HISTORICAL MARKER IN ODESSA, TEXAS @ 903 NORTH SAM HOUSTON AVENUE: VAN HORN, MELLIE MABEL, AUG 28, 1969, In 1938 widowed businesswoman, "Mrs. Van" moved here to build the Van Horn Place, a boardinghouse designed to attract single schoolteachers. Due to scarce housing, it became Odessa's first coed rooming house. Women & men occupied separate floors. Mrs. Van lived on premise for 12 years before selling in 1950. Arising at 4 AM she packed lunches for oilfield workers, provided family style meals for 6 days a week and served a popular fried chicken lunch every Sunday. Boarders fondly recall her holiday celebrations and continual bridge games. Born in Leander, Texas, she married Paul Van Horn. They had two daughters, Angel & Pauline, devoted to her family & business. She retired at age 72.
