(Bruce) I have named my first son after Benjamin known as Ben. I grew up in the house that Ben Gugler built and lived in. I was a shadow of Ben for the first part of my life. My father moved back into his dad's place after Ethel passed away. I was home the due to a bad snow storm the day that Ben died. He just passed away in his sleep during a morning nap.

The home place is about five miles north of Woodbine, Kansas in a small area called Lyona which is named that after the Lyona Methodist Church.

Ben Gugler was an engineer and operator of the steam engine used to thresh grain in the early 1900's. The engine was used to thresh for many farmers in Dickinson and Geary counties. He met his wife, Ethel Lawrence, while she was helping run a cook shack for the threshers in the Republican River Valley where Milford Dam is now located. They were married in 1914; built their home one mile west of the Lyona Church; and both became members of the church in 1920. Ben was a mechanic, and spent much time keeping cars, tractors, and other gasoline engines repaired for people in the area. Ethel will be remembered as a mid-wife assisting at the birth of many babies for the community and areas farther away. They raised three of their four children.
