4 Feb 1906 in Elliot County, Kentucky. He died on 3 Mar 2000 in Belfonte Hosp.,
Belfonte, Greenup Co. Kentucky. He was buried on 6 Mar 2000 in Pleasant Hill
Ce, Carter County, Kentucky. Estill was found to have colon cancer which was
successfully removed. Estill was raised by his brother Henry as his mother died
when he was only a boy. His siblings were raised by other family members. Estill
was a very hard worker. He came up during the years when one had to walk for
miles before even putting in a hard days work. Estill help build the Grahn school
house. He told of using wheelbarrows to haul concrete to pour into the footers.
In the evening, He would shoulder a 50 pound sack of flour and walk 10 to 15
miles home. Estill also worked on building the railroad and on the county roads.
Estill worked for a short time in Westinghouse in Mansfield, Ohio. He later
returned home to his family to raise tobacco and crops on his farm. Estill was
always outside working on his farm. If mudholes needed filled, he handcarried
the rock to fill them. Estill always kept two horses which he seemed to like
to treat like they were babies. Estill was able to work the team late into his
70's. He was small of stature but was wired muscle. Estill enjoyed his long
life and saw very few sick days.
Estill enjoyed being around people and would go to church all around the area.
He met many friends and was loved by all who knew him. Just days before his
death, he had been to church, to the funeral home and visiting with neighbors.
Estill never ceased being active even when he went to the hospital after suffering
a fatal heart attack. After various tests, he told his daugther that he was
ready to get out and go fox hunting. He joked and teased his great-grandchildren.
True to his nature, Estill never complained even at his sickest moment. Estill
lived through a remarkable time in our nation's history. He lived through World
War I, World War II, Korean, Viet Nam, Desert Storm. He saw man build flying
machines and eventually land on the moon. Estill says he could remember seeing
the first flying machine, that being the one built by Matthew Sellers. The first
truck he ever saw was when he was working at the brickyards in Grahn. Rebecca
Opal KNIPP and Joseph Estill KNIPP had the following children:
