Notes for R
OBERT J. HYDE:
Robert J. Hyde is regarded as one of Evansville's "early settlers".

Immigrated to the United States in 1850 when he was about 8 years old.

Robert J. Hyde was a Union soldier in the Civil War. He was actually a mercenary, he went into the service for someone who was drafted. He was paid to take this person's place. He was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was sent to the Confederate prison camp at Andersonville.

According to his grandson, Jack, he would say the country mourned the death of the wrong man, instead of Lincoln, they should have mourned John Wilkes Booth. During the war Lincoln refused to exchange P.O.W.s and Robert J. was subjected to some of the worst imprisonment during the Civil War at Andersonville for six months. With little running water and a lack of food the prisoners were forced to drink from the ditches that were intended for their waste and many were forced to eat rats that they caught in the compound.

He often told stories from his railroad days and how he had to run his train through Indian territory, often under attack from the Indians.

He was also a painting contractor for 50 years.

According to his granddaughter, Helen, everyone called him "Colonel". He never was a colonel in the army and she isn't quite sure how he came about this nickname.

He was very active in Democratic circles and at one time he had extensive real estate holdings on The north side of Evansville.

He served as a constable for a year.
