The will of Philip Shouse, dated 7 May 1809, recorded in December 1810 Term of County Court of Stokes Co, NC:
"In the name of God Amen. I Phillip Shouse of Stokes Coun ty, State of North Carolina and being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God calling unto mind the
mortality of my body I do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following I recommend my soul unto the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent christian burial at the descretion of my executors and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dsipose of the same in the following manner and form, all my property to be sold and the money equally divided amongst my children also the money of the bonds and notes to be equally divided amongst my children Daniel, Fredrick, Henry, John, Susanna, Catharina, Salome. I likewise constitute make and ordain John Null and William Beck the sole executors of this my last will and testament I do hereby utterly disallow and revoke all former testaments wills, legacies and Executors ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of May in the Year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and nine.
