Descendants of Philip * (1) B. GRIFFITH

Generation No. 1

1.  PHILIP * (1) B.1 GRIFFITH was born 1779 in Maryland; other sources say Wales, & PA, and died Abt. 1855 in Prob. Sullivan Co., IN? - or Ohio?, poss 1853?.  He married ELIZABETH * CROZIER August 28, 1803 in Steubenville, OH, Jefferson Co..  She was born 1784 in Maryland; (or 1786)  poss. CAZIER, and died Aft. 1860 in Listed in 1860 census of Sullivan Co. IN;.

Notes for PHILIP * (1) B. GRIFFITH:

Most of my information on the 1st Phillip B. Griffith listed here as (1) has come from Ralph Woodward of Carlisle, IN, who has laboriously attempted to find more details. We know that Phillip was a Hatter by trade and that he had a business as of May 1807 in Chillicothe, OH in the house formerly occupied as a printing office of Bradford & Co.  An ad states "supplies the neatest fashions at Pittsburgh prices".  Sometime later he moved to Sullivan Co. IN, but before that, we think he owned land in Steubenville (directly West of Pittsburgh just across the state line.), OH with Wife Elizabeth.  Both he and Elizabeth Crozier listed Maryland as their Birthplace in the 1850 census and she gave the same in the 1860 census after Philip had died. There are 2 reported names for the "B." middle initial: Bowen and Bourne, the same story for his Grandson Phillip B..(neither guess for the middle name is necessarily very likely). The possible significance of the middle name might tell us the maiden name of his Mother or Grandparents?  In line with this train of thought is the only woman with a B. surname that married a Griffith in Maryland that I could find was:  Isaac GRIFFITH & Ann BURSON Nov.2, 1773 in Frederick County, MD.  That marriage date fits nicely with Philips' birthdate of 1779.   We have found references for at least 4 different Phillip & Philemon Griffith males in Maryland between 1797 & 1817.  But it is likely that Phil moved to Ohio by 1797. I found a Philip GRIFFITH in the 1790 Maryland census at Frederick Co. showing 1 male >16 y.o, 3 males<16y.o.(our Phil would have been 11 y.o. then), 3 females & 9 slaves. We are uncertain if our Phil may have gone back to Maryland & Pennsylvania after he was in Ohio?   This could not be our Philip (1)-who would have been only 11 years old, but it is likely his Father or Uncle.  There is also a Philip Griffith in the Maryland 1800 census, Pg.221 @ Baltimore Co.  There is also a Philip GRIFFITH on the Pennsylvania 1810 census @ Luzerne Co., Bridgewater twp. Roll # 49, Pg.154.  There is suspicion that he was in the Pennsylvania Militia 1814? Also I found a reference for a Captain Philip GRIFFITH in the Maryland Militia in 1778 & 1779, this could also be his Father?  In fact one book I copied a page from shows 6 Privates under his command 1777-1778.  Another problem shows up in the Sullivan Co., IN, town of Paxton, IN:  William Griffith age 63, merchant, born in Ohio, but he lists both of his parents being born in Pennsylvania rather than Maryland?  Ralph also believes that our first Philip B. died and was buried in Sullivan, but that the cemetary has long been lost and probably built over.  I need to visit Sullivan again to find out more about this possibility.

Another interesting lead to pursue is the death of a Nathan GRIFFITH from execution July 30, 1832 @ Millersville, OH, Butler CO.... Claim#S 8816 Vol 18, Folio 52 Archives.  Ralph Woodward believes that Nathan was the Father of Major Wm. C. GRIFFITH, also living in Sullivan, the same period as my Wm. GRIFFITH, but these are not the same person.  Ralph has memories of his Mother saying that called the Wm. C. Griffith,  Uncle Major - suggesting he may actually have been a relative but we have no real proof of that.   Ralph ponders the possibility that Nathan was also the Father of Philip 1, but this is slim speculation, that bears further study. (I would suspect a brother rather than a Father?)  The only other marriages I could find in Maryland for the time period needed came from the 1st 2 volumes of "Maryland Marriages, compiled by Robt. Barnes":

Vol. 1 - 1634-1777, Page 74

1.) Salathiel GRIFFITH - Nancy OWENS,        March 10, 1760       1 WI-76

2.) Samuel GRIFFITH - Freenettah GARRETTSON, March 15, 1764      1 BA-380

3.) Lewis GRIFFITH  -  Susannah STEWART,     Dec. 5, 1769        1 AA-148

Vol. 2 - 1778-1800, Page 89

4.) John GRIFFITH - Elizabeth RIDGELY        March 22, 1778      4 AA

5.) Chrisholm GRIFFITH - Mary Ann SCOTT      Aug.22, 1778        4 FR

6.) Samuel GRIFFITH - Martha PRESBURY        Nov. 17, 1778       1 HA-391 The cap letters to the Right signify County:  FR=Fredericks,  HA=Harford

AA=Anne Arundel, BA=Baltimore, WI=Wicomico. Numbers I presume refer to County books/pages?

Population figures for Wayne Co are interesting.  In 1810, when Philip was there there were only 332 whites (rest all Indians) living in the whole Co, but 1820, there were 11,993, 1830=23,327, 1840=36,015 which was higher than the next 3 decades, which all had slight drops in census.

This next from Ralph Woodward's research:

Philip bought and paid [in hand] for 10 lots in Town of Sullivan.  26 Dec 1850.  Land in Sul Co IN was

assessed to Philip B in 1851 and 1852 and in 1853, 54, and 55 to David Griffith Anministrator of that estate.

The best summary I can edit with "almost certain" dates & locations is:

1779 - (1878-80) Born in Maryland, Pennsylvania or possibly even Wales? Only Census record (1850) showing Birthplace, he says Maryland  (two for Elizabeth both show MD).

1797 - age 18- 1st reference living in Jefferson Co. OH (Steubenville area) - Land records show purchased land Aug. 1797, Lot #133 at  Steubenville, OH;  sold lot #136 in 1807 - of              course we cannot be certain this is our Philip Griffith;   Ralph Woodward wonders if this might be his Father's purchase, with the same name ? - no way to tell, but Philip              would only have been 17 or 18 years old then.

