Notes for MICHAEL * BORDERS:
We suspect Michael
& family migrated to KY between 1806-1810, most of his children were born
in VA, William was probably the only one born in KY, although later an email
contact suggested at least 3 more children (Catherine, James & Margaret, & possibly 2 more daughters
whose names we do not know. This and
most of the next few paragraphs is from the Wallace family (Paula Wallace
Watkins, Jim & Coni Wallace) of Muhlenburg Co, KY ( jwallace@muhlon.com ),
who say they descended from Catherine (YEAST) PEAVELER, wife of Christopher
& sister of Elizabeth YEAST, both d/o Jacob YEAST & Elizabeth
WYLIE. The Wallace's have also received
data from Kareen Borders ( jimbough@earthlink.net ). Kareen believes that Michael BORDERS had a
brother named Matthias, born April 3, 1771 in PA. She is not certain if they were brothers but
suspects so, and says that Matthias' parents were: George BADER & Salome BALTENSPERGERIN
from Pennsylvania, and who later moved to Virginia. She apparently feels sure that the BADER name
was changed to BORDERS, and that George's parents were: Matthaus BADER and Anna
Maria; They came to Philadelphia in 1752
from Jettenbur, Wuerttemburg, Germany.
They then settled in Lancaster Co, PA. Their son Leonard listed his
birth state as Tennessee on the 1860 census of Sullivan Co.
Kareeen also has some
court records that showed Elizabeth (YEAST) BORDERS died by 1853.
The Wallace family
sent me census locations of Michael & Elizabeth:
1810 Mercer Co, KY
1820 - Clark Co, IN -
Pg. 012;
1830 - Clark Co, IN
1840 Sullivan Co, IN
I've found a reference
in an LDS listing showing a Michael BORDERS, s/o John BORDERS & Elizabeth
SELLARDS, but I doubt it is the same one.
His BD is given as 1787 in Bland Co, VA, and a spouse named Christiany PACK. I have my Michael marrying Elizabeth YEAST
(JOST) in 1792. One would think it
likely this would be a cousin or nephew of mine.
Children of MICHAEL BORDERS
and ELIZABETH YEAST are:

born 1801 in Indiana, and died 1860 in Sullivan, IN; Mar. info on CD-229.
Notes for MICHAEL (2) BORDERS:
His much younger 3rd
wife (or more likely daughter) may have been Camalia as she was living with him
and no children in 1860 but she listed her age as 22 them, making her BD
1838. She lists being born in KY, and
Michael then lists himself born in Virginia and as a farmer, on the June 1860
Sullivan Co, IN census, page 927.

