Mary Jane Walker came to Tennessee from Virginia in a covered wagon at the age of two with her parents
Stephen (b.1782) and Elizabeth Tiffin (b.1798) about 1834. Her father owned large tracts of land south of
Belview. She fell in love and married at age 18 to William Phillips (brother of Elijah).
She suffered greatly under Yankee occupation. During the course of the war, the whole area was stripped
of everything that could be stolen or confiscated. Once the Phillips were sitting at a meal, yankee soldiers
came in, pushed them away and took their place at the table and forced them to leave their home.
Not long after the Battle of Shiloh, Mr. Dollar (Duncan Dollar b. 1817) returned from Mississippi with news
that her husband William Phillips had been killed in battle.Mary Jane refused to believe William was dead
and she waited for him to return until the day she died. She run up bills at the local stores and would not
pay her taxes. After the War, her brother Stephen (Stephen Thomas b.1832) ended up with the farm.