1803 - age 24-married Elizabeth CROZIER (age 19 y.) or CAZIER ? at or near Steubenville, OH - Far Eastern OH about 50 miles  West-South-West of Pittsburgh,  PA;  Married by                  Rev.  Benjamin Hough (per note from Sandy Day to Ralph Woodward)

1807 - age 28- Runs a Hatters shop in Chillicothe, OH (Ross County, in South-Central, Ohio), Newspaper ad for his shop.

1810 - Church & census records show him in Wayne Co. OH (Wooster area).  A Baptist church of Wooster shows history he was one of 2 of the 1st Baptists to move to  Wooster                 and this was alleged to be 1810.

1816 - age 37 - Son William born in Wooster, OH (at least 3rd child by then)

1819 - Land owned by Philip up for auction due to failure to pay taxes/interest in Wayne Co. OH -  S E quarter,  Sect. 33, Twp. 15, Range 13

1820 - At Wooster - Philip B. in census Pg. 152 Wayne Co. still. Also Mary was born this year. (Be careful there is a Philip Griffith in                                    1820 census at Trumball            Co. OH also a Philip - without the B., Page 243)

1830 - Wooster, Wayne Co, OH, census Pg. 093

1840 - P. B. Griffith (not written as Philip) is now in the Loudenville area of Richland Co.(later became Ashland Co), Ohio, census page  066  Loudenville is now in Ashland  Co, a                few miles from present day Richland Co. & about 28 miles SouthWest of Wooster.  Son, Wm. has followed his in-laws (Martin family) to Crawford Co, IL on the census                      of 1840, but is back near his Father in OH

1843 - 1844 -  Loudenville, Ashland Co, - Shown as a petitioner to form the Hanover Lodge #115 of the Masonic Order in Loudenville, OH in 1843.  - in Oct. 1844 he was made the              first J.W. of that Lodge  - Incidentally Ashland Co, was formed in 1846 (or 1843) from part of Richland Co.

1850 - age 71 -Ashland Co. census, Hanover Twp. Pg. 123, then only with  Elizabeth & son Thomas.  P.B.71, was listed as a "Hatter, but son, Thomas was shown listed as a                      "peddler" (age 34).  Other son William, age 35 is shown living then a few census pages away 126, & presumably other son Milton another Page away (127).  P.B. &                         Elizabeth list birth state as Maryland.

1850 -  Philip B Griffith listed as obtaining lots  27 -38 in Sullivan town 26 Dec 1850 - per Ralph Woodward.

1851 -  April 12;  Land (172.72 Acres) purchased in Sullivan Co.,IN - Sect 31, T8, R8.

1855 -  August, age 76 -Presumably died then; Estate divided in Sullivan Co - no record of death or burial - no  grave known.

1860 -  Elizabeth still on Census of Sullivan Co., Pg. 17. - not on 1870 census, and no record of death or burial - no grave known for either she              nor Philip.

_________________________________________________________

For a Geographical summary of above:  He was born in MD (per only one source, the 1850 Loudenville Census, but by age of 18 (not certain that land purchase was his, or some other Philip) had moved to Steubenville, OH; then had moved Southwest to Chillicothe, Ross County, OH by 1807.  Then back NorthEast to Wooster, Wayne Co. 1810-1830 At Loudenville, OH 1840-1852, & finally to Sullivan IN 1852-55.

NOTE have been unable to find where either P.B. or Elizabeth died or where buried! Ralph assumes Sullivan, but I'd like to look at the Marshall, IL cemetary where their daugh. Mary J. is buried with Mr. Martin. - NOT found there.    I would think it likely they may have lived with the only daughter at time of death, since we can't locate them defintely in Sullivan?  However Mary may have buried Elizabeth in Gibson Co, where she was believed living later in life.   Later I scoured the cemeteries around Marshall, IL, but did not find Philip nor Elizabeth.    Also why is he not found on the 1800 & census in OH or is that him on the MD census in 1800 - the more likely answer is he was living with someone else who was the head of household designee.

This regarding early Loudenville, Ohio History:     Hanover Lodge, No. 115, F. & A. M., was established by a dispensation from the Grand Lodge, October 28, 1844. The petitioners were G. H. Stewart, A. Klem, N. Haskell, John Ewalt, W. J. Cullen, P. B. Griffith, E. B. Fuller and Jacob Booth.

Some (eight) 1790 Maryland Census indexed Griffith's - I've no idea if any of these are pertinent to ours.  I've included various spellings of GRIFFITH, but not GRIFFIN.

Many Maryland counties had NO Griffith names in 1790.

Notes for ELIZABETH * CROZIER:

Above all to remember as a preface to the discussion about Philip's wife Elizabeth being named Crozier as far as I know is purely on the basis of one source - that is there is an 1803 marriage of a Philip Griffith to an Elizabeth Crozier in Steubenville, OH - but I don't believe there is one other scrap of information ever found substantiating that is our Elizabeth & Philip - let alone that her maiden name was Crozier - but as of now, that is the only clue to proceed from.     Then the state of Maryland as Elizabeth's birthplace is suggested by only two sources - both a census - that is the 1850 & 1860 census.   So far as I know nothing was actually handed down telling us a maiden name nor a Birthstate for Elizabeth.

There is a John CROZIER listed in a newspaper in Steubenville (Jefferson Co), OH (Western Hearald Pioneer Ohio Newspaper), Volume II, Sept.5, 1807, no.9, & Volume II, Oct. 10, 1807, no.14.  But little other information, or other leads have as yet been hard to find.      Ralph Woodward reports finding the following references in index to Ohio tax lists: John CROZER, Columbiana Co. 1806, 1807, 1808, 1809 & 1810; and a John CROZIER, Ross Co., (near Chillicothe - where Elizabeth Crozier & Phil Griffith lived around the 1805-1810 period) Union TWP. 1816.  I have found John CROZIER also on tax lists in 1818 & 1817 in Ross Co.  It is very likely this John is a sib, Father or at least Uncle of Elizabeth as we are certain that Philip started a Hatters shop in Ross County in 1807.  Ralph also told me he saw one census ? that shows William reporting his Mother was born in France, I could not find that census. Others tell me the CROZIER name is Irish, not French & is commonly in error assuming French origins.