1835 in Clark County, IN (Or possibly
Orange Co.?, daughter of JOHN * DOTY. She was
born 1819 in IN; maybe born 1818; Lived
with son Michael F. as Wid., and died July 8, 1905 in Sullivan Co. IN; at age
87 - see NOTES - obituary.
Notes for ELIZABETH * DOTY:
The IL-IN marriage
CD-ROM (Early to 1850) shows the marriage, exact same people & date but gives one in Orange
Co., IN & one in Clark Co. IN?
I need to get records
in either Indianapolis and both of these counties to figure this one. Her name may have been DOATA or DOOTY ? The birth state is poorly written on the 1860
census appears to me to be Indiana, but I had previously been led to believe
she was more likely born in KY.
Her obituary from July
13, 1905 Sullivan Democrat: Death of
Elizabeth Borders - Passed away early
Sat. morning after long illness. - Mrs.
Borders was one of the oldest citizens of the town being past 87 year of age at
the time of her death. Her husband was
the late Wm. Borders, who died in 1878.
Mike F. Borders is a surviving son and for many years she has made her
home with him. The funeral Occurred
Sunday afternoon at 2:00 from the home.
Interment at the Coffman Cem."
I have been unable to find her grave there however. That is the same cemetery that Wm. Griffith
(died 1890) is buried with a large gravestone spire. Her death certificate also shows her burial
at Coffman Cem. but most importantly not only verifies the death on July 8,
1905 BUT ALSO gives a father's name:
John DOTY and state of Birth for her as Indiana .. No mother is shown. See notes on John Doty, her alleged
father. Sources of Indiana being her
birth state are: 1860 & 1870
Sullivan Co, IN census & her Death Cert.
I've found a family tree showing a DOTY family in Sullivan Co, IN - the
opinion of the living descendant, says he believes the father of his ancestor,
James DOTY, b-1803 is none other than John DOTY ! - Trying to reach him by
phone in Lake Oswego in 1995 was 503-778-7370.
The 1840 census of Sullivan Co. does in fact show both a James and a
John DOTY.
Children of WILLIAM BORDERS
and ELIZABETH DOTY are:
i. JOHN5 BORDERS,
b. 1839, Indiana; d. see Notes; m. CYNTHIA O'HAREN, 1859, Sullivan, IN; 2nd wife Mary
b:1851,Indiana; b. 1839, Indiana.
Notes for JOHN BORDERS:
On the 1860 census he
is living in the city of Sullivan, 2 doors from Philip Griffith's widow Elizabeth
(CROZIER) GRIFFITH. He is 20 and is with
wife that may be Cynthia, but is very difficult to read the letters on the
census page 17 (no children yet). John
is the brother of Elizabeth's daughter-in-law, Eliza BORDERS who was Philip (2)
GRIFFITH's 1st wife.

Notes for PHILIP * (2) B. GRIFFITH:
Phillip 2s meanderings
were very confusing, especially so since he is a fairly recent person in the
history, yet I cannot find how it was that he was born in Palestine, IL in
1840, when I have records showing Phillip 1 in Ohio til 1851. William must have wandered further west than
Indiana.
In 1997, I found the
partial answer to this when I discovered the 1840 census for Crawford Co. IL,
Pg. 284. There was Wm. GRIFFITH with 2
males under 5, 1 between 20 & 30 (Wm.), 1 female under 5 (must have died
early as I don't have her) & Rosella wasn't born for another 11 yrs., Also
Phil's Mother Mary was the only other female, 20-30. Now what tells the story better is that there
were 2 MARTIN males living next door to them: one James, which initially I
thought must be Mary's Father, but he is much too young: shows 1 (He) 20-30, 2
females one<5 & one 15-20? I
assume therefore that this is Mary's Brother.
Next to James MARTIN was an older family MARTIN, but whose 1st name I
can't make out... looks like starts with a D or P?, the head of household being
between 40-50, but with another male in the same age bracket, 3 younger males
5-10, 20-30 & 30-40, then 4 females: 5-10, 15-20, 30-40 & 40-50. From my previous notes on the Martin's I
cannot figure out which family this last one is. I suspect the Martin's migrated North to
Marshall, IL sometime later, while Wm. & his wife came back to Wooster, OH
to his Father within the next 10 yrs.

Notes for ISA"BELL"A
* LUCINDA MOORE:
My Father Harold
Griffith recalls Belle in her later years as having a mean disposition which
got worse when she became senile.
However Ralph Woodward recalls her being quite different and he portrays
her as a very kindly woman. It is interesting to note that the photos we have
of her and her older sister Mary Eleanor appear very similar. I have been unable to find a single photo
showing both of them together, so I have often wondered if we are not mixing
them up? Remember that those 2 sisters,
Belle & Mary Eleanor, married Father & son (Philip & Mart).
This paragraph below
is written by Ralph Woodward in an Email to me about my Great-grandmother Belle
Moore Griffith:
"There were two
expressions I remember hearing from Aunt Belle: The Good Lord must have liked poor people --
He made so many of us. And: Poor
people have poor ways
and rich ones mean ways. I was around
her most at the time my Granma Griffith was sick for so long before she died.
I was in 8th grade and
Bob 6th. Aunt Belle came and stayed at
our house and Mom spent every other night helping take care of her Mother. Granma lived
with Aunt Nell and
Aunt Bess and alternated with Mother. A
neighbor, Cecil Alsman, came about 4AM each morning [ Feb or March] and we did
the milking
and fed some, did
other chores while Aunt Belle got breakfast.
I first got a fire going in the cook stove and the heater in the living
room hot. When we
came in for breakfast,
she had a big pan of hot biskets, meat and gravy, and we finished up with sorghum
molases [creaming it first with either real
butter or peanut
butter. Aunt Belle just could not
believe the demand for her biskits. That
bread pan held three big loaves of bread made in it
and there was always a
pan of "yeast starter" on the back of the stove. It took 25 # of flour a week. for the
family."

