William Riley Smith was born 1825, and died June 15, 1864 in Richmond,Virginia. He married Rebecca Deason, daughter of Wiley Deason and Nancy Caudle.

William served in Co. B, 44 AL and died of disease at Richmond during the Civil War. He enlisted at Scottsville, on Mar 15, 1862. Records list him at Fredericksburg, Dec. 15, 1862. Present at Dandridge, Jan. 16, 1864, and on thru Spotsylvania May 12, 1864. Absent sick Mechanicsville, and Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864. Died of disease at Richmond, VA, June 15, 1864.
