Col. (USA)(77)

Author of this data file.
I was born in Ypsilanti Michigan on June 2, 1934; my father was a career soldier
(stationed in Ypsilanti at the time) and my mother was a school teacher. I was
born on the day my father reached 20 years of active duty in the Army. When I
was quite young (2 or 3) my dad was reassigned to Chicago, and we lived in Elmwood
Park, Illinois. In the Summer of 1940 (I was 6) he was reassigned to Fort Shafter,
Hawaii (then T.H., Territory of Hawaii), sailing from New York on the U.S.S.
Republic, and going through the Panama Canal to San Francisco and thence on to
Hawaii. We were living there on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked.
My mother and we three children were evacuated to the United States on the ship
"Monterrey", leaving port on December 25, 1941, travelling in convoy
with destroyers, and landing in San Francisco on January 1, 1942. We moved to
Mount Pleasant, Michigan, near my maternal grandparents in Shepherd, Michigan.
In the Summer of 1942 my dad returned, and we were stationed at Camp White, Oregan
(near Medford). In 1943 we moved to Ft. Lewis, Washington, where we stayed until
1946; I had finished the 6th grade, and the was was over. During that Summer
my father was reassigned to Italy
(Army of Occupation), and then to Germany. The rest of the family stayed on my
grandparents farm until Fall, and then we sailed to Germany on the U.S.A.T Bridgeport.
We lived in Stuttgart, Germany until 1948, and then moved to Fort Leavenworth,
Kansas. When my dad retired from the Army in 1950, we moved to Bay City, Michigan.
I finished High School in Bay City and enrolled in the University of Michigan
(Ann Arbor, Michigan) in 1952. I graduated in the Summer of 1956 (B.S.E. in Chemical
Engineering), went to work for E. I. DuPont in Gibbstown, New Jersey, and was
called to active duty in the Army in September, 1952.
I first was assigned to Fort McClellan, Alabama, and then to the U. S. Army Chemical
Depot in Ota (Camp Drew) Japan. When the depot was reorganized I moved to Hatchioji,
Japan (west of Yokohama). In 1958 I was assigned temporary duty in the Infantry
and moved to Company C, 12th Battle Group, First Cavalry Division in Korea. I
returned to Fort Benning, Georgia, late that year to finish my Infantry service.
In 1960 I returned to the Chemical Corps and was stationed as Executive Officer,
69th Chem. Co. (Smoke Generator) at Fort McClellan. I attended the Advanced Chemical
Officers' Course there. In 1961 I was sent as a student to the U. S. Naval Postgraduate
School in Monterey, California, where I (1) met and married Lynne, and (2) graduated
with a M.S. degree in Physics. We were assigned to the Pentagon outside of Washington
D. C. for three years (Susan was born here), and then to Oberammergau, West Germany,
where I instructed in the NATO Systems Department of the U. S. Army School, Europe
(and Laura was born in Munich). I was next assigned to combat in Vietnam (the
family stayed in Carmel, California at this time), where I served in the 9th
Infantry Division (Dong Tam, Vietnam) and the 25th Infantry Division (Cu Chi,
Vietnam) as Division Chemical Officer. My major duty was to manage operators
of the Airborne Personnel Detector ("People Sniffer") in helicopter
missions.
After Vietnam I was stationed as a student at the Command and General Staff College,
Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and in late 1961 I was assigned to Picatinny Arsenal,
Dover, New Jersey. We next moved to Maxwell Airbase, Montgomery, Alabama (Staff
at the Air University) and then to Milan Tennessee as Commander, Milan Army Ammunition
Plant. After a brief tour in Washington D. C. again, I returned to Milan to retire.
That's where we live now. He was married to Lynne Adelle ENSLEY on 17 Apr 1963
in U. S. Naval P. G. School Chapel, Monterey, CA. Lynne
Adelle ENSLEY(77)
(15) was born on 8 Jul 1943 in Roswell, New Mexico.
