Martha Ann Hicks was born July 19, 1783 in Tennessee, and died Bef. 1850 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She married Thomas William Whitworth on July 19, 1800 in Tennessee, son of John Whitworth and Elizabeth Claybrook.

In the name of God amen: I Mary Ann Hicks of the County of
Wilson and State of Tennessee, being very sick and weak
of body, but perfect in mind and memory, thanks be unto
God, calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing
that it is appointed for all persons to die, do make and
ordain this my last will and testament, and my
body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent
Christian Burial at the descretion of my surviving friends,
nothing doubting , I give, demise and dispose of the same in the
following manner and form.
First, I bequeath to PHILIP KOONCE and my beloved
daughter ANNE KOONCE, wife of PHILIP, four negroes,
namely a girl Phillis, and a boy Norrice, to be theirs
during their natural lives and at their deaths to give the to
their children as they think proper and equitable. Also,
I give and bequeath to THOMAS WHITWORTH and
my beloved daughter, MARTHA wife of THOMAS, four
negros during their natural lives, namely;Charles, Mingo,
Samuel and the child that the negro woman Fanny, being pregnant
with at this time, and at their deaths to give them to their
children as they shall think proper and equitable. Also,
I bequeath to PHILIP KOONCE and his wife ANNE KOONCE
during their natural lives the said negro woman Fanny
above mentioned, and at their deaths to be given to their
children with the rest of the property that I have ...

An old record of Stewarts Creek Baptist Church shows the church was started
in 1810 and that Philip Koonce gave one acre of land for the church to be built
on. The record also shows that the land was close to the ferry across the Elk River
May 31, 1823
Taken up by Anthony BLEDSOE, on the east fork of
Cane creek, a roan horse colt . . . appraised to
twenty-five dollars.

MEMOIR OF JNO.T.HICKS--To the funeral sermon of Rev.Dr.E.C. SLATER,at the
First Methodist Church,over the remains of our deceased friend,we are indebted
for some of the circumstantial facts in this article. John Thomas HICKS, son of
Robert HICKS,was born in North Hampton County,Virginia,December 28th,1834.He
resided in this county from seven years of age to the time of his death.He
married Miss Mary E.ROBERTSON,in Bolivar,Tennessee december 28th,1859.During
the war,he entered the Confederate service and belonged to Biffie’s Cavalry
for the term of two years.”
