William Cornelius Shows (son of Jacob Shows and Molly Polly Jackson) was born March 01, 1835 in Rutledge, Butler County, Alabama, and died July 03, 1923 in Luverne, Alabama.

Census or Enumeration of Confederate Soldiers Residing in Alabama, 1907 No.212, lists Cornelius Shows , Rutledge, AL was born on March 1, 1842 at Salsoda, Butler County, Alabama. First entered the service as private, Spring, 1862 at Greenville, Alabama in the 59th Alabama and continued until paroled at Point Lookout at the close of the war. Pay warrents for Cornelius Shows show that he was a private in the 4th Battalion (Art'y), Capt. Glasgow's company, Hilliard's Legion, Alabama Volunteers. Joined at Greenville, Ala. April 10, 1862 at age 24 years by J.R. Glasgow for three years. At the end of the war, he is shows as a private in the 59th Alabama Regiment. He swore the Oath of Allegiance at Point Lookout, MD on June 17, 1865. It reports that he was from Butler Co, AL, had a light complexion, Dark Brown Hair, Gray eyes and was 5 ft. 8 1/8 inches tall. He signed the oath by "mark".

Family history has his name was Cornelius "Neal" Shows. It is said that he was wounded in the hip at the battle of Lookout Mountain, TN and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war. He was paroled without even shoes on his feet and had to walk with others back to Alabama. He is said to have survived on anything he could find along the way....Even eating corn from horse dropping.
The record indicates that he was indeed at Point Lookout but that was in Maryland. Confererate prisoners who were paroled were usually sent south by train.

Shows family record has his birth date as March 1, 1830.
The army record would make his birthdate in 1838.
The various census records indicate that 1835 is correct.

CONFEDERATE ALABAMA TROOPS

Hilliard's Legion, Alabama Volunteers

Hilliard's Legion, organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in June, 1862, contained almost 3,000 men. It was composed of five battalions, but one mounted battalion soon became part of the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment. Its artillery arm was detached and redesignated the Barbour Light Artillery. The legion was assigned to General Gracie's Brigade, served at Cumberland Gap, then fought at Chickamauga where it lost forty-five percent of the 902 engaged. In November, 1863, it was dissolved. Parts of the 1st and 3rd Battalions formed the 60th Alabama Regiment, and the 2nd and 4th Battalions became the 59th Alabama Regiment. Three companies of the 1st Battalion formed the 23rd Alabama Battalion Sharpshooters. Its colonels were Henry W. Hillard and Jack Thorington. The 1st Battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonels John H. Holt and Jack Thorington, and Major Daniel S. Troy; the 2nd Battalion by Lieutenant Colonel Bolling Hall, Jr. and Major William T. Stubblefield; the 3rd Battalion by Lieutenant Colonel John W.A. Sanford and Major Hatch Cook; and the 4th Battalion by Majors John D. McLennen and William N. Reeves.
