" on the back of the stove.  It took 25 # of flour a week. for the family."
