Notes
Phillip Gugler and Dorothy Oesterreich were married in a double wedding with her sister Oliver and G.Raymond Garrett on September 24, 1925 at their home in Woodbine, Kansas. After a trip to Colorado, Phil and Dorothy lived in a cottage along Carry Creek at the foot of Shuerman hill, north of Woodbine.

In 1931 we moved to our home place at a time to become well acquainted with conditions during the depression. A flock of chickens provided eggs that were traded for groceries and with a garden there was food on the table.

The early thirties are remembered as drought years when fruit and shade trees as well as field crops were lost. Drought brought dust storms that darkened the sky and sifted dust into drifts, near drifts even indoors.

Pleasant memories of achievements and pleasures as our family grew up with interest in 4-H, school, church, and home.

Church attendance depended greatly on road conditions. Roads were often impassable during rainy seasons so we held Sunday School at home with the children at those times and dinner with the neighbors just a short distance and a walk across the pasture.

Live on the farm is not always the most pleasant --- but interesting.

Dad always had a lot of chores to do, but seemed to always find time to get something extra done for someone if it needed doing. He just got up earlier in the morning.

After every heavy snow he would hitch up Pet and Babe to a V-shaped drag. He would open Web Janke's driveway and our roads between.

Before the roads were graveled, rain brought traffic to a halt. He would ride up to the county sand road on the horse about every other day, pick up the neighbood mail in a flour sack, and deliver it to everyone.

Even after the roads were graveled, there was one mud hole that was bottomless, south of the Ches Janke's house. Dad would leave his little Cletrac crawler tractor sit down there near the mud hole and arrange chores so he could go down through our pasture and pull the mailman through the mud hole every day. He would also get calls from time to time from Jankes saying someone was stuck and he'd go pull them out. Dad was the only one that could start the stubborn Cletrac. The tow job could go on for two or three weeks until the hole dried up. I never heard him complain, he just did what needed doing. He always said he't rather wear out that rust out.
