Richard was one of 21 American soldiers captured during the Korean War. They shocked the nation by defecting to Communist China.
Richard returned home in 1955, lived in Minnesota for awhile and eventually settled in Utah.
Many articles can be found in old newspapers from years 1953-1955 about the defection.
There was also a white-up about him in Life Magazine Dec 28 1953 edition.
