Includes NotesNotes for John Michael Hirn:
Johann Hirn as he was also known appears to be the person that emmigrated from Germany to establish the Hirn family in America. Although there are many other Hirn families in the United States, Johann's is the primary family followed here.

He is rumored to have "escaped" from his homeland to avoid either conscription in the army or because he was a talented musician that wanted to get away from his homeland for one reason or another. His settlement in Belgium, Wisconsin started with papers filed in 1846 and a record recently found in the National Archives dated February 1848.

He built a stone home ther and settled in as a store keeper and later on April 17, 1857 at the first postmaster in the town's history. He ran the post office from his store on the bottom floor and his home on the top floor. This structure was demolished for a gas station in 1994.

Johann's wife Barbara died on January 1, 1860 and he remarried 30 days later to Maria Galles for unknown reasons. There are no records for Barbara's death and only an entry for his second marriage. He lived out his life in the home he built, dieing of pneumonia at the age of 72.