Also notes from Ralph Woodward show there was a Lt. John Crozier mentioned in "Crozier - Fletcher Genealogy- Lt. John Crozier 1750-1823 & his descendants" by Ida Florence Wright Crozier; Film #1321102 item 7...this material mostly from Canada, not Maryland.

Records of Maryland Troops in the Continental service shows a James Crozier, Page 345 on list of recruits sent to Chestertown Oct 16, 1780 from Cecil Co.; Page 358 a Private, April 1, 1783 Light Infantry Co. 1st Regiment-Maryland; Page 430 On Muster rolls Jan. & June 1782; Page 498 9th Co. he was shown with Capt. Frances Revelly; Page 529 on Roll Aug.1780 to Nov 15, 1783. Also in the same publication is shown a John Crozier - Page 194- 6th Reg. 1st muster June 1778, reinlisted Dec 23, 1778, was killed @ Dobsons.

Maryland Rev Records - Newman, pub. 1938 shows the following 2 Federal Bounty Land Grants: James Crozier,Pvt. 100 acres- Warrent# 11,073

& John Crozier, Pvt. 100 acres Warrent # 11,128.  Maryland Marriages by Harper: Grozier, John to Elizabeth dau. of John Needles, Jr., widow of John Hankins; Crozier, John to Mary, dau. of Ralph Elston (Talbot land records 12/158 - 1716.)

Maryland Rev Pension Applications by Clark: Crozier, John Pvt. BlWt 11128, issued Jan. 28, 1793 to John Wright assignee of Andrew Crozier, Admin.;   Crozier, James Pvt. BlWt 11073 issued Feb. 15, 1796 to ?.  noted same numbers as above paragraph.

John Crozier (also spelled Cazier) Cecil Co. Md., Estate inventory: 1761 - wife Hannah, Robt. Crozier, witness.  Hannah later married Thomas Brevard or Barnard by Oct. 26, 1763.  Land records in Cecil Co. Maryland show the following Croziers/Caziers: Richard, Philip, & Robert.

Howard Griffith, genealogist wrote me that he checked all 7 World family tree CDs and found 17 Elizabeth CROZIER listings.  He thought the most likely Father would have been Thomas, but I have no more details than his opinion.

According to the 1860 census (Pg.18/895), in Hamilton Twp, Sullivan Co, IN, Elizabeth was living one house from her son William and was listed as a seamstress, born in MD, age 68.  Assuming that is our Elizabeth Crozier Griffith, this derives a birthdate of 1792, instead of 1784, and making her 11 years old if married in 1803 ?? - That is the last notation I can find of her, and certainly much cause for confusion.

July1999: I've just had a Crozier descendant send me material that shows a Christopher Crozier b.1795 in Ireland and Isabella Crozier, b. 1800 also in Ireland - and both in Ross County, OH in the early 1800s.   This Crozier researcher cannot definitely connect these two people but assumes it likely they are related.

Jan. 2001; I've just found an LDS  IGI listing for Philip's marriage in Jefferson Co, OH to Elizabeth  CAZIER  ( not shown as CROZIER) !

The only state of Maryland census of 1790 and 1800 that I find Cazier's listed are all for Cecil County - 3 in 1790 & 2 completely different heads of households for 1800 - below.    Yet I can find NO  census listings for Any CROZIER families in Maryland in either 1790 or 1800.  This makes the CAZIER name seem more likely to have been Elizabeth's.

Burial: An LDS  IGI record has her surname as CAZIER?

Children of PHILIP GRIFFITH and ELIZABETH CROZIER are:

                   i.    JOHN2 GRIFFITH, b. Abt. 1806; d. Bef. 1855, he was not named in Philips' Estate.

Notes for JOHN GRIFFITH:

I have not found any definite descendants of John nor where he migrated to, etc.  However in April 97, I received an email from Dorothy Sargent (not sure where she lives)  dorothys@bendnet.com   who has an ancestor John GRIFFITH, with daughter Sarah Jane, born 1849, she married Thomas ROACH.  Apparently lived in Indiana.  She'll mail me more data.

Also, I've found 3 Wayne Co, marriages in middle 1800s for John Griffith men.   The two earlier ones (1832 & 34) could be this John, and the later one 1867, could be the son of David K.

1.) John B. GRIFFITH married Rebecca SMYTH April 3, 1833 -Vol 3, Pgt. 307 (or 207) - if we can prove this is PBs son, we may have another opportunity for the "B" initial assuming it was carried through to the son.

2.) John GRIFFITH married Mary HOY, September 23, 1834, vol 4A, Pg. 76 (or 75- hard to read) -

The other John GRIFFITH marriage is mentioned on David K's son John notes.

2.               ii.    DAVID K. GRIFFITH, b. 1810, Ohio; left Sullivan, IN in 1857 w Hanchett; d. Aft. 1880, See Notes from Craig Pfannkuche, 1992.

3.              iii.    WILLIAM * GRIFFITH, b. February 14, 1816, Wooster, Ohio - Wayne Co; see Notes; d. May 22, 1890, Sullivan, Indiana, see gravestone photo.

4.              iv.    THOMAS J. GRIFFITH, b. 1818, OH; d. 1852, Wayne Co, OH- see Probate # 93 (or estate record#).

5.               v.    MARY JANE GRIFFITH, b. 1820, Wayne Co, Ohio; d. February 15, 1886, Oakland City, Gibson Co, Indiana.

6.              vi.    MILTON GRIFFITH, b. 1828, Ohio -; d. May be son of John ?, Gr-son of P.B..

Generation No. 2

2.  DAVID K.2 GRIFFITH (PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born 1810 in Ohio; left Sullivan, IN in 1857 w Hanchett, and died Aft. 1880 in See Notes from Craig Pfannkuche, 1992.  He married ELIZABETH BEAM December 2, 1830 in Wayne County, Ohio- Paint Twp- Vol.3, Pg. 177.  She was born 1815 in OH, or PA ?.

