Notes
Gottlieb J., the son of Gottlob Gugeler and his wife, Eberhardyna Orthlieb, was born February 13, 1829 in Wurtenburg, Germany. He came with his family to the United States in 1845, landing in New York in September and settling in Erie, Pennsylvania. They lived there until spring, and then went to Kosciusko County, near Webster, Indiana. His family included Gottlob Jr., Louisa, Henrietta, Rosina, Gottlieb, Jacob, Christian, and William. The youngest 5 came to Lyons Creek, Kansas.

Gottlieb first came through this area (Lyona, Kansas) in 1858 on his way back from California where he had been seeking gold and traveling for about 8 years. He liked the area so well, he brought his wife, Rosena Layer, whom he married December 22, 1859 in Indiana, and his brothers, Christian and Jacob, to settle the new found area. Another broter, William, followed later.

In 1860, he was elected the first probate judge in Dickinson County (,Kansas). They had a daughter, Louise, in 1860, Also, twins Albert Frederick and Heinrich August (1862). Heinrich died in infancy and Albert died in 1874. Gottlieb was influential in getting the church established in the early years.

Gottlieb felt called to serve in the Civil War with the Union Army. His wife and children lived with Ernestine (Mrs. John Adam) Biegert while he as away. He enlisted in the Union Arm September 2, 1862, 2nd Kansas Regiment, Company C., and became a sergeant. He was captured at Ft. Gibson, Indiana, September 1864, and held for some time in Tyler, Texas. He was mustered out August 11, 1865.

After returning from the war, their son, George William, was born June 30, 1866, followed by Mary Alice Gugeler in 1874.

Five generations of this founding family have been active in many capacities in the Lyona Church or their respective churches wherever they are living. Musical abilities have also followed down the family line.

Children of Gottlieb Gugeler and Rosenia Layer are:
+ 93 i.   Louisa10 Gugeler, born Oct 10, 1860; died in Ligonier, Indiana.
94 ii.   Albert Frederick Gugeler, born Apr 13, 1862.
+ 95 iii.   Mary Alice Gugeler, born Mar 08, 1874 in Lyona, KS; died Jan 19, 1950.

       69. Christoph Jacob9 Gugeler (Gottlob Jacob8, Elias Jacob7, Georg Jacob6, Georg Jacob5, Konrad4, Gottlob Georg3, Jerg2, Jerg1) was born Jun 24, 1831 in Germany, and died Aug 26, 1898 in Lyona, Kansas, USA. He married Elizabeth Weber Dec 03, 1854 in Kosciusko Co., IN.7.

Notes
Emigrated to Kansas
When Gottlob Jacob Gugeler came to the United States of America in 1846 the name changed from Gugeler to Gugler upon entry into the USA in N.Y. so all of the kids started to use the same spelling at that time. I do not know when Christoph changed his name but I believe it was when he came to the USA in 1859. Need to do more research in this.

The Jacob Gugler family came to the Lyona community from Indiana by covered wagon in 1859 or 1860. They settled and established their home one mile west of the church on Carry Creek acquiring 160 acres (80 acres from each section on both sides of the road up and down the creek). They purchased a one-room log cabin for $20, and moved it onto the land west of the road. They lived in it while building the stone house which still stands today.

In 1865, Jacob built the south part of the house, the basement, and one room upstairs. In 1867, he built the first part of the stone barn. In 1874, they added a second portion of the house, often referred to as the wash house (in later years), and a loft over the main flor as a bedroom for their sons. In 1875, the north part of the stone barn was built with two archways and grain bins up above. In 1877, the room, later used as a kitchen, was built onto the main part of the house, an upstairs room, and the connection to the wash house was made. In 1879, the stalls for 2 more horses were built on the east side of the barn. All of these buildings and additions have the dates carved into the rock and can still be read today.

Several of Jacob's children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild lived in this house, but Fritz Gugler, a grandson, lived there 50 years -- the longest period of time for anyone. This house and part of the original acreage are now owned by Fritz's children -- Clark and Donna Gugler, and bill and Beth (Gugler) Wisecup.

The acreage east of the road now belongs to Ben Gugler's son, Donald and Evelyn Gugler. (Now has passed on to Donald and Evelyn Gugler's daughter Ardis Gugler). This house was built in 1914 by Ben and other family members at the time Ben and Ethel Lawrence Gugler were married. Donald has lived on this portion of the Jacob Gugler original acreage for more than 60 years. (Both Ben Gugler and Donald Gugler have passed away while in the basement workshop of this house. Donald Gugler was born within ten feet of the place in the house where he died.)

Church records show that Jacob and Elizabeth Gugler became members on probation of the Lyona Methodist Church in 1860 and full membership January 1, 1862. Jacob was a lifetime member and worker in this church from then until his death in 1898. During this time, he also built the stone house known as the Edwin Gugler farm now owned by Lee and Estherline Sellin. Lee's great grandfather was a brother to Jacob Gugler. Elizabeth was a very religious woman, and saw to it that all her children had a christian homelife. In 1903 after Jacob's death, she moved into Woodbine where she transferred her membership, and continued faithful until death.

They lived there about one year and then moved several miles further up Carry Creek in a 3-room log house.

Christian was a farmer and nurseryman. He grew trees to seel to the pioneer settlers and for his own orchard. These trees included fruit trees as well as the osage orange (hedge) planted as living fences by the early settlers. Margaretha was a silk weaver by trade, but she soon lost her touch on the windswept priries of Kansas. Christian filled various offices of trust and responsibility with marked fidelity.
