SEVENTH GENERATION

106. Andrew HAMPTON 3 was born in 1767 in Rutherford, N.C., USA. He died in 1861. He resided Ford Crossing on New River in Hampton Crossroads, now Baywood, Grayson, VA. "Andrew Hampton had come from farther south, where his family had apparently lived in the North Carolina Piedmont for several generations. Some family historians believe his branch of the Hampton family had come from England to the Norfolk area about 1620. Baywood Book, Compiled by Pat Davis, p.103.

.

Andrew Hampton, born about 1765, probably in Granville Co.,
N.C., married a young widow, Sarah Mina Griggs and moved to the Baywood area on New River around 1785, and is generally accepted as the first permanent Hampton family to settle in the Baywood area.

His father, Ezekiel Hampton, Sr., or his brother, Ezekiel Hampton, Jr., bought land in
Grayson Co. about the same time. In my opinion, it was Ezekiel, Jr., and who later moved back into North Carolina.. This brother had a son, Alford, who was shown on a North Carolina Census
as having been born in VA. in 1803. One Ezekiel Hampton is listed in Grayson County marriage records as surety for an Oct. 17, 1803, marriage between Micajah Summers and Nelly Dickson.

The father of Ezekiel Hampton, Sr., was Colonel Andrew Hampton, born about 1715, who became well known for his exploits in the Battle of Kings Mountain in the Revolutionary War. Records show him owning land as early as 1743 in the part of Orange County VA that today is Jefferson County, W.VA, near Charlestown, and from there into North Carolina, where he owned land in several different counties.

Old Colonel Andrew Hampton is credited with having 19 children by two wives. The second wife was Catherine Hyder of eastern Tennessee, probably near Johnston City.

“Our” old Andrew, grandson of Colonel Andrew, had a sister Bridget who married (9/26/1788) Guthrige Garland, a neighbor of his father, Ezekiel, Sr., and the Gutherages moved to Tennessee. Andrew's oldest son Griggs shows in the 1850 Census as having been born in Tenn. It is not known if Andrew lived in Tennessee before migrating to Baywood or if he was possibly visiting his sister Bridget in 1788 when Griggs was born.

The 1861 will of Andrew Hampton, Sr., of Grayson County had a very intertesting provision. Quote:
"Thirdly, I give to each of my 3 slaves, at my death, their freedom -- viz. George, Lewis and Jane, all of whom are to have the priviledge as soon thereafter as they see proper to remove to any State where they may be allowed to go, and so much as may be necessary to defray the expenses of such removal shall be paid out of any money belonging to my estate."

This was more than a year before President Lincoln's 22 Sept. 1862 preliminary Proclamation which granted freedom to slaves held in rebel states, which Proclamation was to become effective 1 Jan. 1863. (As told by Joe Garnett Kirby, Jr. "Baywood Book," compiled by Pat Davis, p. 127).