Notes for DAVID K. GRIFFITH:

Information here is from Craig Pfannkuche & Ralph Woodward.   They have information showing that David K. Griffith left Sullivan IN in late 1857 with his daughter Louisa, son-in-law and daughter Nancy J. & Hiram Hanchett & Hirams brother George Washington Hanchett.  Hiram later was murdered at the end of the Civil War in 1865.  Craig believes that David K. Griffith left the Chicago area around 1882, He was on the Chicago Census in 1870, but last census he shows up on is 1880.  Death records on he or wife Elizabeth have not been discovered.  In 1996 I spoke with Craig & I then realized that he is not actually related to these people, but was merely doing a historical study on the Mr. Hanchett who was murdered in the civil war.  Craig never came up with any more information about the Griffith line than we have here.  I have not been able to find any of the descendants of David K. Griffith as yet.

There is also a David GRIFFITH, died 4-5-1872, buried at Ashland City Cem. in Ohio, this is near where our Philip & William lived in the 1840-1850 period.  I cannot yet confirm that this is or is not Philip's son - it is an earlier death than we previously believed, as we thought he was in Chicago in 1880, but that may be a different David Griffith too.

Further details from Craig says: A copy of the marriage certificate of Hiram Solon Hanchett & Nancy Griffith from Sullivan Co, IN (from the Federal Civil War Pension file) and an FGS sheet led me to check back to Wayne Co, OH.  There in Salt Creek Twp. in the 1850 census - Pg. 185/ 93 was David, his wife Elizabeth, his daughter, Nancy J> and the other children (see this census image in David's scrapbook)  It was the SAME family which is listed in the 1860 census of Dorr Twp., McHenry Co, IL (4071/3923).  Absolute proof of the Hanchett/Griffith connection is in the documents in Nancy Hanchett's pension request and in the Chicago City Directory of 1866 where N.J. Hanchett is listed as the "widow of Solon" and living at 310 Michigan.  She is also listed as being a partner in "Hanchett & Griffith Grocers" and living at 310 Michigan.  David is usually listed as either David K. Griffith, or as we believe it is he in the 1880 Chicago census as D.K Griffith (4th ward, ED23, P.22, 144/210).

William Darby does not seem to have remarried in McHenry County.

3.  WILLIAM *2 GRIFFITH (PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born February 14, 1816 in Wooster, Ohio - Wayne Co; see Notes, and died May 22, 1890 in Sullivan, Indiana, see gravestone photo.  He married (1) MARGARET ANN * MARTIN February 11, 1837 in Richland Co, Ohio; 1st of 3 wives for Wm., daughter of JAMES MARTIN and BARBARA SIGAFOOS.  She was born February 29, 1816 in Bedford Co. Pennsylvania; see Notes, and died April 14, 1852 in Ashland Co. Ohio -probably ?.  He married (2) ROSANNAH VOORHEES April 17, 1853 in Sullivan Co, IN.  She was born 1833 in Indiana - is probably ROSINA on Pg. 474, 1850 census, and died Bef. 1866 in This is 2nd (of 3) wife of Wm..  He married (3) MARY D. MERRITT-PRATT November 15, 1865 in Sullivan Co, IN.  She was born 1833 in Wisconsin or Ohio; maiden name?; may show MERRICK, and died 1877 in this is 3rd of 3 wives of Wm.; may have died 1881.

Notes for WILLIAM * GRIFFITH:

Most of this information was given to me by Mr. Ralph Woodward.

Handed down quote to his children, etc. that "I was the 1st white boy born in Wooster Ohio."  Also it is alleged that he said his Father was one of 7 brothers who came from Wales.  He presumably came to Sullivan, IN with his Father in the early 1850s, probably just after his first wife died in 1851-52  But if the report that his son Phillip B. 2 was born in Palestine, IL in 1840 then the family must have spent some time considerably West of OHIO and considerably before the 1851-52 date that we have for their move to Sullivan.

His only obituary is from the Sullivan Democrat, May 20, 1890 (conflicts with gravestone that shows dd as May 22nd - which is probably the burial date):  "Mr. Billy Griffith died on Tuesday evening.  He has been blind for some years, and has long been a resident of Sullivan.  (that's all !) - I've never before seen him called Billy, but I suspect this is a more reliable than most for nicknames.

He apparently has alleged that he was  blinded at Fort Pillow in the Civil War. His impressive tombstone is easily read in the Coffman Cemetary & has the inscription: "Drum Major,  43rd Reg. Ind. Vol." which I believe is a Civil War notation for Regiment of Indiana Volunteers  (or could it be Regular Indiana Volunteers.   Unfortunately when I visited the Fort Pillow, Tennessee area, the historian there had a list of injured from both sides and William, or any other Griffith was not on any of the lists. That historian did have records showing the 43rd Indiana Infantry was @ Fort Pillow beginning on June 5, 1862.  The main battle there occurred April 12, 1862, resulting in a Confederate victory by Nathan Bedford Forrest. It  would be likely that he could have had a non-battle injury or simply did not get recorded.

1816 - Born in Wooster, Ohio - Wayne County - he handed down to other generations that he alleged was  "1st white child born in Wooster, Ohio"  (non-Indian).

1834 - future wife Margaret Martin was listed in church records in Ashland Ohio

1836 - age 20 -  Married Margaret Martin at Richland County,  Ohio - it is likely this was at or near Loudenville in what is now Ashland County (became Ashland Co, in 1846).

1840 - age 24 - 2nd child born = Philip B. in Palestine, IL - on Crawford Co, IL census of 1840, Pg. 284, 2 sons <5, 1 daught.<5  and both parents 20-30.   The 2 sons & parents fit             this age sequence perfectly - but the one young daughter implies a girl died but we have never known history of that.    It is  important to note that in 1840 they were living               immediately adjacent  to each of their siblings who were then just married - Mary J. GRIFFITH and James MARTIN, Jr. in Crawford Co, IL - town of Palestine - and that is                    where William & Margaret's son, Philip was born (Palestine, IL).

1850 - age 34 -census in Ashland Co. Ohio with wife Margaret & children - James Martin (shown only as Martin) age 12, Philip, age 11 & Rosella, 7 months

1852 - Margaret died, presumably in Ohio.

1853 - age 37 - Married Rosannah Voorhees at Sullivan, Indiana.