Notes for WILLIAM * "WILL"
GRIFFITH:
No Middle name
apparently, friends called him "Will"
Born in Sullivan, IN in
1886. As a teenager sold ice cream in Sullivan.
Started working as a RR
Car Inspector C&EI RR in Terre Haute, at the Union Depot approx. from 1910
to 1922. He played Trombone in many
local bands (Grotto, Shriners, etc.) He quit the railroad due to unwillingness
to go on strike & fight or become a scab.
He then worked as electrical worker at Davis Gardens greenhouse in TH,I.
for about 1 year. He next worked for the
Terre Haute City schools as a custodian (janitor) for about 2 years at
Greenwood School at Voorhees & 2nd st.
Then he was transferred to the City School bookstore (6 1/2 &
Walnut) where he kept track of the school books for the city school district
from 1925 to 1947. There was no retirement plan through the school system
then. He died at home at 1354 Chestnut,
age 61, presumably of a stroke, & is buried @ Roselawn Cem. in Terre Haute,
IN with wife Grace. His Mother Belle
lived in the same house on the other side 1356 til sometime before he died, they
then moved Belle back to Sullivan, IL by her daughter Marie. Harold says his Dad never seemed to be able
to get as good of a job as the railroad job.
While working for the railroad, he used his job fringe benefit to be
able to take free trips by using passes given to employees to take Grace &
the 3 kids on trips: 1918 or 1917 to Colorado to visit James Gibbs; 1919
California to British Columbia (on this trip Richard Kenneth met a sailor
friend of Will's who inspired R.K. to go into the Navy at the age of 15 by
lying about his age. They never ate in
the train diner. Harold says they never knew there was a diner... because Grace
took a large basket of home-made bread & chicken which lasted much of the
trip. Will would occasionally get off at
train stops & run down to a nearby grocery store to pick up drinks &
more food. Will smoked Camel cigarettes
and drank lots of whole milk & coffee (from my father Harold's description
I suspect he had Peptic Ulcer Disease or Gastritis as he also consumed many doses
of baking soda- I suspect this might have been a factor in elevating his blood
pressure, ultimately causing a CVA (speculation?).

Notes for GRACE * GERTRUDE GIBBS:
Aren't many people
around to offer memories of Grace now.
My father, Harold is the oldest and her only living child after my Uncle
Dick died 1994. Her grandchildren are
only My cousins, Bill Heiny, Carolyn (now Jessup), my brother Art &
myself. Dick had one adopted child,
Bill - but he had almost no contact with Grace. My Father, relates the only early
information - he relates stories about how frugal she was. How she never sought luxuries and often
reprimanded her husband for spending too much money. The thing I recall the best, oddly enough
is finding out she died in her sleep - I was in college at Indiana St. Univ. -
My mother discovered her dead in bed while I was in morning classes.
I regret so much not
having been astute enough to question her about her life, and her
ancestry. I was even to stupid to
realize that the recipes she never wrote down but now seems so unique were
permanently lost at her death. In fact,
one recipe she called "Fried Skillet Bread" I loved so much - I've
asked many people about has never surfaced to reality.
