Adam W. Gull (b. March 09, 1801, d. March 21, 1881)
Adam W. Gull (son of Johann Goll and Catherine Schaffer)65, 66, 67, 68, 69 was born March 09, 1801 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, and died March 21, 1881 in Kingwood, Preston Co., West Virginia.76, 77. He married Mary A. Smell on June 25, 1820 in Monongalia Co. Virginia78, 79, daughter of Johann Philip Smell and Elizabeth Bierson.
Notes for Adam W. Gull:
Adam was living in Monongalia Co. Virginia by 8 June 1819. ( Wolf Scalp Certificate, Monongalia Co. Court Records)
He likely made his early living as a hunter and trapper. (He appears to have develop quite a reputation as a hunter. Years later, a local historian referred to Adam as a "good sportsman". Oren F. Morton, A History of Preston County, West Virginia,(Kingwood, W.Va.: The Journal Publishing Company, 1914), 355. Within a year he met and married Mary A. Smell. In 1827 he was appointed constable for the Eastern District, Monongalia Co., Virginia. During his first term while performing as a guard he applied to court for payment for his guard duty as allowed by Virginia law. He "produced in court an account amounting to one dollar 85 cents for serving as a guard over Lucy Plum which is allowed and ordered to be certified to the Auditor of Public Accounts" (Monongalia Co. Order Book 9) In September 1829, at the end of his term as constable, he was given special recognition by the Commonwealth of Virginia "for keeping the peace". (Monongalia Co. Court Records)
It appears he may have been reappointed for another two year term. On 1 August 1831 either near the end of a term or the beginning of a new term, he was injured at Morgantown Ferry while participating in a raid (Monongalia Co. Order Book #11) The injury allegedly left him a cripple for the rest of his life. (Morton describes Adam as "a cripple." Morton, 355. ) By 13 March 1832 he moved to the county's Western District. (Department of Taxation, Personal Property Tax Lists, Monongalia Co. Virginia) He was "exempted from payment of County levies, poor rates and working on public roads." by 28 January 1833. (Monongalia Co. Order Book #11)
On Monday, 24 June 1833 he was again appointed, "to serve as a constable within the said county (Monongalia) for the term of two years," this time for the Western District.(Monongalia Co. Court Records and Monongalia Co. Order Book #11) His term expired in June 1835.
On 18 November 1836, Adam was summoned to appear before the justices of Monongalia Co. Court to answer allegations that he was seen engaged in illegal gambling (playing cards) on a riverboat across from Morgantown on two separate occasions. The allegations were founded by the Grand Jury and indictments handed down. How the matter was resolved is unknown.
According to Morton, an Andrew Gull arrived early in the 1840's from Monongalia County to settle on Bird's Creek at the Hiram G. Burke place. (Morton,355) Morton's description of "Andrew" leaves little doubt he is referring to Adam. In fact Adam relocated to Preston Co. sometime between December 1842 and March 1843 (Department of Taxation, Personal Property Tax Lists, Monongalia Co. Virginia) He purchased a farm of probably no more than 30-50 acres which was valued at $750 in 1850. (US Census, 1850)
His sons, David U. and Philip S. are living on their own places near him raising their own families. His oldest daughter, Elizabeth, married to Benjamin Squires, lives with John and Dorothy Wagoner on a farm valued at $1800. Possibly due to his physical condition as well as the impact of getting older, Adam hired 18 years old John Quick as a laborer. Quick lived with Adam and his family.
By 23 July 1851 Adam was exempted from all persoanl property taxes. The 1860 US Census showed him as a laborer owning only $40 in personal property. Sometime between 1860 and 1870, Adam and his wife Mary moved to Mineral Co. to live with their son George who resided in Keyser, West Virginia. On 17 August 1870 Mary dies. Adam spends the next 11 years living with his daughter Catherine and son-in-law David McGinnis in Preston Co. He dies just a few weeks after reaching his 80th birthday on 21 March 1881. Both he and his wife Mary are buried in the Union Cemetery (near the high school) in Newburg, Preston Co., West Virginia. Because of years of neglect, the grave markers have all but disappeared. There is no marker for either Adam or Mary.