1860 - census of Sullivan Co. Page 896.  This shows he, age 46 & Rosannah, age 27 lived with children Florence age 6 & Eli age 2. He is shown as a Grocery merchant.                 Rosannah & 2 kids shown from IN, He from OH.  He is living next door to his widowed Mother then and a few doors down is a MERRITT family with a wife named Mary !.

1862 - age 46 - Was @ Fort Pillow, Tennessee in the Civil War - allegedly blinded there in an explosion on a Union ship in the Mississippi River.

1865 - age 49 - Married Mary D. Merrick-Pratt

1870 - census Sullivan Co., Hamilton Twp. with wife Mary D. and occupation a grocer living with Florence, Eli B. & Lilly.

1880 - census as a merchant in Sullivan.

1890 - age 74 - Died @ Sullivan, IN, buried at Coffman Cemetery - NO wives buried with him as far as anyone can tell .... in fact we have no idea where any one of William's 3               wives are buried !

Notes for MARGARET ANN * MARTIN:

Ralph Woodward thinks she is buried near Loudenville, OH. - but has never found her grave.

The only real evidence for her Death Date was, as far as I can tell a family bible page written by one of James Martin Srs. children - that lists all their children and some of the spouses of the wives.    I did not add the middle name ANN, til discovered her daughter, Rosella's Death Certificate said Ann ... they could have been thinking of Barbara Ann Sigafoos, Margaret's Mother however, as Barbara went by Ann.    It is therefore the only source for Margaret's middle name and may not be correct.

Notes for ROSANNAH VOORHEES:

There is a Rosina VORHEES listed on the 1850 census of Hamilton Twp, Sullivan County - she is age 16, born in Indiana - and probably daughter of Isaac & Polly.

Notes for MARY D. MERRITT-PRATT:

Her will - Bk. 2, Pg. 180 -  is dated Sept. 18, 1877 but is recorded June 6, 1881.    One interesting finding since we haven't learned much about Mary and this may be just coincidence but on the 1860 census,  William Griffith is with wife Rosannah (wife #2) and his mother, Elizabeth next door.   Then on the other side 3 doors down is a John MERRITT  (or could be MERRILL) living with a wife, Mary, she is age 20 and may be from Ohio?  -  I suspect this is William's 3rd wife, but remains to be proven.    John & Mary were with one child then, John, age 2, from Indiana.

Children of WILLIAM GRIFFITH and MARGARET MARTIN are:

                   i.    JAMES (1) MARTIN3 GRIFFITH, b. 1838, Ohio; d. Poss.with Custer but not found @ C.L.Stand.

Notes for JAMES (1) MARTIN GRIFFITH:

Ralph Woodward says that his Mother reportedly handed down information that her Father Philip B. Griffith said that he corresponded with his brother James until about the time that Custer was killed and that he was with a cavalry unit out west, but his name is not among those killed at the Little Bighorn battle.  So we will probably never know what happened to this Griffith, but apparently the photo I have with him carrying a pistol is legitimate and certainly very interesting (the clothes alone are worth a considerable ponderance).

Child of WILLIAM GRIFFITH and MARY MERRITT-PRATT is:

12.            vi.    LILLIA M.3 GRIFFITH, b. 1866; d. 1888, Sullivan Co..

4.  THOMAS J.2 GRIFFITH (PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born 1818 in OH, and died 1852 in Wayne Co, OH- see Probate # 93 (or estate record#).  He married LUCY ANN LOW January 4, 1841 in Cannan Twp, Wayne Co,OH-Vol.4a, Pg.78(or375).  She was born 1818 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1860 in still in Wayne Co, widow on 1860 census w. same girls.

Notes for THOMAS J. GRIFFITH:

Major confusion over this man.  First of all he is on two census records in 1850 - one in Ashland County on Aug. 20, then in Wayne County on Aug,.31st - both times he is listed as a "PEDDLER" born in Ohio and both times is listed without middle initial or name.   However he appears to be listed as different birthdates - the one in Ashland Co, he is also with who we presume are his parents, P.B. & Elizabeth with Thomas' age as 34.   On the Wayne Co, one he is with his apparent wife, Lucy and children - same ones on the court record as infant heirs of Philo - ...  so is Philo a nickname ? - or a middle name with the "J" initial that is found at his marriage with Lucy an error?    Then his age in Wayne Co, is listed as 32 or 39.   At first I thougt it looked like 39, but if you zoom in on the census takers writing, I believe it is 32.    To make the situation of Thomas more confusing, it happens that our Thomas is NOT in the Ohio 1850 census INDEX in Wayne Co (even though he really is on the census, just not in the INDEX), but there is another Thomas in the Index and on the microfilm sheets and even in the same township of Wayne Co, OH - Salt Creek Twp.   That other Thomas is listed as 48 years old and born in PA.   Now, it is entirely possible that these children are NOT Thomas' but maybe they are Philo's and perhaps Thomas & his wife, Lucy are assuming the care of a deceased brother's children here in 1850 ? - We simply have no evidence as to the existence of Philo except a reference in a land transfer after P.B.s death naming those same childrens name listed on the 1850 census with Thomas and Lucy.   That reference says "Infanct heirs of Philo".    Maybe the attorney that wrote that line, really meant to write infant heirs of Philip - which would be also true and may just mean that Thomas died or left his family as he was a peddler.   Later, I found births all showing the girls on the census as born to Thomas & Lucy.

Have found a court indexing the death / estate of Thomas in 1852:   Ref: Estate #93 J1-76.

Thomas' widow, Lucy LOW is found as Lucy GRIFFITH on the 1860 census on Page 33 / 186, June 18, 1860 at Salt Creek Twp, Wayne County, OH, age 40 with 3 children - all girls:    Virginia 17,  Josephine 13 & Mary 11.   We wonder if Arabella has already married by then.   Lucy A. shown on the 1850 census as age 1 is not on this 1860 census, but in place of her is Mary  who we thought was born after 1850, but she is shown as 11 y.o., the expected age of Lucy A.

Children of THOMAS GRIFFITH and LUCY LOW are:

                   i.    ARABELLA3 GRIFFITH, b. 1842, Salt Creek Twp, Wayne Co, OH.

