Adam was a miller and a tavern keeper.
"In 1743, the Moravians built their first grist mill at Bethlehem, at the foot of the declivity above which the original house of the settlement stood. Henry Antes undertook to superintend the construction, being assisted by John Adam Schaus, the miller. This was a great boon to the settlers surrounding it. It was replaced by another mill in 1751".

History: Local: CHAPTER LV: Frederick Township : Bean's 1884 History of Montgomery Co, PA
A religious movement of importance, in which a number of the inhabitants of Frederick Township were interested, took rise in 1742 in Pennsylvania.
Count Zinzendorf came to America in 1741 upon a religious mission. Henry Antes, of Frederick, soon made his acquaintance. They conferred with reference to uniting "such souls out of the different religious denominations who sought their salvation through Jesus Christ, through the bonds of love," -a subject in which they both felt a deep interest. On the 15th of December, 1741, a call was issued, over the signature of Henry Antes, for a meeting of Christians at Germantown on New Year's day. Another meeting was held at the house of George Heebner, in Frederick township, on the 14th and 15th of January, at which John George Stieffel, William Frey, Andrew Frey, Henry Antes, Adam Schaus, all of Frederick Township, were in attendance. On the 7th of December 1742, Count Zinzendorf preached at Falkner Swamp (doubtless at the house of Henry Antes), from Psalm cxxx, 3: "If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?" The unity movement meeting with opposition from many of the Lutheran, Reformed, Mennonites, Dunker, and Schwenkfelders now became a Moravian interest. The second week in March, 1745, the Moravian Synod met at the house of Henry Antes, in Frederick Township. it Moravian congregation was formed in Frederick township which, in 1747, numbered twenty-three persons. Of those who were permanently settled in Frederick Township, the following were connected with this Moravian congregation:
William Frey and family
Andrew Frey
Henry Antes and family.
Conrad Schaus, son of J. Adam and Barbara Schaus, born in January, 1738, in Henry Antes' mill

buried in the old graveyard at the "Dutch Fort", or what is now known as Bethabara in Winston-Salem, NC. During the Indian uprisings, these first settlers were protected by the Moravians within the fort walls of Bethabara. Should death occur during these times, these settlers were not buried in the Moravian Cemetery, but instead, at the "Stranger's graveyard" aka Dobb's Parish Graveyard, which was established Oct 5, 1759 and located south of the Bethabara Mill.
