Notes for HENRY FRANCIS W. HILLENBRAND, SR.:
Henry Sr. was reasonably successful at everything he did, and he did a lot. He attended Valparaiso College for awhile, but he had something wrong with his eyes and was even temporarily blind. He had many occupations, among his business interests were - Owning a saw mill, a grocery store, a tavern, and a coal mine. He retired from the coal mining business at the age of 80 after he fell down a mine shaft. He was having trouble doing nothing and took a part-time job as an "elevator boy" at the Vendome Hotel. He worked here for a while until one day he wanted to take the afternoon off to go to a football game. Mr. Schultz, his boss, refused to left him off, so he took the elevator to the basement and quit his last job.

He enjoyed playing poker at the K of C and when he raised usually everyone would fold. He played his cards very close to his vest - he did steal a few pots bluffing.

He also enjoyed playing the "fiddle" and would play at dances on the weekends.