Notes for ARABELLA GRIFFITH:

The Illinois statewide Marriage Index lists this marriage:

Arabella Griffith   to   John T. Griffith   -  Cook County, IL -  December 30, 1875   -   Volume 94.    License number 00024710  (marriage license was Dec. 28th, 1875.)   Have received  a copy of this license which shows this Arabella as 28 years old then.... According to the census records she should have been 32 or 33 in 1875, so we're not sure this is the same one.   No parents or even siblings are shown on that license.

                  ii.    VIRGINIA GRIFFITH, b. 1843.

                 iii.    JOSEPHINE GRIFFITH, b. 1847.

iv.    LUCY A. GRIFFITH, b. 1849, probably died young - on 1850 census, but not in will 55.

                  v.    MARY JANE GRIFFITH, b. Abt. 1852, Ohio.

Notes for MARY JANE GRIFFITH:

Found this marriage on the Illinois Marriages website:

MASON, Oliver  P.  &   GRIFFITH,  Mary Jane   at    MC HENRY    April 28, 1844   Vol. A  Pg.  5   License#   200

5.  MARY JANE2 GRIFFITH (PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born 1820 in Wayne Co, Ohio, and died February 15, 1886 in Oakland City, Gibson Co, Indiana.  She married JAMES (4) MARTIN, JR. February 19, 1837 in Richland Co, OH - now Ashland Co., son of JAMES MARTIN and BARBARA SIGAFOOS.  He was born November 19, 1814 in Bedford Co, Pennsylvania, and died July 6, 1862 in Sullivan,IN; md sis Margaret's sister-in-law.

Notes for MARY JANE GRIFFITH:

This marriage in Richland Co, Feb. 1837 is the only indication of the latest date so far that Philip had probably moved to Loudenville - or at least that area that later became Ashland Co.

However I also found a website that lists them marrying in November 1836 - that site doesn't say much, so, it could be their marriage application 3 months before their marriage.

Ralph Woodward has found Mary Jane on the 1880 census living in Sullivan County, in Haddon Twp, near Paxton, Indiana - next door to Chester Davis and her 13 year old Grandaughter, Jennie.

She married her brother, 'Wm.B.'s brother-in-law

Notes for JAMES (4) MARTIN, JR.:

James is on the 1840 census of Crawford Co, IL- Pg. 284 - living next to Mary J's brother William and James' sister, Margaret - one male 20-30, one female 15-20 and one female <5 (Mary E) - those ages fit perfectly with our James Jr. & Mary J.

James & Mary are on the June 6th, 1860 Indiana

census at Sullivan Co, Hamilton  Twp. Page 886:

This census image is in Mary's Scrapbook:

7.  NANCY JANE3 GRIFFITH (DAVID K.2, PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born 1835 in OH; These notes from Seymour & Pfannkuche, and died February 26, 1877 in Chicago, IL; buried @ Woodstock, IL.  She married HIRAM SOLON HANCHETT, SR. November 9, 1852 in Sullivan, IN.  He was born January 25, 1825 in Norwich, Canada, and died April 3, 1865 in Cahaba, Alabama (Civil War death).

Notes for NANCY JANE GRIFFITH:

Nancy is on the 1860 census of McHenry Co, IL at Dorr Twp., page 531- in the town of Woodstock:

Hanchett, H.S. - 32, Lawyer, born Canada West

   Nancy,  25 - born Ohio

   Harry      4 - born Indiana

   Charley - 6 mos. - Illinois

Susan - 58, born in Rhode Island  (I assume Susan is Hiram's Mother ?)

We know that Hiram died in the Civil War before the next census - but Nancy is no longer on the census in McHenry Co in 1870.  I suspect she had moved to Cook or Lake County, IL before 1870.

Notes for HIRAM SOLON HANCHETT, SR.:

I'm trying to determine if this is the same man that married Lucy A. PETTIS, Jan. 16, 1848 in Elkhart Co, Indiana.   If so, then Nancy GRIFFITH is Hiram's 2nd wife - 4 years later - and that Hiram would have moved from Elkhart Co, to Sullivan Co, Indiana.   I show he, Nancy & 2 children on the census of 1860 with a 58 year old woman named Susan Hanchett, whom I presume is Hiram's mother - see Nancy's notes- also on the same census, Seth, whom I believe is Hiram's brother on page 421 in Marengo Village, McHenry Co.  -

In January 1865, Captain Hiram S. Hanchett, of this Regiment, was captured at

Mount Pleasant, Tennessee, and taken to the rebel prison at Cahaba, Alabama.

There he organised the sixty men he found in prison, systematised a plan of

escape, and this band of brave overpowered the guard, broke out and marched

for two days, fighting all the while, hoping to reach the river and capture a

steamboat on which they might escape. After that struggle, however, they were

overpowered and then taken back. A number of the fugitives were killed, but

for Captain Hanchett a worse fate was reserved. He was enclosed in a wooden

box eight feet square with one aperture, through which his food was passed.

Here he remained until the rebels heard General Wilson was coming, and deemed

it was best to shift their quarters.

Poor Hanchett was, by over a month of this confinement, reduced to too feeble

a state to move, and they blew out his brains when they left.

Children of NANCY GRIFFITH and HIRAM HANCHETT are:

                   i.    HENRY J.4 HANCHETT, b. August 17, 1856, Indiana.

ii.    FLORA HANCHETT, b. April 21, 1858; d. believed died as infant- not  on the 1860 census.

iii.    CHARLES DAVID HANCHETT, b. December 13, 1859, Illinois.

iv.    MINNIE ESTELLE HANCHETT, b. December 24, 1861; m. ROGER CHOWN; b. Abt. 1860; d. believe he moved to Canada.

                  v.    HIRAM SOLON HANCHETT, JR., b. July 23, 1865, must have died by 1870- not on census.

8.  MARIE LOUISA3 GRIFFITH (DAVID K.2, PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born 1839 in OH; possibly Maria Louise; or is middle initial "J" ?, and died December 21, 1892 in Chicago, IL; Bur. @ Woodstock, IL.  She married PERRY W. MURPHEY, DR. April 15, 1861 in Woodstock, IL - Vol.1, Pg. 40, Lic.# 5731.  He was born 1824 in W. Virginia; or possibly MURPHY, and died September 6, 1886 in Woodstock, IL -census says Surgeon & Dentist.

