Was parolled from Civil war at Rock Island Prison in Illinois, given transportation by rail to Loachapoka, Alabama. He had to walk the rest of the way home, about 60 miles. Family legend says he got home sick with phenumonia at end of July 1865 and died the first week of August, just five days later.
Supposed to be buried in unmarked grave at Swamp Creek Church Cemetery in Coosa
County. This information from journal of Willie Frank Webb.

About this time the Civil War was raging, and James left his large family in Sarah's hands and joined the Confederacy as a Private, Company C, 34th Regiment Alabama Infantry. His military record shows few payment reciepts for his services. November 25, 1863 James was captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Tennessee. This was a major defeat for the South. This battle took place near Chattanooga. As a prisoner of War, James was sent to Louisville, Kentucky to the Union prison where he was processed and sent further North to Rock Island Illinois in time for Christmas. There he remained until the amnesty treaty was signed. He signed an oath of Allegiance to the United States and was paroled June 2, 1865. His parole papers described him as dark complexion, dark hair, dark blue eyes and 5'10" tall, 46 years of age. Transportation was furnished by train to Loachapoka, Alabama. Loachapoka being the closest railroad town although still sixty miles from home.

His wife Sarah is buried in Coopers Cemetery, in Coosa County. She died October 8, 1894. She filed for a Pension from the state for widows of soldiers killed in the War, but she did not give evidence of his death, nor did she state a date of death.

When I visited the home of Nancy Thomas in Coopers, Alabama in 1979, she had a large picture of James L. Webb in his Confederate Uniform hanging on her wall. [ I could kick myself for not getting a picture of it.]

______________

THE BATTLE OF MISSIONARY RIDGE

The Battle of Missionary Ridge took place November 25, 1863. It was a union victory in the American Civil War. The battle took place on Missionary Ridge - about three miles east of Chattanooga, Tennessee- where 40,000 Confederates under General Braxton Bragg were encamped. The attacking 60,000 Union forces were commanded by General U S Grant. On the previous day, the Union right wing had taken nearby Lookout Mountain.

The outcome of the Battle of Missionary Ridge was decided by General George Thomas' Army of The Cumberland, which exceeded Grant's orders by charging up the heights. They broke the Confederate defenses, and sent the enemy fleeing. Casualties
were about 5,000 for each side.
