Lemuel Monroe Hopkins (b. 20 Mar 1877, d. 18 Sep 1959)

Lemuel Monroe Hopkins (son of Warren H. Hopkins and Elizabeth Barnes) was born 20 Mar 1877 in Iowa, and died 18 Sep 1959 in Nebraska. He married Myrtle Spear, daughter of Clarence Talbert Lindon Spear and Sarah Irwin Spear.

Orphaned at 12, he lived with his brother, Frank. In l90l he had married a neighbor and they had two children and moved to Banner County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded a full section of land. At first they lived in a sod house made from heavy grass with black roots. The large room was partitioned by a heavy curtain. There were four windows of one glass sash each. sod was also used for barn and chicken house. In l905, they bought a neighbor's house and used the logs to build a real house for the family. The children rode their horses 6 miles to school. In retirement, Lem and Myrtle sold the ranch to son Kim and bought a house in Scottsbluff.