Notes for MARIE LOUISA GRIFFITH:

A brief obituary was found in the Woodstock Sentinel of Dec. 22, 1892  - This is more an article than a true obituary and no other notes could be found by researcher, Craig Pfannkuche.    It calls her Marie J. MURPHY, a widow 53 years old.   We had thought her middle name was Louisa - not a "J" initial, so I'm not sure now what her middle name was.   It lists NO descendants, so I assume there were none ? -  Does say she was living at 5063 Lake Ave, but I'm not sure that is in Chicago or Woodstock.     It does say she "dropped dead" at the 53rd St. Post Office, near Jefferson Ave in Chicago.

9.  PHILIP * (2) B.3 GRIFFITH (WILLIAM *2, PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born March 22, 1840 in Palestine, IL, Crawford Co., and died May 7, 1914 in Sullivan, IN - at home -NW corner of Wolfe & Court Sts.  He married (1) ELIZA * BORDERS December 15, 1859 in Sullivan Co, IN, daughter of WILLIAM BORDERS and ELIZABETH DOTY.  She was born 1844 in Indiana; per census 1860, Sullivan Co., and died Abt. 1865 in Where is she buried?; see possible photo?.  He married (2) JANE BOLES March 1, 1866 in Sullivan Co.IN; this was his 2nd of 3 wives, daughter of EDMUND BOLES.  She was born 1842 in Indiana- per 1870 census, and died Bef. 1876 in P.B.Griff. & prob. Jane had 1 prior spouse at this time..  He married (3) MARY ELENOR MOORE December 9, 1876 in Sullivan Co, IN- Bk. 5:112 - Phillip's last (3rd) wife, daughter of STEPHEN MOORE and ELIZABETH NEAL.  She was born December 12, 1858 in Sullivan Co. IN;  tombstone says 1859, and died February 22, 1933 in Sullivan Co. IN - ruptured gall bladder.

Notes for PHILIP * (2) B. GRIFFITH:

Phillip 2s meanderings were very confusing, especially so since he is a fairly recent person in the history, yet I cannot find how it was that he was born in Palestine, IL in 1840, when I have records showing Phillip 1 in Ohio til 1851.  William must have wandered further west than Indiana.

In 1997, I found the partial answer to this when I discovered the 1840 census for Crawford Co. IL, Pg. 284.  There was Wm. GRIFFITH with 2 males under 5, 1 between 20 & 30 (Wm.), 1 female under 5 (must have died early as I don't have her) & Rosella wasn't born for another 11 yrs., Also Phil's Mother Mary was the only other female, 20-30.  Now what tells the story better is that there were 2 MARTIN males living next door to them: one James, which initially I thought must be Mary's Father, but he is much too young: shows 1 (He) 20-30, 2 females one<5 & one 15-20?  I assume therefore that this is Mary's Brother.  Next to James MARTIN was an older family MARTIN, but whose 1st name I can't make out... looks like starts with a D or P?, the head of household being between 40-50, but with another male in the same age bracket, 3 younger males 5-10, 20-30 & 30-40, then 4 females: 5-10, 15-20, 30-40 & 40-50.  From my previous notes on the Martin's I cannot figure out which family this last one is.  I suspect the Martin's migrated North to Marshall, IL sometime later, while Wm. & his wife came back to Wooster, OH to his Father within the next 10 yrs.

1840  Born in Palestine, IL, Crawford Co, IL.. see Notes above & Father Wm.

1859  age 19 -Married Elizabeth Borders (she was age 15!), @ Sullivan, IN

1860  Elizabeth born (1st child); The 1860 census was taken a short time before her birth, showing just Philip, age 20 b.@IL & wife Eliza age 16 born in IN.  They were living next            door to Wm. BORDERS & Elizabeth (Eliza's parents).

1863  age 23 -James "MART"in Griffith born (my Great Grandfather).

1866  age 26 -Married Jane BOLES

1876  age 36 -Married Mary Eleanor MOORE - 3rd & last wife

1914  age 74 -Died at Sullivan, IN

1933  Mary Eleanor died.

He died while feeding chickens next to his home in Sullivan at the NorthWest corner of West Wolfe & North Court Streets.   This house was still standing in 2001.  I first saw it when his Grandaughter, Della Marie Griffith Carpenter showed it to me about 1989.

Notes for ELIZA * BORDERS:

1850  -She is on the 1850 census of Hamilton Twp, Sullivan Co, Page 475, (parents and older siblings at bottom of previous page), living with Parents William age 39, a farmer born in KY, with Elizabeth also born in KY age 31. - children all born in Indiana: John 12,  Michael 9, Eliza 6, Thomas 1.  They were then living next door to Michael Borders age 32.  and on the other side is Isaac Voorhees with a wife Polly and a daughter who is probably William Griffith's 2nd wife, who we thought was named Rosannah, but who here is named Rosina, age 16.

1860 - She is shown on the Sullivan Co, IN, 1860 census apparently married with Philip - she age 16, he age 20.  They were living next door to her parents William Borders, age 49 and Elizabeth, age 44, and their son Michael.  Eliza lists birth state as Indiana.

Notes for JANE BOLES:

I believe I've found Jane on the 1850 Sullivan County census, District 105, Page 471-236, living with parents Edwin BOWLS - age 78 from Virginia (could be Grandfather ?), and a woman presumably wife but maybe not ? - Ann BOWLS, age 44 from Kentucky and Mary 16, a brother age 14, whose name I cannot read, another brother Albert 11, a sister whose name I can't read 12, Jane age 9, and Amanda 5.

Children of PHILIP GRIFFITH and ELIZA BORDERS are:

                   i.    MARY ELIZABETH "LIZZIE"4 GRIFFITH, b. September 3, 1861, IN; date and name McCarter per her death certificate; d. Notes for MARY ELIZABETH "LIZZIE" GRIFFITH:

Killed when the car she was in was hit by a train at Sullivan, IN- the car was driven by Lizzie's half-niece, Eva Goins Willis.   Eva and her 3 year old daughter, Simone were also injured and hospitalized, but both survived.   Her obituary tells nothing about her ancestry.   Her death certificate shows:  buried at Center Ridge, Setp. 12, 1838.   Father, Philip Griffith, he born Ohio.   Mother, Borders (no first name given), Mother's Birth place Indiana.  Informant Charles Boone.   Killed by train at crossing on Jackson St.

Notes for JOHN M. MCCARTER:

There is a John McCARTY R. age 22 on the 1870 census, Sullivan Co, Gill Twp, Page 65-1 June 6, 1870 -  that would fit Liz's 2nd husband well.    This man has occupation then of "working in sawmill" & is with wife in 1870 named Mary L. age 17 from Indiana.    He is living next door to his apparent parents in 1870, John McCARTY age 47 from KY and his wife, Nancy, age 40 from TN.  There are several children still living with John Sr. - from ages 17 thru 3, but none with John Jr. yet.

Notes for ISABELLE * LUCINDA MOORE:

My Father Harold Griffith recalls Belle in her later years as having a mean disposition which got worse when she became senile.  However Ralph Woodward recalls her being quite different and he portrays her as a very kindly woman.  It is interesting to note that the photos we have of her and her older sister Mary Eleanor appear very similar.  I have been unable to find a single photo showing both of them together, so I have often wondered if we are not mixing them up?  Remember that those 2 sisters, Belle & Mary Eleanor, married Father & son (Philip & Mart).

This paragraph below is written by Ralph Woodward in an Email to me about my Great-grandmother Belle Moore Griffith:

"There were two expressions I remember hearing from Aunt Belle:   The Good Lord must have liked poor people -- He made so many of us."   And:

"Poor people have poor ways and rich ones mean ways".   Ralph goes on to say he was around her most at the time my Grandma Griffith was sick for so long before she died.

I was in 8th grade and Bob 6th.  Aunt Belle came and stayed at our house and Mom spent every other night helping take care of her Mother.  Grandma lived with Aunt Nell and Aunt Bess and alternated with Mother.  A neighbor, Cecil Alsman, came about 4AM each morning [ Feb or March] and we did the milking and fed some, did other chores while Aunt Belle got breakfast.  I first got a fire going in the cook stove and the heater in the living room hot.  When we came in for breakfast, she had a big pan of hot biskets, meat and gravy, and we finished up with sorghum molases [creaming it first with either real butter or peanut butter.   Aunt Belle just could not believe the demand for her biscuits.  That bread pan held three big loaves of bread made in it and there was always a pan of "yeast starter" on the back of the stove.  It took 25 # of flour a week. for the family."

Notes for SCOTT WILLIS:

Note below is from a WILLIS website regarding Martha WILLIS:

Martha was probably the widow of Levi Willis. Levi Willis married Patsy (a.k.a Martha) Robards in Jessamine County, Kentucky on July 19, 1819. According to the marriage bond, John Robards was bondsman, William Robards gave consent for the bride to marry, and Robert and Mary Boatman, mother of the groom, gave consent.    Levi Willis was the son of Sherwood (a.k.a. Sherod) Willis. Sherwood Willis died in Jessamine Co., Kentucky in June 1806. He left a will naming his wife Mary Ann, youngest son "Lewis" (probably Levi), and daughters Eliza and Jenny. (There were other children not named in the will.) Sherwood's widow, Mary Ann, married Robert Boatman on December 22, 1807 in Jessamine Co., Kentucky. The Boatmans and several of the married Willis children later moved to Sullivan County, Indiana.

There is a James OSBORNE, 1 year old on Page 251 of the Sullivan County, Indiana cenus - it appears his middle initial is "F" but is hard to read - don't believe it is "M" however.   His parents are  James age 32 & siblings Sarah 29.  Siblings are Norma 12, Seth 10, Hannah 9 & Susan 23.....  Other problem with this as the correct one is that the Father, James is shown from Kentucky and all others from Indiana.    Later information shows James' parents were Bernard OSBURNE & Bridget MAHER.

13.  MARY ELIZABETH3 MARTIN (MARY JANE2 GRIFFITH, PHILIP * (1) B.1) was born 1839 in Ohio - full name on their marriage license, and died Bef. 1880.  She married CHESTER OWEN DAVIS May 28, 1861 in Vigo County, Indiana, son of JOHN DAVIS and MARY DAVIS.  He was born Abt. 1834 in Indiana, and died December 1903 in Obit in Terre Haute Evening Gazette - 12-15-1903.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH MARTIN:

Believe she died before her Mother, not on C1880;  She is on the census of June 1860 w. parents @ Sullivan Co

Notes for CHESTER OWEN DAVIS:

Chester O. Davis allegedly moved from Paxton in Sullivan Co, later South 2 counties to Gibson Co, at or near Oakland City, (and I see an Oakland Junction next to Oakland City).   This appears to be in Columbia Twp.     I find 3 cemeteries there named   Albright,  Montgomery and Townsley.    Would like to search these.... I would wonder if Mary E.'s Mother, Mary  J. (PBG's only Daughter) who died 1886, may have lived with them and even possibly PBGs wife ?   Then by 1903 when he died he was living with his son-in-law, Charles C. Lafollete at 2019 N. 8th St., Terre Haute, IN.

Joanne LaFollette of Terre Haute, IN sent  me this:    The name is Chester O. Davis.   We have a document from the bureau of pensions granting him a pension , 29 August, 1885.  He was a 1st sergeant in co. E,14th regiment of Indiana volunteer infantry  (Civil War).

We do know that he once lived near Paxton, Indiana and later Oakland City, IN (Gibson County).  See notes for his Father, John S. as Chester is on the 1850 census with his family, Page 202-403

In June 15, 1880 he is in Haddon Twp, Sullivan Co, on census page 15-588.   He is shown as age 45, born Indiana, and both of his parents from KY,  living with his daughter, Jennie age 10.   Next door is M. J. MARTIN, whom I assume is Mary J. Griffith - here she is age 59, consistent with William's sister, Mary J. who we believe was born 1820.    So, Mary J. was living next door to her son-in-law Chester & her Grandaughter, Jennie.   Only conflict I see is that Mary J. lists herself  born  in Indiana and her Father from KY and nothing listed for her Mother.    Jennie lists her Father and herself, both born in Indiana but says her Mother was born in Ohio.

Children of MARY MARTIN and CHESTER DAVIS are:
